Sometimes. A Galaxy software update can fix blur caused by a camera-app or software problem, but it will not correct every cause. Smudged lenses, poor light, movement, shooting too close, camera settings, and lens protectors can also make photos look blurry. Work through the checks below before deciding the phone needs service.
When can an update help?
Samsung says that a software update can resolve app problems, including camera issues. That makes an update worth checking when the blur began alongside a software problem or persists despite basic lens, lighting, and focus checks. It is not a guaranteed fix for blur caused by shooting conditions or a hardware fault.

Samsung’s guidance for the Galaxy S26 Ultra gives a specific, limited example: during 3x zoom adjustments, temporary screen movement and corner blur may occur, and Samsung advises keeping the device software up to date. That example applies to the described model and behavior, not to every Galaxy phone or every blurry photo. Update availability can also vary by region and carrier.

First rule out lens, light, movement, and distance
Clean the camera lenses
Inspect every camera lens and gently wipe it with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Samsung warns that a dirty or smudged lens can spoil a photo. Avoid pressing hard or using cleaning liquids.

Take a steady test photo in good light
Try a well-lit scene and hold the phone still while taking the picture. Dim or difficult lighting and camera or subject movement can make an image appear blurry, even when the camera is working normally.
Give the active lens enough working distance
Close-ups and zoom can affect which camera is active and how close the subject can be while remaining in focus. Samsung’s general US guidance says the standard lens works best at least 12 inches from a subject, the telephoto lens at least 20 inches away, and the ultra-wide lens at least 4 inches away. These are general guidelines, not model-specific guarantees.

Telephoto cameras are intended for distant subjects. Samsung gives a 5x telephoto minimum distance of 30 cm for the Galaxy S25 Ultra and 80 cm for the Galaxy S26 Ultra, so do not apply one model’s distance to another. For close-ups, some Galaxy models offer Focus enhancer, shown as a flower control; Samsung says it can switch to the ultra-wide camera at close range. Feature availability depends on the model.

Test without a camera protector
If you use a lens cover or camera protector, remove it temporarily and take another photo. Samsung notes that protectors can cause focus problems or distortion. This test can show whether the accessory is contributing to the issue.

Review Tracking auto-focus and reset Camera settings
If the camera seems to keep focusing on the wrong subject, check whether Tracking auto-focus is enabled and turn it off as a test. If the problem appears tied to a changed setting, reset the Camera settings using the option in the Camera app’s settings. Menu labels and locations can vary by model and software version.

- Check for a device update: Open Settings > Software update > Download and install on Samsung’s US-documented path, then follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.
- Check for a Camera app update: Open the Camera app, go to Camera settings > About Camera, and check for an update where that option is available.
- Restart and retest: After installing an update, restart the phone if prompted, then take a comparable photo in the same light and from the same distance.
Samsung’s instructions are for the US and menu paths or update availability may differ by device, region, carrier, and software version.

Use Safe mode and decide whether to seek service
Test the camera in Safe mode to check whether a third-party app may be interfering. If the blur remains after the basic checks, available updates, and Safe mode, arrange an evaluation through Samsung service; troubleshooting cannot confirm on its own whether the cause is hardware.
A slight click or whirr from the camera lens can be normal, according to Samsung. A grinding sound, or focus that still fails after troubleshooting, is a reason to seek service.
