If your OBS 4K/2160p at 60 fps YouTube stream is dropping frames, first check which OBS counter is rising. Network-dropped frames call for network or bitrate changes; rendering lag and encoding lag point to local GPU or system workload. YouTube’s recommended 4K60 bitrate is 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265, but those are targets—not proof your internet connection can sustain them.
Identify what OBS means by “dropped frames”
Open OBS’s Stats panel and check the dropped-frames, rendering-lag and encoding-lag counters while the problem occurs. OBS uses dropped frames for an unstable connection to the remote streaming server or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Rendering and encoding lag are separate problems: they indicate OBS or the captured application is struggling to render or encode on the computer.

- Dropped frames (network): investigate bitrate, upload stability, the route to YouTube’s ingest server and network interference.
- Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering frames in time, often because the GPU is overloaded.
- Encoding lag: the selected encoder or system cannot encode frames quickly enough.
Viewer buffering is not the same symptom. If viewers report stalls but OBS shows no network drops or local lag, their playback conditions may be the issue; YouTube transcodes live streams, but lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate can make playback more accessible. Don’t infer an OBS dropped-frame problem from viewer complaints alone.
If the network-dropped-frames counter is rising
Lower the bitrate to what your connection can sustain
OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee: use sustained real-world upload measurements, leave room for variation and audio, and lower the video bitrate if the connection is unstable. A speed test is only a snapshot; the stream needs to hold its rate continuously.

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, retrieved in 2026, recommends these 4K/2160p 60 fps video bitrates:

These are YouTube ingest guidelines, not a universal minimum for every stable stream and not a promise that your uplink can carry the recommended rate. If your connection cannot sustain the target, reduce bitrate first; if that is not enough, lower resolution or frame rate until the stream holds steady.

Test the route and the local network
- In OBS, try a different YouTube ingest server if the option is available.
- If you are streaming over Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection when practical. A cable can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix ISP congestion or a poor route to YouTube.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, security software, network-prioritization utility or bundled optimization tool is interfering. OBS cites examples such as Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software; they are examples, not an exhaustive list.
- Check for old network drivers and modem or router connectivity problems. Avoid changing hardware without evidence that it is the cause.
Use OBS network options as controlled tests
On Windows, OBS recommends testing Network Optimizations and TCP pacing. Leave Bind to IP at Default initially. If needed, try IPv4 Only; restore IPv4/IPv6 if that change does not help.
Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment can reduce bitrate during congestion to manage dropped frames, but picture quality falls when it does so. It is a fallback mitigation, not a repair for an unstable connection. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which test helped.

If rendering or encoding lag is rising
Reduce the work OBS must do
- In OBS, open Settings > Video and reduce the output resolution or frame rate for a test. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
- Simplify busy scenes and remove sources or effects you do not need for the stream.
- Reduce the workload of the game or application being captured so OBS has GPU capacity available.
- Test again while watching the relevant OBS counters. If the counters recover, raise quality gradually rather than changing several settings at once.
Reducing Base (Canvas) Resolution is more disruptive because sources may need repositioning. OBS does not generally recommend it unless GPU resources are severely constrained. NVENC settings and available options depend on OBS version and GPU generation, so there is no universally correct preset for an unspecified machine. Advanced split-encode behavior documented by OBS 31.0 applies only to supported NVIDIA hardware and specific settings; it is not a generic fix for dropped frames.

For YouTube live ingest, the current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Use only a codec supported by your installed OBS version, encoder hardware and YouTube workflow.

- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Transport: RTMPS recommended by YouTube.
- Color: Rec. 709 for SDR. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC and does not support AV1 HDR in the cited guidance.
For a 4K stream, YouTube’s cited guidance sets normal latency; the “improve for low latency” option is not available for 4K/2160p. This is not an OBS setting to override.

- Keep the intended resolution, frame rate, codec and audio settings.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static screen.
- Monitor OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test.
- Change one likely cause at a time, then repeat the test to confirm the result.
- If the problem persists, keep the OBS log and note the Stats counters, hardware, OBS version, output settings and sustained upload measurements. Those details are needed to identify a machine-specific cause.
