OBS Dropped Frames During a YouTube Video Loop: Is Disk Speed the Cause?

OBS streaming dropped frames usually point to the connection to YouTube, not directly to the drive. Diagnose the counter first, then test local media and disk contention if the evidence fits.

Usually, no: OBS’s streaming dropped frames counter points first to the connection between your computer and YouTube’s ingest server, not to the speed of the drive holding a looped video. Check which OBS statistic is rising before changing storage or stream settings. Rendering lag, encoding lag, OBS streaming drops, and buffering while watching YouTube are different problems with different fixes.

First clarify what “YouTube video loop” means

The phrase can describe two different setups. You might be streaming an OBS scene to YouTube while a local video file loops in an OBS source, or you might be watching a YouTube video in a browser. It can also mean capturing a YouTube page in OBS. Those setups do not share one diagnosis.

  • Local file in OBS: OBS Media Source can play a video file and has a Loop setting; VLC Video can play a playlist with Loop Playlist enabled. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  • YouTube page captured in OBS: the browser or capture source is part of the scene, while the OBS stream still travels over your network to YouTube.
  • Watching YouTube: playback buffering is a viewer-side issue, not an OBS streaming dropped-frame counter.

If you are not sure which applies, note whether OBS is producing a live stream, whether the video file is stored on your computer, and whether the problem is visible in OBS Stats or only in YouTube playback.

Identify the OBS statistic that is increasing

Open OBS’s Stats window and reproduce the issue. Record the exact counter that changes rather than describing every kind of stutter as “dropped frames.” The OBS Project defines streaming dropped frames as a connection to the remote server that is unstable or unable to sustain the configured bitrate. That makes the network path the first place to investigate when the streaming dropped-frame count rises. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide covers connection checks.

OBS streaming dropped frames increase Connection between the computer and YouTube’s ingest server, or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps; check stable upload capacity and the configured bitrate.
Rendering lag or encoding lag increases, or the output is choppy System workload, scene composition, rendering, or encoding performance Use OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance and assess workload and output settings.
A local media source stutters while disk activity is high A possible source or storage interaction, which needs a controlled test Compare playback with disk-heavy background tasks stopped, then, if practical, from a different drive.
YouTube playback buffers in a browser or app Viewer playback, device, app/browser, quality, or connection conditions Use YouTube’s computer playback troubleshooting, separately from OBS diagnostics.

Rendering and encoding lag are not the same as OBS’s streaming dropped frames. OBS’s performance guide discusses GPU load, scene complexity, output resolution and frame rate, and encoding as possible constraints. Reduce workload or adjust output settings only when the observed symptom points to that performance path; changing those settings is not a general fix for a network counter.

Test whether a local loop is actually affected by disk activity

A local Media Source or VLC playlist can be part of an OBS scene, but the presence of a loop does not establish that disk read speed is causing stream drops. An OBS Studio issue report describes a specific test in which competing disk use coincided with increased Media Source CPU use. That is a reason to investigate disk contention when the symptoms fit, not proof that a slow drive is the cause on another computer or that an SSD will fix it.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD

  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
  1. Confirm the source: in the scene, determine whether the looping content is a local Media Source, a VLC playlist, or a browser/window/display capture.
  2. Observe the right counters: note whether the problem coincides with rising streaming dropped frames, rendering lag, encoding lag, or visible stutter in the media source.
  3. Reduce competing disk work: repeat the same scene and file while pausing disk-heavy background tasks. Keep the output, scene, and other conditions as similar as possible.
  4. Compare the source path if possible: try the same file from another drive or location and compare the symptoms. A difference is evidence to investigate the storage path further, not by itself a universal diagnosis.
  5. Only consider a storage change after the comparison: confirm the computer supports the drive interface and that the drive has enough capacity before buying anything. The OBS issue report does not specify a drive recommendation for your system.

The issue report is available at OBS Studio issue #2925; it was updated on 2020-09-09. Its reported case should not be generalized into a claim that video loops normally cause dropped frames.

Keep viewer buffering separate from OBS stream health

If you are watching a YouTube video and it buffers, OBS’s stream counter cannot explain that playback problem. YouTube’s computer troubleshooting page addresses playback quality and connection, app/browser, and device checks for viewers. Use those checks for playback that buffers in the browser or app; do not treat them as a fix for an OBS counter while producing a live stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded video playing live on YouTube around the clock, you can do it with OBS on your own computer, but that computer and its connection must remain available. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer can be off while the cloud stream continues. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
