There is no single setting that stops Meta from collecting or using all data. The controls have different scopes, and their names and availability are changing during Meta’s staged 2026 rollout.
Where to find Instagram’s privacy and ad settings
Start in Instagram’s settings and look for Accounts Center or, if it has appeared for your account, Meta Account. Meta says cross-app preferences such as personal details and ad preferences are managed in this central area, while choices specific to Instagram remain in Instagram’s own settings. For example, Meta identifies tagging as an Instagram-specific setting. The exact labels and locations may vary as the transition rolls out by country. Meta’s April 23, 2026 announcement describes the gradual transition to Meta Account over the following year.

For a wider checkup, Meta’s Privacy Center groups its guidance around sharing, security, collection, use, and ads, and points to areas such as Manage Activity, Access Your Information, and Ad Preferences. Treat these as places to review, not as a promise that every control is in one menu or uses the same label on every account.
How to turn off or limit activity from other businesses
To look for the control that covers information shared by businesses outside Meta, open the current account settings and search for Activity from other businesses. Meta announced this expanded setting on June 9, 2026. It is intended to let people manage whether information businesses already share with Meta is used for personalized ads and other personalized content, including Feed and AI responses. Meta’s announcement says this change concerns information businesses already share, not newly collected data; that is Meta’s description of the update.

The older setting, Your activity off Meta technologies, is being discontinued. Meta said the change would roll out in stages, starting in the United States and some other countries the following month, with additional countries later. If you cannot find the expanded setting, it may not yet be available to your account or region. Older instructions may describe the retired label, so follow the current options shown in your settings rather than assuming that an old path still applies.
Meta’s 2023 explanation of the previous control said people could review businesses that shared activity, disconnect specific businesses, or clear activity data covered by that control. Those options were described for the older setting and are not guaranteed to remain unchanged in the expanded one. The updated preference addresses a specific activity source and its personalization uses; it does not establish that all data Meta holds is deleted or no longer used.

Access, download, or transfer your information
Meta announced in October 2023 that Download Your Information and Access Your Information were available in Accounts Center for Instagram. It said people could download Instagram and Facebook information together or separately. Meta also said Transfer Your Information had expanded to Instagram, including transfers of photos and videos to other services. Look for these tools in the current account settings; labels or placement can change as the account interface is updated. These tools help you inspect or keep information, but they do not replace settings that govern how activity data is used. Meta’s October 17, 2023 announcement describes their availability and scope.

What these settings can—and cannot—limit
Keep the source and purpose of information in mind when choosing a control. The expanded activity setting is about information other businesses share with Meta and its use for personalization. Instagram-specific settings address choices inside Instagram, while access and download tools let you inspect or retain information. None of these descriptions supports a claim that one preference erases every category of information or stops every use of personal data. Meta’s published descriptions explain the controls from the company’s perspective, and the current menu sequence is not established for every region or account.
