OBS Color Range Settings for Prerecorded YouTube Live Video

Use Partial output range and BT.709 as a compatibility-oriented starting point for an ordinary SDR OBS recording uploaded to YouTube. Learn how source interpretation, metadata, and playback affect color.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical SDR video recorded in OBS and later uploaded to YouTube, start with Partial output range and BT.709 color space. OBS documents Partial as its default video range, and YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR uploads and says it converts full-range uploads to limited range. The encoded file’s color metadata should match how the video was mastered. YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations and the OBS Media I/O reference are the relevant guides.

What OBS color range and color space do

Color range and color space are separate settings. Partial (also called limited or legal range) uses a narrower nominal video code-value span than Full. The range describes how levels are represented; the color space identifies the color system, such as Rec. 709 or Rec. 601. OBS lists these as separate properties, along with Rec. 2100 PQ and HLG for HDR workflows. OBS’s reference defines Default video range as equivalent to Partial.

If a source is interpreted using a different range from the one it actually carries, or the output conversion is mismatched, the image can look washed out or lose detail in shadows and highlights. The words “Full” and “Partial” alone do not tell you whether a mismatch exists: consider the source signal, OBS’s interpretation of it, the output file, YouTube’s processing, and the playback display.

Recommended settings for an SDR YouTube upload

Output range: Partial

Use Partial as the compatibility-oriented output baseline for ordinary SDR material. OBS’s documented default is Partial, and YouTube says it converts full-range uploads to limited range. A Full-range output is not automatically wrong, but it should be intentional and consistent with the way the material was prepared and tagged. YouTube’s upload guidance

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

Color space: BT.709

For SDR uploads, use BT.709 (also called Rec. 709). YouTube recommends BT.709 as its standard SDR upload color space. Do not choose Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG for standard SDR footage; those are HDR color-space options in OBS. YouTube upload recommendations · OBS color-space definitions

Check the signal at each stage

  1. Identify the source and intended export. For a regular SDR YouTube video, use BT.709 and Partial output range as the starting point. YouTube also recommends progressive video, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and matching the uploaded frame rate to the recorded content. Its published SDR bitrate values are recommendations rather than mandatory settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
  2. Interpret the incoming signal correctly. A capture-device source may have its own range property. Match that interpretation to the actual signal from the device rather than forcing every source to Full or Partial based only on its name or how the preview looks. Device defaults depend on the model and driver; some signals, including full-range XRGB and certain MJPEG cases, can be exceptions. The OBS community’s range guide offers applied advice, but check it against your current device and OBS version.
  3. Check the exported file’s color metadata. The file’s transfer characteristics, color primaries, and matrix coefficients should describe the way the video was mastered. YouTube identifies mismatches in these values as a possible cause of color problems. For non-HDR uploads, its guidance is to use BT.709. See YouTube’s color troubleshooting information.
  4. Compare the export with YouTube playback. If the local file looks right but the uploaded playback does not, compare the video in another browser or device, as YouTube recommends. This can help separate an encoding or metadata issue from a playback-display difference. YouTube color troubleshooting

Why capture range and output range are not the same choice

The incoming signal, OBS source interpretation, and final encoded file are different stages. A capture card might send a particular range while the exported file is correctly set to Partial; the source property must first decode the input properly, then the output can be encoded for the destination. The right input setting is device- and format-dependent, so verify the device’s signal instead of assuming that RGB means Full. The OBS community range guide explains common mismatches and notes exceptions, but it is practical guidance rather than a replacement for YouTube’s current specifications.

Troubleshoot washed-out or clipped YouTube playback

  • The uploaded video looks washed out: Confirm the export’s range and color metadata, then check that OBS interpreted the capture source correctly. A Full/Partial mismatch is one possible explanation; the local file and YouTube playback comparison helps locate the stage where the change appears.
  • Dark or bright details appear missing: Check for a range mismatch between the device’s signal and OBS’s source interpretation or output conversion. Do not change every range setting at once; verify the incoming signal and test a corrected export.
  • The local export looks correct but YouTube does not: Check the file’s transfer characteristics, primaries, and matrix coefficients against the mastering settings. Also compare playback in another browser or device to rule out a display-specific issue. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance
  • The footage is SDR but OBS is set to an HDR color space: Use BT.709 for the SDR upload rather than Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Those options are for HDR workflows. OBS color-space reference

A downloadable test chart can help reveal crushed or elevated levels in a controlled workflow; the OBS community has an older test-chart guide. It does not establish that a physical chart is necessary, and its older YouTube compatibility suggestions should not override current upload specifications.

Prerecorded uploads are different from live encoder settings

This guidance is for a prerecorded file uploaded to YouTube and later used as live-style content, not for settings at a live encoder ingest. YouTube’s live encoder recommendations also use Rec. 709 for SDR, but the live guide covers a separate workflow. For an uploaded file, use the dedicated upload encoding recommendations as the destination reference and the live encoder guidance only when configuring an actual live feed.
