In the Canary experiment reported in October 2026, choosing a saved-password suggestion triggered authentication, and Chrome filled the password only after verification succeeded. It has not been confirmed for stable Chrome, and the test did not work consistently across devices.
What the biometric password check does
The experiment is designed to put an authentication step between tapping a saved login and Chrome inserting its password. Depending on the device and its supported authentication methods, that could mean fingerprint recognition, face recognition, or the screen lock. Authentication comes first; password filling follows only if the check succeeds. This is the behavior observed in a Canary test, not a guarantee about every Android phone or Chrome version. Android Authority reported the experiment in October 2026.
The relevant Chrome Canary flag is named “Biometric reauth for password filling.” Finding a flag does not mean the feature is enabled by default or ready for general use. Android Authority could not trigger the flow on a Pixel 8, and the report does not establish a stable-channel release.
Is it available in stable Chrome?
There is no confirmed stable release in the reporting available as of October 2026. This is an experimental Canary feature, and its appearance in a test build should not be read as a rollout commitment or a release date.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

The idea has been in development for some time. Android Authority says Google experimented with a similar capability from at least September 2024, put it in Dev and Canary in August 2025, then pulled it before stable release; the flag has since returned in Canary. Separately, Android Central reported in July 2025 that Google was preparing Chrome support for a Google Password Manager setting called “Verify it’s you to autofill passwords.” Google had not announced a broad-release date.
Why add another check on an unlocked phone?
Phone screen-unlock and password autofill are different actions. If a phone is already unlocked, an extra verification step could still prevent someone holding it from immediately filling a saved password in Chrome. That is the practical security rationale; the available sources do not quantify how much this experiment reduces breaches or how widely it would be adopted.

Google has described the broader protection goal for Chrome password autofill on computers. In a June 8, 2023 product announcement, Chrome Group Product Manager Patrick Nepper wrote: “If you enable this feature, you can require an additional layer of security before Chrome autofills your password, like fingerprint recognition, facial recognition or other methods supported by your computer’s operating system.” Google’s announcement concerns the feature on computers; it is useful context, but it does not confirm an Android release.
Can you use another password manager with Chrome on Android?
Yes. Chrome on Android has a documented native integration path for third-party autofill services, including password managers. Google’s developer documentation says Chrome moved planned enablement to version 135 after developer feedback; that version reference concerns the documented integration path, not the Canary biometric experiment. See Google’s Chrome developer documentation.

A password manager’s Android autofill integration is a separate question from whether Chrome itself asks for biometric reauthentication before filling. When comparing services, check these practical points:
- Android autofill provider: Does the service offer Android autofill and can it be selected as the device’s autofill service?
- Chrome integration: Does it fill credentials through Android’s native integration in Chrome, rather than relying on a Chrome feature that is still experimental?
- Reauthentication: Can the manager require biometric or screen-lock verification before revealing or filling a credential, and how is that configured?
- Passkeys and devices: Does it support the passkeys you use and make credentials available on your other devices?
- Fallback and recovery: What happens if biometrics are unavailable or fail, and how can you regain access to the vault?
These capabilities vary by product and configuration. The existence of Chrome’s native integration does not establish that every third-party manager uses the same biometric flow as the Canary experiment.

What if fingerprint or face authentication fails?
The experiment’s reported behavior is that Chrome fills the password only after successful authentication. The available reporting does not specify a complete failure flow—such as retry limits, fallback prompts, or what happens when no biometric is enrolled—so those details should not be assumed. On a device or manager you use today, check its own fallback and recovery options rather than relying on the unconfirmed Chrome test behavior.
