Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To show a portrait devotional video in an OBS-powered YouTube stream without distortion, preserve its aspect ratio: use a portrait composition for a vertical stream, or fit the video inside a landscape canvas and design the remaining space. Never stretch it to fill the frame. If you want both vertical and horizontal versions, YouTube’s Live Control Room supports layouts for both; set them up and inspect the previews before starting.
Choose the stream format first
Only vertical
Build the scene around the portrait video and use a portrait canvas/output if your encoder and YouTube stream setup accept that format. Check YouTube’s vertical preview to see how the composition appears on a phone. OBS and YouTube provide the aspect-ratio and vertical-stream controls, but the exact clicks can vary by OBS version and current YouTube Studio interface.

Vertical and horizontal together
YouTube’s Live Control Room can create both orientations. Its default vertical layout crops the center of the horizontal stream; the canvas also offers other layouts. With an external encoder such as OBS, choose Encoder in the vertical preview, use RTMP(S), select a second stream key for the vertical output, and send the matching format to each key. Follow YouTube’s current setup flow and verify which output is associated with each key before going live.

YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. Prepare both outputs in advance if you need them together.

Fit the video without distorting it
Portrait video in a portrait frame
Keep the source proportions and position the devotional subject deliberately. Review the vertical preview, especially the central religious image, faces, captions and any text embedded in the video. YouTube’s layout canvas lets you adjust vertical zoom and position.
Landscape video in a vertical frame
A center crop can make a wide source fill a phone-oriented frame, but it may remove content at the sides. Reframe around the important subject, and check that prayer text or other essential details remain visible. YouTube also offers Fit to phone width and Stacked layouts, which can suit content that should not be reduced to a center crop.

Portrait video in a landscape frame
Fitting the complete portrait image into a landscape canvas leaves unused space at the sides. Use a restrained background or another intentional scene element if it suits the design. Enlarging the video to fill the landscape frame crops part of the image; stretching it instead warps the picture. OBS’s Aspect Ratio Guide explains these trade-offs.
Compare YouTube’s vertical layout choices
| Layout | Useful when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Center crop | You want a quick vertical version of a wide scene. | Side content can disappear; position the crop around the devotional focal point. |
| Fit to phone width | You want to preserve the wide source’s full width in a phone-oriented layout. | Unused space may remain above or below, depending on the source and canvas. |
| Stacked | You want separate content areas arranged in a vertical composition. | Each element may appear smaller, so check legibility in the preview. |
| Separate vertical scene and stream | You want a purpose-built portrait composition alongside a horizontal output. | It requires a second vertical stream key and matching formats; inspect both previews before starting. |
YouTube documents the layout choices and encoder flow in its live-streaming guidance. The trade-offs follow from how cropping and aspect ratios work.

Prepare and preview before going live
- Confirm channel access. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance requires channel verification, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and a streamer aged at least 16. Check your account’s access in YouTube Studio.
- Prepare the stream in YouTube Studio. Schedule or set up the live stream, then open its vertical preview and choose the layout. Interface labels may change, so use the current Studio flow.
- Set up OBS output. For a vertical-only stream, use a portrait composition accepted by the selected encoder and stream setup. For simultaneous outputs, configure the horizontal and vertical formats for their respective stream keys.
- Inspect the composition. Check the mobile vertical preview for cropping, legibility and framing. Adjust zoom or position where available. Make sure no essential prayer text, captions or devotional focal points are lost.
- Start only after checking the preview. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream begins. Do not rely on correcting a missing vertical setup mid-stream.
What changes for viewers and channel features
YouTube describes vertical live streams as a full-screen mobile experience and says viewers browsing Shorts may find them; that is a feature description, not a guarantee of reach. YouTube’s feature comparison also says vertical feeds are discoverable in the Shorts feed, unlike horizontal streams, and that vertical viewers see a scrollable live feed. Features can depend on eligibility and current platform behavior.
For a dual-format stream, YouTube says subscribers receive one go-live notification with a shared stream URL: vertical-feed viewers see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version. Both versions share one live chat. Live Control Room combines metrics, while vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours after the stream.

The reviewed YouTube instructions do not specify a different OBS canvas or layout procedure for India, or a special Indian plugin, encoder or paid service for this task. The general eligibility requirements above still apply; confirm access in your own YouTube Studio account. OBS is free software, and no extra hardware is required just to fit a prerecorded portrait clip. YouTube’s encoder guidance discusses optional hardware such as preamps and microphones for live audio, not as a requirement for this layout.
