There is no universal winner. The right decision depends on your exact model, precision, batch size, topology, power envelope, software versions and the engineering cost of changing platforms.
Start with the workload, not the logo
AI accelerator specifications are useful only when they map to the job you need to run. A training cluster that relies on CUDA kernels, TensorRT, NCCL or other NVIDIA-optimized components can lose more time and money in porting than it gains from a different card. Conversely, a large-language-model (LLM) deployment may be limited by memory capacity rather than arithmetic throughput; in that case, a card with more HBM can reduce sharding and communication overhead.

Software compatibility is often the deciding factor
NVIDIA: the lowest migration risk for CUDA-dependent teams
Teams already using CUDA-specific kernels, TensorRT, NCCL or NVIDIA-tuned libraries can usually reuse more of their software on H100 or Blackwell. That does not make every NVIDIA generation interchangeable: H100, H200, B100 and B200 differ in memory, interconnect and platform requirements. Pin the exact GPU SKU, host firmware, driver, CUDA toolkit and framework versions in your test plan.

AMD: verify the complete ROCm path
ROCm supports major frameworks, but support for a framework name alone does not guarantee that your application will run efficiently. Check custom CUDA extensions, attention and quantization kernels, graph compilers, collective communication, checkpoint conversion and observability tools. A model that launches successfully can still underperform if a critical operator falls back to a slower implementation.
Intel: coverage depends on the Gaudi software stack
Gaudi 3 includes migration tools and reference implementations for LLM, multimodal and enterprise RAG workloads. Confirm that your exact model architecture, operators, precision modes, tokenizer pipeline and distributed-training recipe are supported. Test upgrade procedures and monitoring as well as first-run performance; software maturity and operational knowledge are part of the platform cost.
Memory capacity and bandwidth determine which models are feasible
Model weights are only part of memory demand. Activations, optimizer states, KV cache, temporary workspaces and fragmentation add capacity requirements. Quantization can reduce the footprint, but it may require specialized kernels and can change quality or throughput. Compare the memory needed by your chosen precision and batch size with the physical HBM on the exact accelerator.

| Accelerator or system | HBM capacity | Peak HBM bandwidth | Other published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA H100 | Varies by SKU; confirm the ordered model | Not stated in the cited H100 material | Fourth-generation NVLink at 900 GB/s GPU-to-GPU | A strong choice when CUDA software and scale-up communication dominate; do not infer capacity from the H100 name alone. |
| NVIDIA B200 | Up to 180 GB HBM3/HBM3e in the Blackwell Tuning Guide | Not stated in that guide excerpt | Fifth-generation NVLink | Use the tuning-guide value for the specific B200 configuration, not as a blanket value for every Blackwell product. |
| NVIDIA DGX B200 system | 1,440 GB total across eight Blackwell GPUs | 64 TB/s aggregate HBM3e | Eight-GPU integrated system | These are system totals, not the capacity or bandwidth of one GPU. |
| AMD Instinct MI325X | 256 GB HBM3E | 6 TB/s peak theoretical | 1.3 PFLOPS FP16/BF16 matrix performance; 1,000 W peak board power | High capacity can reduce model sharding, but the figures are vendor specifications and must be reproduced on your workload. |
| AMD Instinct MI300X | 192 GB HBM3 | 5.3 TB/s | ROCm documentation value | Useful as a generation-to-generation reference; check the exact platform and partitioning features. |
| AMD Instinct MI350X/MI355X | 288 GB HBM3E | 8.0 TB/s | ROCm documentation values; precision and partitioning differ by generation | Do not assume MI350-series software or partitioning behavior is identical to MI325X. |
| Intel Gaudi 3 PCIe | 128 GB HBM2E | 3.7 TB/s | 600 W TDP; PCIe Gen5 x16 | Enough for many inference and training deployments, but a smaller memory pool can increase sharding for very large models. |
Capacity is not automatically better performance. If a model already fits comfortably, kernel efficiency, host-to-device transfers, interconnect and utilization may matter more than additional HBM. Conversely, avoiding a second accelerator can remove synchronization and networking overhead, so calculate the complete topology rather than comparing cards in isolation.
Interconnect changes distributed performance
NVIDIA scale-up and scale-out
The H100 uses fourth-generation NVLink with a published 900 GB/s GPU-to-GPU interconnect. NVIDIA’s H100 platform also lists PCIe Gen5, Quantum-2 InfiniBand and Magnum IO for scalable AI and HPC. Blackwell introduces fifth-generation NVLink, designed for improved multi-GPU scalability and reliability. These links matter when every training step exchanges gradients or when inference shards a model across GPUs.
AMD Infinity Fabric
AMD’s Instinct systems use Infinity Fabric for accelerator communication. Measure collective-operation time and scaling efficiency on the server configuration you can actually obtain; a theoretical link specification does not reveal performance through the chosen OEM chassis, topology or software release.

Intel Ethernet and RoCE
Gaudi 3 emphasizes standard Ethernet and RoCE networking. Intel’s product material claims 33% more I/O connectivity per accelerator than an H100 under Intel’s cited comparison methodology. Treat that as a vendor comparison, not an independent benchmark: verify switch configuration, host adapters, cabling, congestion control and the behavior of your collective library.
Platform profiles
NVIDIA H100 and Blackwell
NVIDIA is the default starting point for organizations with a substantial CUDA investment. H100 combines Hopper architecture with NVLink, PCIe Gen5, InfiniBand options and a mature software ecosystem. Blackwell products add fifth-generation NVLink; the B200 tuning guide lists up to 180 GB of HBM3/HBM3e, while a DGX B200 system combines eight GPUs for 1,440 GB of total GPU memory and 64 TB/s of aggregate HBM3e bandwidth.
Choose the exact part by memory, host compatibility and interconnect needs. H100, H200, B100 and B200 are materially different products, so a benchmark on one cannot stand in for another. NVIDIA is particularly compelling when porting CUDA-specific code or validating a complex multi-GPU stack would cost more than the hardware premium.
AMD Instinct MI325X and ROCm
MI325X provides 256 GB of HBM3E, 6 TB/s peak theoretical bandwidth, 1.3 PFLOPS FP16/BF16 matrix performance and a 1,000 W peak board power rating in AMD’s product specifications. That capacity is attractive for large-model inference and fine-tuning where reducing the number of shards is valuable. ROCm documentation also lists MI300X at 192 GB and 5.3 TB/s, and MI350X/MI355X at 288 GB and 8.0 TB/s; those generations have different precision and partitioning characteristics.
AMD’s published performance comparisons are vendor results. Reproduce them with your model, precision, batch, sequence length and topology. Before deployment, test unsupported CUDA extensions, quantization, distributed communication, compiler behavior and production monitoring.
Intel Gaudi 3 PCIe
The Gaudi 3 PCIe brief specifies 128 GB of HBM2E, 3.7 TB/s peak HBM bandwidth, a 600 W TDP, PCIe Gen5 x16 and FP32, BF16, FP16 and FP8 support. Intel positions the card for LLM, multimodal and enterprise RAG workloads, with migration tools and standard Ethernet/RoCE networking. A standard PCIe form factor can simplify use of existing servers, but only if the server’s power, cooling, firmware and OEM support are adequate.

Training, inference and precision: benchmark the real objective
Training and inference stress different parts of a system. Training measures forward and backward throughput, optimizer memory, checkpointing and convergence time. Inference may prioritize first-token latency, per-token latency, concurrent requests, KV-cache capacity and tail latency. Fine-tuning sits between them and can be limited by optimizer state or memory even when raw matrix throughput looks sufficient.
Record results at the precision you will deploy: FP32, BF16, FP16 or FP8 where supported. Peak FLOPS are a ceiling under ideal instruction mix and do not account for data loading, communication, synchronization, kernel gaps or idle time. A useful comparison reports tokens per second, latency percentiles, achieved utilization, convergence or validation quality, power and cost per useful token or training step.
How to test portability before buying
- Freeze the workload. Record model commit, tokenizer, sequence length, context window, dataset or prompt mix, precision, batch or concurrency and target quality metrics.
- Inventory dependencies. List CUDA extensions, custom kernels, attention implementations, quantization libraries, compilers, collective libraries, container images and monitoring agents. Mark which have ROCm or Gaudi equivalents.
- Build a minimal correctness test. Run a fixed set of prompts or training batches and compare output quality, loss curves, numerical stability and checkpoint compatibility across platforms.
- Measure single-accelerator behavior. Capture throughput, latency, peak HBM use, host-memory use, power and utilization. Investigate any fallback operator before scaling out.
- Scale using the intended topology. Test the number of accelerators, placement, collective operations, network fabric, storage path and failure recovery you will deploy. Include warm-up and steady-state measurements.
- Run an endurance test. Exercise long contexts, production concurrency, checkpointing, restarts, thermal limits and driver or software upgrades. Record errors and degraded-performance periods.
- Convert results to economics. Include accelerator and server cost, networking, power, cooling, storage, software engineering, support and expected utilization. Divide by useful tokens, completed training steps or validated jobs rather than peak FLOPS.
Total cost and operational constraints
Hardware price is only one line item. A realistic total-cost model includes the accelerator, host servers, switches and adapters, cabling, power delivery, cooling, storage, software engineering, support contracts and the cost of idle capacity. A platform that is cheaper per card can be more expensive if it needs additional shards, a new network, lower utilization or extensive kernel porting.
- Power and cooling: MI325X is specified at 1,000 W peak board power, while the Gaudi 3 PCIe brief lists a 600 W TDP. Confirm chassis limits, rack density and sustained—not just nameplate—power.
- Form factor: Gaudi 3’s PCIe Gen5 x16 design may fit existing servers; verify airflow, auxiliary power, firmware and validated OEM configurations.
- Availability: Check the exact GPU, memory configuration, server, network fabric and support level. A nominally attractive part that cannot be delivered in the required system is not a practical option.
- Utilization: Include queueing, maintenance, failed-job recovery and time spent waiting for engineering fixes when estimating useful capacity.
No neutral, apples-to-apples price dataset establishes a universal winner among current NVIDIA, AMD and Intel platforms. Vendor peak figures and vendor-run comparisons are directional until reproduced under your conditions.
Common failure modes and fixes
“The model runs, but it is slow”
Profile operators and inspect fallbacks first. A single unsupported attention, normalization or quantization kernel can dominate runtime. Replace it with a supported implementation, update the framework and compiler together, or reassess the platform if the required path is unavailable.

“The model does not fit despite enough nominal HBM”
Account for activations, optimizer states, KV cache, workspace allocations and fragmentation. Lower batch or context length, use an appropriate quantization method, enable activation checkpointing where supported, or choose an accelerator with more memory.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Multi-GPU scaling is poor”
Measure communication time, placement and collective behavior. Check NVLink, Infinity Fabric or Ethernet/RoCE topology, switch configuration, NUMA affinity and PCIe contention. Compare scaling efficiency at the exact batch size and model parallelism you intend to use.
“Porting breaks production tooling”
Include containers, observability, checkpoint conversion, schedulers, health checks and rollback procedures in the proof of concept. A successful notebook run is not evidence of operational readiness.
Practical recommendations by scenario
You already operate a CUDA production stack
Start with H100 or the Blackwell SKU that meets your memory and topology requirements. Evaluate AMD or Gaudi only when a measured capacity, power or infrastructure advantage is large enough to pay for porting and validation.
Your model is constrained by memory
Evaluate MI325X first because its 256 GB HBM3E can reduce sharding. Compare it with the exact NVIDIA configuration and quantization strategy, then verify ROCm kernels and distributed behavior before treating capacity as a performance win.
