How to Fix YouTube Audio Clipping in a 24/7 Prerecorded Music Stream

If your prerecorded music stream sounds distorted, first find where the distortion starts: in the source file, in OBS or another encoder, or in YouTube playback. Lower peaks that reach digital full scale before encoding, or use an appropriate limiter and check the output again. Changing bitrate or sample rate cannot restore audio that is already clipped.

Why is my YouTube livestream audio clipping?

Digital clipping occurs when the audio signal reaches or exceeds the system’s maximum level. OBS explains that audio sent to a recording or stream needs to remain below 0 dBFS; otherwise, viewers may hear clipping and distortion. A file can also be distorted before it ever reaches OBS, for example in a loud passage or at a track transition.

Separate this peak-level problem from YouTube ingest warnings. A stream-health message about codec, bitrate, sample rate, or channel count points to a configuration issue; it does not by itself establish that the source is clipping.

Find the stage where distortion begins

  1. Listen to the original files. Check the loudest passages, track beginnings and endings, and playlist transitions. If the original already distorts, replace or repair that audio if possible. An encoder setting cannot reconstruct waveform peaks that were clipped in the source.
  2. Watch the software meter during the loudest material. In OBS, play representative music and watch the Audio Mixer peak meter. If the signal reaches the digital ceiling, reduce the source or mixer gain before encoding, or apply an appropriate limiter. Then check the processed output again. OBS documents -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level meter marker and explains its margin rationale; that marker is not a universal target for every music stream.
  3. Compare three checkpoints. Listen to the source file, a local recording or output from the encoder, and the viewer-facing YouTube playback. If distortion is present at the first checkpoint, investigate the source; if it appears in the local output, investigate the software signal path; if the earlier checkpoints sound clean but YouTube playback does not, check the ingest configuration and playback path. This comparison helps isolate the stage; it is not a guarantee that any one setting will solve every symptom.
  4. Review YouTube stream health. Read the actual health indicator and message, then correct the stated issue. YouTube’s API documentation includes audio warnings and errors involving bitrate, codec, sample rate, channel count, missing or multiple audio streams, and primary/backup stream mismatches. These should not all be labeled clipping.
  5. Test with representative material. YouTube recommends a pre-stream test with audio and video movement similar to the actual event. For a continuous music stream, include loud tracks and transitions, then listen to the actual stream playback.
  6. Recheck after changes. After changing files, processing, or playlist order, revisit the meter and stream-health messages. A short test cannot cover tracks or transitions that were not included.

Use YouTube’s stereo audio ingest recommendations

YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, reviewed October 3, 2026, recommends the following settings for stereo audio. These are compatibility and ingest recommendations, not remedies for a clipped source or an over-hot signal.

Setting YouTube stereo recommendation What it addresses
Audio codec AAC or MP3 Supported live audio encoding format
Rate control CBR Encoder bitrate mode
Sample rate 44.1 kHz Audio sampling configuration
Bitrate 128 kbps Stereo audio bitrate

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings and testing guidance for the current platform details. If the configuration already matches and the signal peaks too high, correct gain or limiting rather than changing bitrate or sample rate in the hope of undoing clipping.

Why a 24/7 stream needs repeated checks

Continuous playlists can expose problems that a brief test misses: one unusually loud recording, a distorted source, or a transition that causes a peak. After a playlist or processing change, check both the OBS meter while representative material plays and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Keep the source, local output, and actual stream as separate listening checkpoints so that a configuration warning is not confused with audible clipping.
