Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

For prerecorded content, OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist, so you can advance to another item or switch to a prepared source while the same encoder feed continues to YouTube. A playlist does not guarantee a seamless transition: test your actual files, scenes, and 4K/60 setup before broadcasting.
Where the playlist belongs
For this workflow, the playlist is in OBS—not a playlist editor in YouTube Studio. OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple video and audio files as a playlist. OBS documents that the source is available when VLC is installed. YouTube receives the encoder’s output as one live feed; changing the media in OBS does not require ending that live event.

The OBS Media Sources documentation was dated January 11, 2022. Labels and controls can vary with OBS and VLC versions, so verify the source and playback controls in the versions installed on your computer.
Set up the stream and playlist
- Create or select the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or open the encoder-based live event. Copy its server URL and stream key into your streaming software’s YouTube connection settings. Keep the key private.
- Prepare the OBS source. Install VLC if needed, then add a VLC Video source to the scene used for your prerecorded video. Choose the media files in the order you want them to play. Set loop or shuffle according to the intended show; use a fixed order when the sequence matters.
- Check source visibility behavior. Decide what should happen if the source is hidden or you switch scenes. OBS documents visibility behavior for media sources, but playback behavior can depend on source settings and the version in use. Test it rather than assuming a hidden source will continue playing.
- Connect and preview. Start sending the OBS output to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, then check video and audio before going live.
- Change the video during the broadcast. While the event and encoder output remain active, advance the VLC playlist or switch to another prepared scene or source. The exact controls depend on the installed OBS/VLC version; there is no single button sequence established for every version.
- End only when the broadcast is finished. Use YouTube’s End Stream control when you actually intend to finish the event, then stop sending encoder content. Do not use it just to change clips.
Set and verify 4K at 60 fps
Choose 2160p (4K) at 60 fps in the encoder output settings, and use a bitrate suited to the selected codec and a stable upload connection. YouTube’s encoder-settings table lists separate guidance: for 2160p/60, AV1 or H.265 has a 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps maximum, while the recommended H.264 bitrate is 35 Mbps. These are codec-specific figures, not one universal setting; consult YouTube’s current encoder settings for the codec you use.

YouTube transcodes incoming streams into different output formats for viewers, so the quality they can select is not determined by your OBS output alone. YouTube also says low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams: 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency.
Test a video change before the event
A playlist documents what can play, not a guaranteed transition quality. A source change may produce a brief visual interruption, a black frame, or an audio discontinuity depending on the files, scene setup, machine, and encoder. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing before going live, previewing the event, and monitoring stream health.

- Check picture, audio, stream health, and whether the encoder remains connected throughout each change.
- Adjust the source or scene setup if transitions are disruptive, then repeat the test.
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are preparation recommendations, not technical requirements.

- VLC Video is not available as a source: Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and check the OBS Sources Guide for the version you use.
- The wrong clip plays or the order changes: Review the files and their order in the VLC Video playlist. Turn off shuffle if you need a fixed sequence.
- Playback stops when you switch scenes: Check the source’s visibility and playback behavior, then test the scene transition. Keep the source active or use a prepared scene arrangement that behaves as intended.
- The event ends when you change content: Keep the encoder output connected and do not select YouTube’s End Stream control. Change the media in OBS instead.
- The 4K/60 feed is unstable or unhealthy: Check the selected codec’s bitrate guidance, available upload capacity, and YouTube stream-health indicators. Test again at the intended settings before the public broadcast.
- The transition is not seamless: Treat this as a production issue, not proof that the event must end. Try a different source or scene transition and verify the result with the exact media and setup.
Copyright and live-stream eligibility
Changing clips inside OBS does not change the rights or YouTube rules that apply to the content. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and check YouTube’s live-stream requirements and copyright guidance before broadcasting. Avoid assuming that a prerecorded playlist is exempt from copyright claims or other channel policies.
