The startup says athletes’ descriptions of ambiguous images can be scored on a 0–1,000 scale to estimate how they respond in high-pressure situations. That is an interesting recruiting signal, not yet an independently established predictor: public material includes company and partner claims, but no peer-reviewed validation study, sample size, predictive-accuracy statistic or pricing details.
What NTangible’s Clutch Factor measures
NTangible was founded by former professional baseball player Dan Connerty, who developed Clutch Factor with Dr. Ed Levine, professor emeritus at the University of South Florida. Connerty told TechCrunch in 2026 that the company wanted to “hyper focus on this idea of clutch performance.”

The assessment is inspired by the Thematic Apperception Test. An athlete is shown ambiguous images and asked to describe what is happening. There are no prescribed right answers. According to Connerty, “The key words that you use, the way in which you use them, and the semantic phrasing associated with it get scored against the neurolinguistic scoring guide that psychologists created, and it shoots out your clutch factor score.”
The resulting score runs from 0 to 1,000. NTangible presents it as a standardized way to discuss a question coaches usually answer through observation: whether a player stays effective, decisive and coachable when consequences rise.

What the published thresholds claim
The numbers circulating publicly are claims, not independently verified benchmarks.

These figures should not be treated as universal cutoffs. A score’s meaning could depend on sport, age, competition level, testing conditions and how an organization defines success.

How teams are expected to use it
Recruiting and roster decisions
TechCrunch reports that NTangible is targeting sports organizations and companies rather than selling primarily to individual consumers. Proposed uses include recruiting rankings, leaderboards, scholarship and name-image-likeness discussions, roster evaluation and identifying athletes who need specific development support.

Coaching and feedback
The company’s NTerpret product is intended to add a profile describing how an athlete responds to coaching and feedback. That could help a staff adjust communication instead of assuming every player processes criticism, instruction or pressure in the same way. Frank Catalanotto, a Hofstra coach and former MLB player, told Future Stars Series that he wanted to “Communicate with players differently and more effectively.”

Season monitoring
Peak Flow describes a score paired with a coaching readout for teams, high-school and college programs, clubs, athletes and parents. Its page says a roster can be baselined and retested during a season, allowing a staff to compare an athlete with their own earlier result rather than relying only on a single tryout impression.
NTangible has also discussed corporate human-resources uses, particularly evaluating responses to pressure and the processing of instructions. That broader application raises additional questions about consent, employment decisions and retention of psychological data.

Partnerships and deployment
Future Stars Series announced a partnership in 2024 and said NTangible testing would be offered at its regional combines and signature player events. The announcement identified Michigan State, Hofstra and Boston College as organizations trusting NTangible. A partnership or event offering demonstrates adoption; it does not by itself establish that the score predicts future performance.
Can athletes game the assessment?
Yes, the public demonstration described by TechCrunch shows that answers can materially change the result. When the reporter answered honestly, the score was 584. When the reporter role-played a calm, elite recruit, the score rose to 802. The article presents this as a possible flaw, not as a controlled validity study, but it is an important practical warning.
Any organization using the test would need a protocol for unsupervised preparation, coaching, retesting and inconsistent answers. A high score may reflect the intended psychological signal, an athlete’s ability to infer the desired persona, or both. Conversely, a low score could reflect unfamiliarity with the format, language differences or temporary circumstances rather than poor performance under pressure.
How to evaluate NTangible against other tools
Clutch Factor should be treated as one input in a broader evaluation rather than a replacement for game film, verified performance, medical information, interviews and direct observation.

What is established—and what is not
It is established that NTangible has built a language-based assessment, markets a 0–1,000 Clutch Factor score and is pursuing recruiting and coaching applications. It is not publicly established in the reviewed material that the score reliably predicts future wins, professional advancement or performance in a defined pressure situation. The 750 and 800 thresholds, the All-American percentage and the “14 times better” comparison remain attributed claims.

For a coach, the sensible use is exploratory: combine the profile with observed behavior, explain the result to the athlete, and test whether the recommended communication or development plan produces measurable improvement. For an athlete or parent, ask for the scoring guide’s validation evidence, data-retention policy, retest rules and an explanation of how the organization prevents a single score from becoming an automatic selection or rejection.
