Nuclear can provide continuous, low-carbon generation; natural gas can be dispatched when needed; and wind and solar can scale quickly but vary with weather and time of day. The practical choice depends on the site, grid capacity, delivery schedule, firm-power needs, emissions goals, and whether a company is buying physical supply or making a power contract.
For most large projects, the useful comparison is not four isolated technologies but a power portfolio: generation plus transmission, interconnection, storage, grid supply, efficiency, and, where feasible, flexible demand.

How much electricity do data centers use, and what is changing?
Data centers consumed 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2024—about 1.5% of global electricity use. In its 2025 base case, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects data-center consumption at around 945 TWh in 2030. AI is one important driver, alongside other digital services; the outlook is sensitive to efficiency, the pace of construction, and infrastructure bottlenecks. These are scenario-based estimates, not a guaranteed outcome. IEA, Executive summary – Energy and AI

Data centers often run as steady loads rather than following the daily peaks and dips typical of many homes and businesses. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) notes that this load pattern can align with continuous nuclear generation. But steady demand does not mean a single plant must serve every hour: a site can also draw from the grid and use a mix of generation, storage, and contracts. EIA, October 1, 2024

| Measure | IEA estimate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Global physical supply mix | Coal about 30%; renewables about 27%; natural gas about 26%; nuclear about 15%. | The renewables figure groups wind, solar PV, and hydro; it does not give separate wind and solar shares. |
| U.S. physical supply mix | Natural gas over 40%; renewables 24%; nuclear around 20%; coal around 15%. | These are national estimates, not a description of a particular data-center site. |
| Global demand growth through 2030 | Renewables are expected to meet nearly half of additional data-center demand; natural gas and coal together are expected to meet over 40%. | The forecast is a mix of sources, not a prediction that one technology will serve all new load. |
| Renewables growth | The IEA expects renewables to grow at an average annual rate of 22% from 2024 to 2030 in its data-center analysis. | This is growth in renewable supply, not a separate forecast for either wind or solar. |
| U.S. additions by 2030 | The IEA projects over 130 TWh of additional annual data-center generation from natural gas and 110 TWh from renewables, compared with 2024. | These are projected additions in annual generation, not installed capacity. |
All mix and growth figures in this table come from the IEA’s Energy supply for AI – Energy and AI. Global and U.S. shares differ, and neither should be treated as the supply mix for an individual facility.
How the four power sources compare
| Source | What it can contribute | Key constraints and questions |
|---|---|---|
| Nuclear | Continuous generation with no direct CO₂ emissions at the plant. Existing reactors can provide firm power. The IEA outlook places the first contributions from small modular reactors (SMRs) around 2030. | Is the project relying on existing capacity or a new build? For a new plant, schedule, licensing, capital, and interconnection are critical. Nuclear generation is difficult to ramp, so consider how it fits with changing system needs and the contract’s energy and capacity terms. |
| Natural gas | Dispatchable generation that can respond to demand. It is projected to be a substantial contributor to near-term growth; in an EIA 2026 high-demand scenario, gas is assumed to be the primary available source of incremental U.S. generation. | Assess emissions, fuel-price and supply exposure, pipeline availability, plant lead time, and expected utilization. A project may rely on new generation or greater use of existing plants; the local conditions matter. |
| Wind | A scalable renewable source expected to contribute to data-center demand growth. DOE describes wind as rapidly scalable and cost competitive. | Output varies with wind conditions. Evaluate the hourly match to the facility’s load, as well as transmission, storage, firming, and interconnection needs. |
| Solar | A scalable renewable source expected to contribute to demand growth. DOE describes solar as rapidly scalable and cost competitive. | Output varies with sunlight and time of day. Evaluate the local resource, hourly match, and the role of storage, transmission, firming, and interconnection. |
DOE’s descriptions of wind and solar do not establish a site-specific cost ranking, and EIA’s general description of nuclear operating costs is not a current project-cost comparison. The cited sources do not provide a comparable delivered-cost model for all four options at a named data-center site. Costs depend on the project and the surrounding power system. DOE · EIA

Can wind and solar power a 24/7 data center?
Wind and solar output varies, so the output of an individual plant will not necessarily match a data center’s demand in every hour. That fact alone does not show that a company cannot procure renewable electricity for a continuous load. Grid supply, storage, transmission, and a portfolio of resources can help bridge differences between when renewable generation is available and when a facility needs power. The relevant question is how the complete supply arrangement works at the site, not whether one wind or solar plant runs continuously.
DOE identifies grid upgrades, energy storage, efficiency, and demand resources among the approaches relevant to meeting data-center electricity needs. Their usefulness depends on regional conditions and the facility’s operating requirements. DOE, Clean Energy Resources to Meet Data Center Electricity Demand

What do nuclear power agreements actually buy?
A power contract and a physical electricity mix are different measures. The IEA’s supply shares track electricity physically consumed; they do not show which resources an operator has contracted to support. A power-purchase agreement (PPA) may not require the facility to be next to the generator or to consume its output at the same moment it is produced. Contracted capacity also does not necessarily equal the facility’s total energy consumption. IEA · EIA

These agreements demonstrate interest in nuclear procurement; they are not proof that all of a company’s data-center electricity comes from the named plant. The contract’s capacity, energy, timing, and delivery terms determine what it represents. EIA, Data center owners turn to nuclear as potential electricity source
How to choose a supply strategy for a specific site
Use these questions to compare proposals on a like-for-like basis. A national generation share or a technology’s general characteristics cannot substitute for site-level analysis.
- Confirm the power need and deadline. Establish expected demand, load profile, commissioning schedule, and the amount of firm capacity required.
- Check the grid connection. Determine available interconnection capacity, transmission constraints, upgrade requirements, and the schedule for getting power to the site.
- Separate existing assets from proposed builds. A deal using existing generation has different delivery and construction risks from one that depends on a new nuclear, gas, wind, or solar project.
- Compare the supply terms. Ask whether the proposal provides energy, capacity, or both; how delivery is defined; and whether the contract is tied to a specific generator, location, or time period.
- Account for system support. For variable renewables, assess storage, grid supply, transmission, and other firming arrangements. For gas, evaluate fuel access and emissions. For nuclear, consider availability and ramping needs as well as project schedule.
- Model uncertainty and operating choices. Test how the plan performs under different demand growth, efficiency, construction, and grid conditions. Efficiency and flexible demand can affect how much new generation is needed.
- Compare delivered costs and emissions using the same boundary. Include relevant project and grid costs, and state whether the comparison covers plant generation alone or the complete supply arrangement. The cited evidence does not establish one universal cost winner.
What is likely to change after 2030?
The IEA expects nuclear’s role to grow later in its outlook, with initial SMR contributions around 2030; this is a projection, not a guarantee that a particular reactor will be available to a particular site then. By contrast, the IEA’s near-term growth picture includes large contributions from renewables and from natural gas and coal. The technologies therefore address different parts of the challenge: quickly expanding supply, dispatchable generation, and continuous low-carbon generation.

In the United States, EIA’s 2026 high-demand scenario illustrates the sensitivity: it assumes natural gas is the primary available source of incremental generation if demand grows faster than expected. That is a scenario assumption, not a universal forecast for every utility or project. IEA · EIA, Fossil generation could rise with faster-than-expected growth in data center power demand
