For a multi-file YouTube stream in OBS Studio 31, add a VLC Video source, load the files into its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off if they should play in order. Those settings repeat the local playlist; they do not guarantee that OBS, your computer, network, or YouTube broadcast will stay online continuously.
Choose VLC Video for multiple files
OBS Project distinguishes VLC Video from its built-in Media Source: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” Use VLC Video when the source needs to play several local files as a playlist. For a single file, Media Source is the simpler documented option and has its own Loop control.

VLC Video depends on VLC being installed. Match the architecture: if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. If VLC Video is missing from OBS’s source list, check the installation and architecture first.

Configure the OBS 31 playlist
- Open the scene that will carry the broadcast. In the Sources panel, choose +, select VLC Video, and create the source.
- Add the media files. In the source properties, add the local video or audio files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want if playback should be predictable.
- Set Loop Playlist to On. OBS will start the list again after its items have finished. This is the setting that repeats a multi-file playlist.
- Set Shuffle Playlist deliberately. Leave it off to follow the displayed order. Turn it on only if randomized playback is wanted.
- Choose Visibility Behaviour. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If the source must keep playing while its scene or source is hidden, choose the suitable pause/resume or always-play behavior available in the source settings, then verify it with your actual scene arrangement.
- Leave Network Caching at its default unless troubleshooting points to it. The default is 400 ms. It is a source setting, not a universal remedy for dropped frames, an unstable internet connection, or a failing YouTube ingest.
Check scene visibility before going live
A playlist can be set to loop correctly and still stop when its source becomes invisible, depending on Visibility Behaviour. This matters if you switch scenes, hide the source, or use multiple scenes: the default stops playback while hidden and restarts it when visible. Test scene changes and confirm whether you want playback to restart, pause and resume, or continue in the background.

Set YouTube encoder output to match your stream
Configure OBS’s streaming output for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its published bitrate figures below are recommendations, not guaranteed requirements; the stated minimums are YouTube’s listed minimums.
| Output and codec | YouTube bitrate recommendation | Listed minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps, H.264 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
These values come from YouTube Help’s encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03. Its guidance lists frame rates up to 60 fps. Select settings your sustained upload can support; a bitrate at the recommended value is not useful if your connection cannot maintain it.

Test the full broadcast path
Loop Playlist only controls what the VLC source does when it reaches the end of its media list. It does not keep OBS running, keep the computer awake, repair the internet connection, or guarantee healthy YouTube ingest. YouTube advises testing before going live and says tests should include audio and movement similar to the intended stream. During the broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming that a looping source means the broadcast is uninterrupted.
Recommended Free Tools
- Start a representative test with the intended playlist, encoder settings, audio, and scene transitions.
- Check that the playlist reaches its end and begins again, and confirm whether playback behaves as intended when the source is hidden.
- Check audio and moving video, then review YouTube stream health for ingest or encoding problems.
- If the stream is unstable, reduce output demands to settings your available upload can sustain, and test again before relying on the setup.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is not available as a source | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen or refresh OBS. |
| The playlist stops after the last file | Loop Playlist is off. | Open VLC Video properties and turn Loop Playlist on. |
| Files play in an unexpected order | Shuffle Playlist is enabled or the list order is not what you expect. | Disable shuffle for ordered playback and inspect the playlist order. |
| Playback stops or starts over after a scene change | Visibility Behaviour is stopping the hidden source and restarting it when visible. | Choose the intended visibility behavior and test it in the scene layout used for the broadcast. |
| YouTube drops frames or reports unhealthy stream status | Possible causes include encoder settings beyond the connection’s sustained upload capacity or problems elsewhere in the OBS-to-YouTube path. | Check YouTube stream health, confirm output settings and available upload capacity, and repeat a representative test. Changing the VLC cache is not a general fix for network instability. |
Or let it run in the cloud
