Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a typical 16:9 loop, start with a 1920×1080 OBS output at 30 fps if the source has enough detail and your computer and internet connection can sustain it. Use a lower output when the source is lower-resolution or performance is unreliable; choose 60 fps only when visible motion benefits from it and your encoder can keep up. The right setting is the highest useful quality you can maintain reliably—not simply the largest number in OBS.
Canvas resolution vs. output resolution
OBS has two resolution settings that do different jobs. Base (Canvas) Resolution is the workspace where you arrange and size sources. Output (Scaled) Resolution is the size of the video OBS sends to YouTube after scaling.

- Base (Canvas) Resolution: Set it to suit the composition you are building, usually the source’s aspect ratio. Changing it can require you to resize or reposition sources.
- Output (Scaled) Resolution: Choose the intended stream resolution. For example, a 1920×1080 canvas sent at 1280×720 is downscaled. Sending a lower-resolution source at 1920×1080 does not restore detail that is not in the original.
For an ordinary landscape loop, 16:9 is a sensible starting aspect ratio; YouTube identifies it as the standard computer-player aspect ratio. Preserve the source’s proportions: fit it within the canvas or crop deliberately rather than stretching it. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Use 1080p30 when the source and setup support it
If your source is 1080p or better and both your computer and connection are dependable, 1920×1080 output at 30 fps is a practical baseline for a 24/7 loop. It is a starting recommendation, not a YouTube requirement. Test the stream for sustained performance before relying on it unattended.

Choose 720p when it is the more reliable match
Use 1280×720 output when the source has limited detail, your encoder is overloaded, or your connection cannot reliably sustain a higher-quality stream. A stable 720p broadcast is more useful than an intermittent or degraded 1080p one. Do not upscale a low-resolution source just to select a larger output size.
Use 60 fps only when motion warrants it
A static image or slowly changing background usually has little reason to run at 60 fps. Choose 60 fps when movement in the loop visibly benefits from smoother motion and the computer can encode it continuously. OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can be substantially more demanding than 30 fps, so test the system rather than assuming it will cope.

There is no evidence here to recommend 1440p as a default. Consider a higher output only if the source detail, encoder capacity, upload connection and intended presentation justify it.
Set up OBS and YouTube ingest
- Inspect the loop file. Check its native resolution, aspect ratio and motion. Decide whether it should fit inside the frame or be cropped, and avoid stretching it.
- Choose the composition size. In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution to the workspace that fits your composition, typically 1920×1080 for a standard 16:9 landscape layout.
- Set the delivered size and frame rate. In the same Video settings, choose Output (Scaled) Resolution for the resolution you intend to send—such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720—and set the frame rate to 30 fps as a starting point. If you choose a different canvas and output size, check the source alignment after the change.
- Configure the stream encoder. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than 4 seconds. It supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, recommends RTMPS, and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Use an encoder and codec available in your OBS setup and compatible with the ingest configuration shown in YouTube Studio.
- Set bitrate with headroom. For H.264, YouTube’s published live-ingest guidance gives these figures. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be reliable.
| Output and frame rate | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s published recommendations differ: 720p30 and 720p60 are 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended; 1080p30 is 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended; 1080p60 is 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for the applicable codec guidance. Leave upload headroom instead of setting the stream bitrate equal to the best speed from a brief connection test.

- Check color and scan settings. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709, square pixels and progressive scan.
- Add the YouTube stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use the stream key shown for it in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Test before the long broadcast. Preview the feed, check picture and audio, and watch YouTube’s stream health while OBS runs. Use representative parts of the loop, not just a still frame. YouTube’s livestream tips also state that the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days.
Plan for reliability and the 24/7 archive limit
A test that looks good for a few minutes does not prove the setup will stay healthy through a continuous broadcast. Check OBS for encoding overload and YouTube for stream-health warnings during a representative sustained test. If either shows problems, reduce the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate as appropriate, then test again.
Do not assume YouTube will create a complete on-demand replay of a single 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says automatic archiving is available for live streams shorter than 12 hours and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep a local recording and plan how to preserve or publish the archive. YouTube recommends checking that local archive files are intact and growing; its guidance does not require a particular restart schedule. See Archive live streams.

Troubleshoot common resolution and stream problems
- The loop looks stretched or has bars: Check the source and canvas aspect ratios. Fit the source without distortion, or crop intentionally; do not force it to fill a mismatched frame.
- The image is soft despite a high output setting: Check the source file’s actual resolution and detail. A larger output cannot create detail missing from the source.
- OBS reports encoding lag or overload: Reduce output resolution and/or frame rate, then test again. A 30-fps output may be a better fit than 60 fps for a slow loop.
- YouTube reports poor stream health or dropped frames: Check sustained upload capacity and bitrate, and leave network headroom. Choose a lower-quality setting that the connection can maintain reliably.
- The live feed has no sound or the wrong picture: Preview the actual YouTube ingest, verify the selected OBS sources and audio, and check the loop during playback before leaving the broadcast unattended.
- The broadcast ends but there is no complete replay: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Use a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
