Use layers: add a clear, accurate disclosure for viewers; preserve any invisible watermark added by the video generator; and keep signed C2PA Content Credentials in the exported file when your tools support them. Each does a different job: a label tells people, credentials can document origin and edits, and an invisible signal may help software identify content or find detached provenance. None proves every claim about a video by itself.
What “watermarking” an AI video can mean
The term covers several different ways to signal that AI was involved. A visible label is meant for people. An invisible watermark is an embedded signal that compatible software may detect. C2PA Content Credentials are signed provenance information: a manifest can record details such as how media was created or edited and which source materials were used. C2PA credentials are not themselves an invisible watermark, although an invisible watermark or fingerprint can act as a “soft binding” to help locate a manifest that has become detached from a file. Check what the generator adds
Before editing, check the generator’s export documentation and inspect its available settings. Find out whether it adds an invisible watermark, Content Credentials, a visible mark, or more than one of these. Preserve native signals when practical. Do not assume that you can add another company’s proprietary watermark to an arbitrary finished video unless that company documents a supported method.

Write a disclosure that describes the actual workflow
Choose language that tells viewers how AI contributed. For example, “AI-generated video” may fit a fully generated piece; “AI-generated scenes with human editing” may fit a mixed workflow. If AI contributed only a small element, name that role instead of implying that the entire video was generated. Place the notice where it can be read, such as in an opening title card or a caption. A visible notice is the part of the workflow designed to communicate directly with an audience; it does not substitute for retaining machine-readable provenance.

Keep the source material and edit history
Retain the generated source, relevant prompts or other inputs where appropriate, original assets, and records of significant edits and exports. C2PA models source media as ingredients and can record creation and editing actions in a manifest. Its guidance recommends creating manifests at significant lifecycle events, including initial creation and export. C2PA implementation guidance

Preserve Content Credentials through export when supported
If your generator or editing workflow supports C2PA credentials, use a tool that creates or carries a manifest through export. Do not assume that credentials survive every transformation. At a significant event such as final export, create or attach a new manifest if the workflow calls for it, rather than assuming the original one remains intact.

For newly created generative media, C2PA implementation guidance describes including an action that identifies whether the media was created anew or opened for editing, and an appropriate
digitalSourceTypewhen content is created. The guidance gives generative video as an example and identifies a trained-algorithmic-media source type. Keep the generator’s native invisible watermark
Invisible watermarking is generator-specific. Google DeepMind says SynthID is integrated into Veo-generated video and describes its video watermarking as building on its image and audio methods across the video’s frames. Verify with a tool that supports the signal
Google describes submitting a video to Gemini and asking whether it was generated using Google AI. Gemini scans its audio and visual tracks for SynthID and can report segments containing the signal. This checks for the supported Google signal; it is not a universal AI-video detector and does not establish whether video made with other systems contains a watermark. Keep a master and check the version viewers receive
Keep your project master and final export. If provenance matters, check the exported file with a compatible Content Credentials viewer or the generator’s supported verifier, then check the downloaded or otherwise distributed rendition when possible. A successful check supports the presence of the signal that verifier recognizes; it does not independently prove every statement about authorship, intent, or the full editing history.

What a watermark or credential can—and cannot—show
- A visible label tells viewers what you disclose, but a derivative can omit it.
- A valid C2PA manifest can provide signed provenance context, but a file carrying credentials should not be called “authentic” on that basis alone. Interpret the claims and source recorded in the manifest.
- A detected invisible signal means a compatible verifier found a signal it supports; it is not proof that every claim about the video is true.
- No detected signal does not establish that a video was made without AI. The verifier may not support the generator’s signal, or processing may have removed it.
- A soft-binding match can help locate a detached manifest, but C2PA says such matches may be inexact and should be verified.
NIST’s 2024 overview treats provenance, synthetic-content labeling and watermarking, detection, testing, and auditing as distinct technical approaches. It is a broad overview, not evidence that one watermark method works in every workflow. NIST’s 2024 overview
Common problems and what to do
- The label overstates AI’s role: revise it to say whether the video is fully generated, AI-assisted, or includes a specific AI-generated element.
- The exported file has no visible credentials: check whether the generator or export tool supports C2PA and whether the workflow creates a new manifest at export. Do not assume that every editor or platform preserves metadata.
- A verifier finds no watermark: confirm that the verifier supports the generator’s signal. A negative result cannot establish that the video is human-made.
- A watermark check finds a signal: report which supported signal was detected and by which verifier; do not treat detection as proof of all provenance claims.
- A manifest cannot be found after editing or upload: return to the retained master and check whether the workflow supports reattaching or creating credentials at export. If using a soft-binding lookup, verify the match rather than treating it as exact.
- You are looking for generic SynthID video settings: do not apply configuration instructions for SynthID text watermarking to video. The cited Google developer documentation is specifically about text. Google developer documentation on SynthID safeguards
