Fix an FFmpeg concat error by identifying which stage is failing: playlist parsing, joining the media streams, or YouTube’s live ingest. The concat demuxer expects a correctly formatted playlist and compatible input streams; YouTube’s encoder settings matter only after FFmpeg has produced a coherent output.
First identify where the failure occurs
There are three separate stages: FFmpeg must read the playlist, concatenate the selected inputs, and produce output that YouTube accepts as a live stream. A failure in one stage does not establish a problem in the others. The steps below narrow down the cause; without the exact command, error, playlist and media files, there is no single fix that applies to every case.

Fix playlist parsing and path errors
Check the concat script format
The concat demuxer reads a text script with one directive per line. A minimal playlist looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'part-01.mp4'
file 'part-02.mp4'For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be exactly the first line: do not add leading space or a byte-order mark. If you explicitly select the input format with -f concat, the header is not needed for format detection, but the file directives still need to be valid. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Quote paths and understand the safe-path check
Paths containing spaces or special characters need the quoting or escaping required by the concat script syntax. The demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1, which rejects paths it considers unsafe. If that rejection is the observed problem, -safe 0 permits any file name; use it only with a playlist and paths you trust.
For example, specify the demuxer and safe-path option before the input they apply to:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat ...-safe 0 is unnecessary when every path satisfies the safe-path rules. FFmpeg options are position-sensitive, so keep input options before the relevant -i. Because the online documentation is rolling, check ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat on the installed build if its behavior may differ.

Check whether the input files can be concatenated
Compare streams and time bases
The concat demuxer virtually reads files in sequence and adjusts their timestamps across the resulting timeline. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time base. Compare each input’s video and audio stream count, codec, time base, dimensions, frame rate and duration with ffprobe. These are useful diagnostic fields, not a guarantee that matching only those fields will make every set of files work.

Try a short playlist first and inspect FFmpeg’s reported stream mapping and timestamps. If the inputs do not meet the demuxer’s compatibility requirements, do not assume that a playlist can normalize them while stream-copying.
Investigate gaps, freezes and timestamp discontinuities
Each file’s duration determines the next file’s start timestamp. If stream lengths differ, gaps can result; bad duration information, including a duration inferred incorrectly or a truncated file, can cause artifacts. The playlist’s duration directive can override a file’s stored duration, but use it only when you have a defensible duration value. Inspect the timeline and test a short output before relying on the correction.

Use the concat filter when inputs need re-encoding
If the files need to be normalized or the demuxer cannot stream-copy them reliably, the concat filter is the alternative to test when re-encoding is acceptable. FFmpeg’s FAQ on concatenating media files distinguishes the filter, intended for cases where re-encoding is needed, from the demuxer, useful when avoiding re-encoding matters.

The demuxer’s auto_convert option is enabled by default, but its documented conversion is limited: in relevant cases, FFmpeg adds the H.264 MP4-to-Annex-B bitstream filter, notably when resolutions change. It does not make unlike codecs or arbitrary stream layouts compatible.

Check YouTube ingest only after the output is sound
A playlist fix does not resolve an encoder or ingest problem. Once FFmpeg produces coherent output, check the settings against YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance. YouTube lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; use the current official table for recommended bitrates at resolutions and frame rates not listed here.
For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. These are recommendations in YouTube’s live-streaming settings table, not guarantees of stream quality or performance. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health. None of these ingest settings corrects a malformed concat script.
Work through the errors in this order
- Capture the evidence. Save the exact command, complete FFmpeg error,
ffmpeg -versionoutput and playlist text. Redact your YouTube stream key before sharing logs. - Validate the playlist. Check the exact first-line header if you rely on automatic detection; otherwise, explicitly select the concat input format with
-f concat. - Verify every path. Confirm each referenced file exists and is readable, and quote or escape paths as required. Use
-safe 0only if a trusted path is being rejected by the safe-path check. - Compare the media. Probe each file and compare its streams. Use stream-copy concatenation only when the inputs meet the demuxer’s matching-stream requirements.
- Inspect the timeline. If you see gaps, freezes or discontinuities, check durations and timestamps. Test a
durationdirective only with a reliable value. - Change methods if needed. If the inputs need normalization, test the concat filter and re-encode rather than expecting the demuxer to normalize them.
- Test the live ingest. After confirming the generated output is sound, check YouTube’s codec, keyframe interval, bitrate mode, audio and network stability. Run a test stream and monitor YouTube’s health messages.
Choose the concatenation method for the job
