The hardest part of interview preparation is often not finding another question. It is getting enough realistic attempts when nobody is available to ask, listen, and challenge your answer. Local Interview Coach is a small, local-first practice loop built around that problem: question, answer, critique, one focused drill, retry, and a follow-up question.
This is a project write-up by Sanjeev Kumar, published October 2, 2026 on DEV Community. The project description and feature list below are the author’s account; there is no independent feature, security, or outcome audit.
What Local Interview Coach is designed to solve
Interview questions are easy to collect. Rehearsing a complete answer, receiving specific criticism, and trying again is much harder when practice depends on another person’s schedule. Local Interview Coach treats preparation as a repeatable loop rather than a question bank or a one-time score.
- Choose a target: select a role and a practice goal.
- Answer: respond to a technical or behavioral prompt.
- Critique: receive structured feedback.
- Focus: get one priority improvement and an explanation of why it matters.
- Drill and retry: complete a short exercise, then answer again.
- Follow up: receive a question adapted to the previous answer.
The intended outcome is progression to a stronger second attempt, not a leaderboard number.

What the feedback contains
The local model is asked to return coaching data in a defined JSON contract. The project describes that response as containing:
- a score and short summary;
- strengths and improvements;
- five rubric signals covering structure, specificity, ownership, reasoning, and communication;
- one coaching focus with an explanation of its importance;
- a short drill and explicit retry instructions; and
- an adaptive follow-up question.
That structure is useful because it turns a vague “good answer” or “needs work” judgment into a next action. It does not establish that the feedback is correct, equivalent to an experienced interviewer, or predictive of hiring results. The source reports no measured improvement in interview performance, practice frequency, or offers.
Practice modes and session signals
Practice mode
Practice mode is intended for deliberate repetition. You can answer, inspect the critique, complete the drill, and retry without treating the first response as final.
Rank #2
- Updated test materials for applicants who filed on or after October 20, 2025.
- Includes cards covering all 128 civics questions and answers, with illustrations to support easier memorization. Enhanced with historical photos, facts and symbols.
- Includes cards with assembled sentences for the English proficiency test.
- Full deck covers both texts that you will have to take for your Naturalization.
- A 100-question civics deck is also available for applicants who filed before October 20, 2025.
Pressure mode
Pressure mode adds a timer so the exercise more closely resembles a constrained interview response. A timer can expose answers that are technically sound but poorly organized under time pressure; it cannot reproduce every part of a live interview.
Progress indicators
The project lists average, best, and trend signals, along with browser session memory. These are session-level indicators for seeing whether repeated attempts are changing; they are not validated assessments or hiring metrics.
Question coverage and follow-ups
The starter experience includes ten questions. The author describes prompts as technical or behavioral and says follow-ups adapt to what you wrote. That makes the tool more interactive than displaying a fixed list, but the article does not publish the complete question bank, an accuracy study, or coverage by language, seniority, or specialty.
Rank #3
- Essential Phrases: Carefully selected flashcards feature common questions and advice to enhance your preparation and answers.

How the local architecture works
The browser is built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A local Node API owns the model boundary, input validation, and response contract. The described request path is:

- 48 Essential Behavioral Questions: Curated by recruiters and hiring experts, each flashcard provides real-world behavioral questions covering Leadership, Teamwork, Communication, Problem-Solving, Initiative, and more—exactly what top employers ask.
- STAR Framework Only (No Confusion!): Every example answer is crafted exclusively using the proven Situation-Task-Action-Result framework, the #1 structure hiring managers recommend for clear, persuasive storytelling.
- Front Card Structure (Question-Focused): Each card’s front includes: a behavioral interview question you’ll likely encounter, core competencies clearly listed (e.g., "Leadership, Adaptability"), 2-3 alternate versions of the main question to help you confidently adapt on the spot.
- Back Card Structure (STAR Example): Each card’s back is carefully designed to guide you: Full STAR-formatted example answer, expertly written to model top-tier responses, “Make it Yours” tips: Actionable, concise guidance to personalize each answer authentically, "Avoid" section: Highlights common pitfalls clearly so you’ll steer clear of interview-damaging mistakes.
- Comprehensive Preparation Guide Included: An insightful, compact Z-fold leaflet explains the STAR method, outlines how to use the cards effectively, and provides quick-reference success tips—perfect for last-minute prep or deeper practice sessions.
This separation keeps the browser responsible for the interface while the server validates requests and normalizes model output before it is shown. The design also makes the model replaceable: the author says another compatible local Ollama model can be used instead of the default.
Run the local AI version
The following commands are the setup instructions published with the project on October 2, 2026. They are reproduced as instructions from the author, not independently tested steps.
- Install and start Ollama, then download the default model:
ollama pull gemma3:4b - From the project directory, start the Node API:
npm run server - In the project directory, start the web client:
npm run web - Open
http://localhost:5173in a browser.
If a command fails, check that Ollama is running, the model name matches the one pulled, the server and web processes are using the expected project directory, and port 5173 is available. The article does not specify operating-system versions, Node.js requirements, or a troubleshooting matrix, so those details should be confirmed in the project’s current documentation.

Local demo versus the public demo
The public Render deployment is intentionally a sample-feedback demo. It does not claim to run a private local model in a public static deployment. To use the real AI loop, run the local setup with Ollama and the Node API. Treat results from the public demo as an interface illustration, not evidence that your answers were processed by a local model.
Privacy: what local-first means here
According to the author, an answer travels from the browser to the local Node API and then to Ollama on the same machine. In the author’s words, “That means the core practice loop does not require sending the answer to a closed AI API.”
That is an architectural description, not a blanket security guarantee. The source provides no independent network trace, threat model, or privacy audit. Your actual data flow can also change if you alter the application, select a different model integration, expose the server to a network, or add third-party services. Review the code and configuration before entering confidential employer information, proprietary code, personal identifiers, or interview questions covered by a nondisclosure agreement.
Reliability and maintainability features
The project description lists input and output validation, timeout and error handling, contract tests, continuous integration, and privacy/architecture documentation. These are engineering safeguards around the application boundary. They can reduce malformed responses and obvious failures, but they do not prove that a model’s critique is substantively right or that every edge case is handled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere this approach fits
| Practice need | Local Interview Coach’s fit | What remains unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated solo practice | Strong fit: the loop is built for answer, critique, drill, and retry. | No measured effect on interview outcomes is reported. |
| Data minimization | Potential fit when Ollama and the API stay on the same machine. | No independent security or privacy audit; configuration matters. |
| Timed responses | Supported through pressure mode. | A timer does not reproduce a complete live interview. |
| Adaptive questioning | Supported through follow-ups based on the prior answer. | Coverage and quality across roles are not benchmarked. |
| Spoken interview rehearsal | Not described; the documented interface is browser-based text practice. | Use another tool or a human partner for voice, body-language, and turn-taking practice. |
How to use the coach without over-trusting it
- Set a specific role and goal before answering; “backend engineer, explain a production incident” is more actionable than “practice.”
- Write the answer you would actually give, including constraints, decisions, and results.
- Use the single coaching focus for the next retry instead of trying to fix every rubric signal at once.
- Compare technical claims with primary documentation and ask a human reviewer to assess ambiguity, credibility, and communication.
- Keep a private export of sessions only if your local storage and device security are appropriate for the material.
What the project does not establish
The source does not document the friend’s original preparation situation or report the friend’s reaction; a placeholder in the article is not user testimony. It also does not provide benchmark comparisons with other models, independent validation of the rubric, hiring statistics, or a guarantee that answers never leave a machine under every configuration. Those limits matter when deciding whether the tool supplements, rather than replaces, a mentor, mock interviewer, or domain expert.
The Bottom Line
Local Interview Coach is best understood as a structured, repeatable rehearsal loop that can run against a local Ollama model. Its practical value is the enforced retry: answer, receive one concrete focus, drill it, and try again. Use the local setup when data handling matters, verify the architecture you actually run, and treat model feedback as practice guidance rather than an authoritative interview evaluation.
