ABS, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Siemens have signed an MOU to develop digital-twin technology that would model how ammonia disperses after a leak and help assess ship-safety scenarios during vessel design. The partners have not announced a completed system or proven leak-prediction capability.
What the proposed technology is meant to do
The collaboration pairs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with a digital-twin framework. CFD is used to model fluid and gas behavior; the digital-twin approach is intended to support safety assessment of a virtual vessel. Together, the methods would let designers examine ammonia dispersion in modeled leak scenarios and consider a range of leakage and accident cases earlier in ship design.
That is different from forecasting that a leak is about to occur. ABS describes modeling ammonia dispersion “in the event of a leak.” The stated capability concerns the consequences and spread of ammonia after a leak scenario is introduced, not advance warning of an impending leak. ABS’s September 30, 2026 announcement and Engine Online’s October 2, 2026 report both describe design-stage scenario assessment.
What each partner is contributing
- HD KSOE is to develop ammonia safety systems and lead related experimental research.
- Siemens is to provide simulation analysis and digital-twin technology.
- ABS is to provide a safety-assessment methodology built around digital twins.
The agreement was announced at Gastech 2026. ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Patrick Ryan said the pairing of CFD and digital-twin technology gives designers “a faster, more rigorous way to understand leak behavior.” That is the project’s stated rationale, not a reported measurement of speed, accuracy or safety improvement.

What the announcement does not establish
The MOU describes a development collaboration, not a finished product, operational trial or deployed shipboard system. The announcement provides no timetable, prototype status, performance results or accuracy figures. It also does not describe onboard gas sensors, automatic shutdown equipment, crew alerts or real-time monitoring. Those systems should not be confused with the proposed design-stage modeling effort.
Accordingly, the announcement does not show that the technology prevents ammonia accidents, makes ammonia-fueled ships safe, or has been tested at sea. It establishes that the partners intend to build and apply a method for evaluating modeled leak and accident scenarios earlier in design.

Why the distinction matters
Scenario modeling can help designers examine how a hazardous gas might behave under specified conditions, but a modeled outcome is not the same as detecting a real leak or predicting one before it begins. The value of the proposed work will depend on how the models and assessment method are developed and validated; no independent test report or published validation finding is included in the announcements.
