YouTube automatically creates viewer playback formats from your live stream; you do not choose those downstream transcoding renditions in Studio. To check what YouTube receives for a 4K 60fps broadcast, inspect the encoder settings and stream health in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Resolution and frame-rate detection are automatic by default; manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key.
Transcoding versus encoder settings: what you can check
Your encoder sends YouTube an incoming video and audio signal. YouTube then transcodes that input into output formats for viewers using different devices and network connections. The creator’s practical controls are therefore the incoming resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and stream setup—not a menu for selecting YouTube’s downstream renditions.

YouTube describes the process this way: “YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” Its English-language Help guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, is the basis for the settings below; technical guidance and interface labels can change.

Before the event, start a test stream and check the preview and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. A setting selected in the encoder is not proof that the expected signal is reaching YouTube.
Configure the encoder for 4K at 60fps
Set resolution, frame rate, and a supported codec
Set the encoder’s video output to 3840 × 2160 at 60 frames per second. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs over RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60fps. Choose a codec your encoder supports and that suits your workflow; the bitrate guidance differs by codec.

Use the bitrate for the codec you actually send
YouTube’s English encoder-settings table gives these 4K/2160p60 figures:
| Video codec | YouTube guidance for 4K/2160p60 |
|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10–40 Mbps minimum-to-maximum range |
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
Do not treat the H.264 recommendation as a universal bitrate target or combine it with the AV1/H.265 range. Make sure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate; a connection that cannot maintain it can undermine stream stability. The figures are YouTube’s published operational guidance, not a guarantee that a particular encoder or connection will produce a healthy stream.

Account for latency and HDR requirements
YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams, which are optimized for quality at normal latency. If viewers need very little delay—for example, for real-time interaction—set expectations before the broadcast rather than assuming 4K can use the low-latency mode.

If your production does need HDR, YouTube’s guidance lists H.265 for HDR, does not support AV1 for HDR, and specifies 10-bit for HDR versus 8-bit for SDR. Keep those choices aligned across the source, encoder, and stream rather than treating resolution alone as proof of HDR.
Test and monitor the actual feed
Run a representative test with the motion and audio your event will contain. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast, then monitor stream health and messages while live. YouTube recommends previewing and continuing to monitor audio and video quality. Pay particular attention to whether the incoming stream is stable at the selected resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

Studio does not show the expected resolution or frame rate: confirm that the encoder is sending 3840 × 2160 at 60fps. Automatic detection is the default. If you need manual resolution selection, use a custom stream key and enable Turn on manual settings under Stream Resolution.
-
The stream is unstable or its health is poor: check that the upload connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, and verify that the encoder uses CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds).

The preview is wrong or absent: verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, then confirm that the encoder is actually sending the configured signal. Use Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages to diagnose what reaches YouTube.
