To keep an OBS loop running with a Windows laptop lid closed, set Windows’ plugged-in lid action so the laptop does not sleep, configure and test the video source’s loop in OBS, then verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving it unattended. Menu options can vary by laptop, so first test the exact setup with the lid closed.
1. Set Windows to stay awake when the lid closes
- Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- For the When I close the lid setting, change the Plugged in action so Windows does not sleep. The available choices may depend on your laptop hardware and manufacturer; if the option is unavailable or the laptop still sleeps, check the manufacturer’s power utility or documentation. Microsoft explains Windows sleep and power behavior.
- Save the change. Remember that turning off the display is not the same as putting the computer to sleep.
Microsoft notes that most laptops can sleep automatically when their lid closes. Changing the plugged-in action is the first dependency, but it does not establish that every laptop is safe to operate closed for every duration. The make and model matter; there is no universal thermal guarantee for a closed laptop.

2. Configure and test the OBS loop
- In OBS, add the recording as a video source and enable its loop behavior using the control available in your installed OBS version. OBS’s official media-source documentation is here; interface labels can change, so use the current source properties rather than relying on an assumed click path.
- Start playback and watch through the end of the recording. Confirm it returns to the beginning and continues playing. Check that the audio also restarts as intended.
- If you use display capture and the capture is blank, check GPU assignment. OBS recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU. Its laptop guidance says OBS 27 and later supports a capture method for cases where OBS and the monitor use different GPUs; that guidance describes Windows 10 version 1903 or later as a requirement for that method. 3. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select or create the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream key and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send an encoder feed to that stream. YouTube supports custom stream keys and encoder-triggered auto-start and auto-stop settings; available labels may change. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Where supported, choose YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion option for an encrypted connection. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings for the server and connection details.
4. Choose settings that fit the connection
Use the resolution and frame rate your video actually needs, and set the encoder bitrate according to YouTube’s recommendations and the upload capacity measured at the laptop’s streaming location. YouTube’s current encoder table recommends 5–14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30; the appropriate point in that range depends on the stream configuration and available upload bandwidth. Run an upload speed test from the actual Indian connection you will use, leave capacity for other network traffic, and test before relying on the stream. Do not assume a particular upload speed or connection reliability based on location alone. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for current recommendations.

5. Run a preflight with the lid closed
- Start OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended video and audio.
- Check the published watch page from another device, including a phone, and listen for audio problems. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health; consult its live streaming tips.
- While the laptop is plugged in, close the lid for a short test. From another device, verify that the live page continues receiving the loop and that playback restarts correctly.
- Only leave the setup unattended after that test succeeds. YouTube recommends testing failover in advance, but whether a backup is available depends on your own equipment and connection.
Troubleshooting
