NVIDIA says the newer model uses less video memory and can increase frame rates, but the available official documentation does not establish a universal FPS gain or prove that any visual-quality trade-off is minor. The key distinction: this model upgrade is not the same feature as RTX 50-only Dynamic or 6X Multi Frame Generation.
What NVIDIA’s Frame Generation Model Upgrade does
Frame Generation creates additional frames between frames rendered by the game. NVIDIA’s App setting, “DLSS Override – Model Presets,” can select a newer Frame Generation model for eligible RTX 40 and RTX 50 systems, provided Frame Generation is turned on in the game. NVIDIA says the upgraded model uses less video memory and can increase frame rates; those are vendor-stated benefits, not a guarantee for every game, scene, or configuration. DLSS is a broader family of neural-rendering technologies that run on RTX Tensor Cores. Frame Generation is distinct from Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction, DLAA, and Multi Frame Generation; the names describe related but separate components and should not be treated as interchangeable. Which RTX cards and features are supported?
| Feature | GPU eligibility in NVIDIA’s cited materials | What it does or claims |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Generation Model Upgrade | GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50; in-game Frame Generation must be on | NVIDIA says the model uses less video memory and can increase frame rates. |
| DLSS 4.5 Enhanced Frame Generation model | RTX 40 and RTX 50 users in selected supported games | Uses additional game-engine data in select titles to improve the quality and clarity of minimaps, interface elements, and other parts of the game interface. NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 announcement directs users to select Preset B for supported titles. |
| Dynamic Multi Frame Generation | RTX 50 Series, per NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 announcement | Adjusts its multiplier toward a user-selected or display-refresh-rate target. NVIDIA says it is currently incompatible with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync. |
| 6X Multi Frame Generation | RTX 50 Series | Generates five additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame. NVIDIA claims moving from 4X to 6X can raise 4K frame rates by up to 35% in path-traced titles on RTX 50 Series GPUs. |
The “up to 35%” figure is NVIDIA’s qualified claim for changing from 4X to 6X Multi Frame Generation in path-traced titles at 4K on RTX 50 Series. It is not a benchmark of the RTX 40/50 Frame Generation Model Upgrade and should not be used to predict that upgrade’s results. Dynamic and 6X Multi Frame Generation also should not be confused with the Model Upgrade simply because all involve generated frames. NVIDIA GeForce announcement, March 31, 2026

How to enable the model upgrade in NVIDIA App
NVIDIA’s support article for DLSS 4 overrides lists minimums of Game Ready Driver 572.16 and NVIDIA App 11.0.2.312. These are the minimum versions specified in that article, updated February 3, 2025; NVIDIA may have superseded them since then, so use current available driver and app versions if the menu or option differs. NVIDIA Customer Care: Enabling DLSS 4 overrides in NVIDIA App
- In the game, turn on DLSS Frame Generation.
- Exit the game to the desktop.
- Open NVIDIA App and go to Graphics > Program settings.
- Select the game, then find DLSS Override – Model Presets.
- Under Frame Generation, select Latest, then apply the change.
- Reopen the game and check its Frame Generation setting and performance.
To undo the override, return to the same setting and choose Use the 3D application setting. NVIDIA’s support instructions for the general DLSS 4 override say to use “Latest”; for the enhanced Frame Generation model in supported DLSS 4.5 titles, NVIDIA’s March 2026 instructions instead specify Preset B in the Frame Generation dropdown. These labels belong to different documented instructions and are not interchangeable. Confirm the current game support list and applicable setting for the title you play. What is known about FPS and visual quality
NVIDIA’s support documentation describes the model upgrade as using less video memory and potentially increasing frame rates. It does not provide a universal percentage gain for the RTX 40/50 upgrade. Your result depends on the game, its Frame Generation implementation, the selected model, and the rest of the system; the official claims alone do not establish how much a particular title will improve.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe “minor trade-off in visual quality” part of the headline is not established by the cited official material. NVIDIA describes interface clarity improvements for its enhanced model in selected games, but that is not independent evidence that image quality is unchanged or that artifacts are minor across all games and scenes. Generated frames also should not be assumed to feel as responsive as conventionally rendered frames. NVIDIA separately says its 6X mode can generate frames with minimal impact to responsiveness when combined with Reflex; that statement applies to 6X Multi Frame Generation and is NVIDIA’s claim, not a measured result for the Model Upgrade. How to judge whether it helps in your game
- Confirm that your GPU is an RTX 40 or RTX 50 card and that the game supports Frame Generation.
- Check whether the game appears in NVIDIA’s current support information for the enhanced model if you want its interface improvements.
- Compare the same game scene and settings with the override on and off; note both frame rate and visible artifacts rather than relying on a single FPS number.
- For Dynamic or 6X Multi Frame Generation, first confirm RTX 50 eligibility and consult the game’s own options. Dynamic mode’s stated incompatibility with frame-rate limiters and V-Sync applies to that mode, not automatically to the RTX 40/50 Model Upgrade.
