NVIDIA has stopped producing the standard SHIELD TV and is focusing production on the SHIELD TV Pro, according to Ars Technica’s October 2, 2026 report. The company also announced that the Pro’s U.S. price would rise to $299, citing higher component costs, including memory. That statement does not say NVIDIA discontinued the standard model because it had “too much memory.”
Is NVIDIA discontinuing the SHIELD TV?
NVIDIA reportedly stopped producing the non-Pro SHIELD TV and is concentrating production on the Pro. This is a production change for the standard model; it is not evidence that the whole SHIELD platform or all support has ended. NVIDIA’s product information continues to describe the SHIELD line and list the 2019 SHIELD TV generation.

The SHIELD TV generation launched in 2019, making the Pro a seven-year-old product generation as of October 2026. NVIDIA has not announced a newer SHIELD TV generation in the sources cited here.
Why did NVIDIA raise the SHIELD TV Pro price?
An NVIDIA spokesperson told Ars Technica: “Starting October 2, SHIELD Pro will be priced at $299. The cost of components, including memory, has increased substantially across the industry.” The company’s stated reason is increased component costs; the statement does not attribute the standard model’s production stop to excess memory or specify how much any individual component contributed.

There is a price discrepancy across NVIDIA’s pages. Its product landing page still displays older prices, while its support FAQ lists the Pro at $299.99. The spokesperson’s reported announcement gives $299 effective October 2, 2026; the FAQ’s $299.99 is the listed price, not the same figure. Check the current listing and retailer stock before buying.
Is “too much memory” the reason?
No. “Too much memory” is not NVIDIA’s reported explanation. NVIDIA’s 2019 launch announcement says the SHIELD TV Pro had 3 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage and was available for $199. Those specifications describe the Pro; they do not establish that the standard model had excess memory or that memory capacity caused its production to stop.

Is the SHIELD TV Pro still available?
NVIDIA’s support FAQ listed the Pro in limited quantities in the United States and as sold out in the EU at the time of the October 2026 update. Availability can change, and the U.S. price or stock status should not be assumed to apply in other regions.

Should you buy a SHIELD TV Pro for $300?
The Pro is the remaining model in the SHIELD lineup discussed here, but a higher price does not make it the right choice for every streaming setup. NVIDIA highlights 4K HDR, Dolby Vision and Atmos, AI upscaling, GeForce NOW, and USB expansion as Pro features. Decide based on which of those capabilities you actually need, and compare current prices, availability, format support, local playback needs, storage and ports, and update status against other devices before committing. Current specifications and prices for competing players are not established here.

NVIDIA documents USB drive expansion for SHIELD TV. If you format a USB drive as internal storage, NVIDIA warns that it is encrypted for use with that SHIELD TV and cannot be used interchangeably with computers or cameras. Consider that trade-off before adopting a drive as internal storage; a drive used in a different configuration may have different behavior.
