To solve NYT Strands, use the daily clue to generate likely theme categories, trace words that fit those categories through adjacent letters, and treat the spangram as a clue to how the answers connect. If you get stuck, three valid words outside the theme unlock an in-game hint that highlights one theme word’s letters.
How do you find Strands theme words?
Strands is a themed word-search: you trace letters on a grid to find answers connected to the puzzle’s clue, including a special answer called the spangram. The clue is your starting point, but the answers may be examples or related terms rather than exact repetitions of its wording. Tom’s Guide’s Strands guide describes the core word-search and theme-word mechanics.

- Read the clue literally, then broaden it. Jot down a few likely categories, synonyms, examples, or phrases. This is a practical way to generate candidates, not a guaranteed shortcut.
- Trace plausible words. Scan neighboring letters for a word that fits one of your candidate categories. Submit it when it seems credible, then use what you learn to refine your idea of the theme.
- Build a word family. After finding a theme word, consider other members, examples, objects, or actions in the same category. Keep the clue in view: a word’s presence on the grid does not by itself make it a theme answer.
- Rescan the board. As the theme becomes clearer, previously overlooked paths may start to look meaningful. Look again after each discovery rather than committing to one interpretation too early.
What is a spangram?
The spangram is Strands’ special answer: it crosses between two opposite sides of the board and names the puzzle’s theme. Its meaning can reveal the connection among the other answers, making it useful both as a target and as a clue. Tom’s Guide and TechRadar’s Strands coverage describe its cross-board path and thematic role.

How to use the spangram without spoiling the puzzle
Think of a phrase or compound that could summarize the category suggested by the clue and the theme words you have found. Search for a connected letter path that reaches opposite sides of the grid. If you find it, use its meaning to generate more focused theme-word candidates; if not, keep solving ordinary theme words and return to the cross-board search later.

How do Strands hints work?
According to Tom’s Guide’s gameplay guide, finding three valid words that are not part of the theme unlocks an in-game hint. The hint highlights the letters of one theme word on the grid, reducing the search without tracing the answer for you.
Use this as a deliberate fallback when theme candidates are not producing a usable path. You can keep searching for theme words first; if you stall, look for ordinary valid words to reach the hint, then trace the highlighted letters and use that answer to reconsider the theme.
What should you do when no answer fits?
- Return to the clue and try a different category, synonym, or kind of example.
- Check whether a candidate is genuinely related to the theme, rather than merely traceable on the grid.
- Look for a phrase that could name the whole category, then consider whether it might be the spangram’s cross-board path.
- After a confirmed answer or hint, rescan the remaining letters with the updated theme in mind.
Should you use daily answers or puzzle books?
Daily Strands clues and answers change, so a solution page for one date is not evergreen solving advice. TechRadar’s daily coverage is an example of time-sensitive hints and answers; check the date before using any such page if you want help with a particular puzzle.
A printed word-search book can offer extra word-finding practice, but it is optional. It does not teach or replace Strands’ theme and spangram mechanics. If you choose one, compare puzzle variety, difficulty, print readability, and whether solutions are included.
