For a Punjabi Gurbani playlist with album art or a slow visual, start with OBS at 720p, 30 fps, H.264, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS. YouTube recommends 8 Mbps video for H.264 at 720p30, plus stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Move to 1080p30 only if your upload connection and encoder can sustain YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps with room to spare. Before streaming, confirm that you have rights to the exact recordings for live use and any archived replay.
Recommended OBS settings for a Gurbani playlist
A mostly static image, album art, or slowly changing playlist visual usually gains little from 60 fps. Begin with 720p30: it is a practical balance for readable artwork, manageable encoding, and a lower bandwidth demand than 1080p. These are starting settings, not a guarantee that a particular computer, internet connection, or recording will perform well.

| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | Use YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations below when this is the selected codec. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live encoding. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | Use YouTube/YouTube RTMPS in OBS when available; otherwise use the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. |
| Audio | Stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | YouTube’s listed stereo starting guidance. Check that the playlist source is captured and does not clip. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Appropriate for static or slow visuals. Consider 60 fps only when motion benefits from it and the encoder and connection can support it. |
YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 ingestion, but do not apply H.264 bitrate values to those codecs. Use the recommendation for the codec actually selected and test compatibility before relying on an alternative.
Choose resolution and bitrate based on the connection
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations vary by output. Treat them as platform targets, not proof that your local setup can maintain the stream. YouTube advises keeping 20% bandwidth headroom above the full stream bitrate and testing under realistic household or venue conditions. Available upload bandwidth at the streaming computer can be lower than the internet plan’s headline speed.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | Conservative choice for album art or a slow visual, especially when upload capacity is limited. |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | Useful when fine artwork or text benefits from more resolution and upload and encoding are reliable. |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | Use when visual motion makes 60 fps worthwhile; otherwise 30 fps is simpler. |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | Choose only when motion, encoder capacity, and network capacity justify it. |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations; the cited guidance does not establish that a particular system can sustain them. If upload capacity is marginal or fluctuates, lower the resolution or bitrate before going live rather than forcing a setting that causes repeated dropped frames. Measure sustained upload performance during the conditions in which the stream will run, and leave headroom for the complete stream bitrate.
Connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream
- Create the stream: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the connection details: Get the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube/YouTube RTMPS if available, or enter the supplied server URL and key. A stream key is a credential that directs the encoder feed to your channel; keep it private and reset it if compromised.
- Set the video output: In OBS, select the target resolution and frame rate, then choose H.264, CBR, the bitrate for that output, and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Set and check audio: Use stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as the YouTube starting point. Confirm that OBS is capturing the intended playlist audio, not unwanted desktop sounds, and watch the audio meters for clipping.
- Test before relying on it: Start the OBS stream and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview before promoting it. Test in advance with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health and audio/video quality.
Check music rights before broadcasting Gurbani recordings
A Gurbani text, composition, or devotional purpose does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast a particular commercial recording. Verify rights for the specific composition and sound recording, the territories covered, live streaming, and any archived replay. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the provider to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. An archived live stream may also receive a Content ID claim after broadcast.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated dropped frames or an unstable stream | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the chosen output is too demanding. | Test under real network conditions, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce resolution or bitrate if needed. |
| Silent or incorrect playlist audio | OBS may not be capturing the intended desktop or application audio source, or the playback chain may be misconfigured. | Check the selected audio source and meters, listen to a test stream, and ensure the intended source is audible without clipping. |
| OBS feed does not connect to YouTube | The server URL, stream key, or selected ingest option may not match the encoder stream. | Compare OBS settings with the current details in YouTube Studio; keep the key private and reset it if exposed. |
| Live stream is replaced or interrupted | YouTube may have detected a third-party content match. | Review the rights for the exact recording and use, contact the rights holder about permission and allowlisting, and do not assume attribution or purchase alone resolves the issue. |
