The Fallen is Rose’s first major boss in the Path of the Rat beneath the Paris Streets. The key to winning is not simply avoiding its attacks: strike the rebounding Holy Cross to advance the encounter, punish the claw combo without staying for its turning third swipe, then keep your distance when the whip phase begins.
Reach the arena prepared
The Fallen waits at the end of the Path of the Rat, below the Paris Streets. On the approach, clear enemies in small groups instead of rushing through the passages. Bats can attack from above in the lower routes, so look up before committing to a jump or attack.

Before entering the gate, check the lower-left wall. Breaking it reveals a hidden food pickup that can provide useful recovery for the boss attempt. This route advice comes from the game’s guide coverage, rather than an official map description.
The fight’s central rule: hit the Holy Cross
The Fallen throws a large Holy Cross that spins and ricochets around the arena walls. Treating it as a projectile to dodge forever makes the fight much harder. Face the cross and slash it as it approaches, then keep watching its return path. It can come back from behind Rose while attention is fixed on the boss.

Destroying or deflecting the cross creates the cleanest opening to resume attacking The Fallen. Do not tunnel on boss damage while the projectile is still active. If the cross is behind Rose, reposition so you can see its next approach before committing to another combo.
Recognize each attack and counter it
| Attack or phase | What to watch for | Reliable response |
|---|---|---|
| Holy Cross | A large cross spins and rebounds from the arena walls. | Face it and strike as it comes through; track its return route and remove it before focusing on boss damage. |
| Three-hit claw combo | The Fallen jumps toward Rose and swipes three times. The third swipe turns back toward her. | Move behind the boss for the opening swipes, then stop attacking and reposition before the third swipe. |
| Whip phase | At roughly half health, The Fallen adds a long, straight whip lash. | Read the wind-up, dodge under the lash, and counter during the recovery window. |
Three-hit claw combo
When The Fallen leaps toward Rose, expect three swipes rather than one extended hit. Move behind the boss after the opening swipes, but do not remain there to force a long damage string. The third swipe turns toward Rose and catches players who assume the attack is already finished.

Start with one counterattack per opening. That conservative rhythm gives you time to confirm the third swipe has ended and to regain a clear position. Once the pattern feels consistent, add attacks only when you can still see the boss’s next movement.

Whip phase
After The Fallen reaches approximately half health, it gains a far-reaching whip attack. The straight lash makes panic retreat unreliable because the attack covers a large portion of the arena. Watch the wind-up, stay close enough to react, and dodge under the whip’s path rather than automatically running away.

The recovery after a missed or completed lash is your counter window. Use a short attack, then reset your spacing. The fight rewards reading the animation and using dodge invincibility frames, not repeated attempts to overpower the boss.
A practical step-by-step plan
- Enter with a visible arena. Clear the approach enemies, collect the lower-left food pickup, and avoid starting the fight while bats or other threats are still distracting you.
- Prioritize the Holy Cross. When it is thrown, stop chasing damage and face the projectile. Slash it on its approach and prepare for the rebound.
- Take short claw counters. After the first swipes, move behind The Fallen, land a measured hit, and move again before the turning third swipe.
- Change your spacing at half health. Expect the whip as soon as the second phase begins. Keep the boss and its wind-up in view.
- Dodge under the lash. Move beneath the straight whip path, then use the recovery animation for a counterattack.
- Repeat patiently. If a pattern breaks down, return to one counter per opening. The encounter is designed around learning attacks through repetition.
Choosing a safer approach
The available early sword and fireball tools are sufficient for this fight. A close-range sword counter can produce stronger immediate pressure during claw recovery, but it exposes Rose to the turning third swipe if you overcommit. Fireballs offer a safer way to keep dealing damage while learning the patterns, although they do not remove the need to deal with the Holy Cross or read the whip.

There is no published frame data, exact damage-per-second comparison, boss health total, or frame-perfect timing for this encounter. Use the sword when the recovery is clearly open and fireballs when maintaining distance helps you see the projectile and whip wind-ups.
What victory unlocks
In the game’s documented progression, defeated bosses merge into Rose’s tarot deck as Arcana. Once The Fallen’s Holy Cross is tamed, that Holy Cross becomes one of Rose’s abilities.

If you keep losing
- The cross keeps hitting you: stop attacking The Fallen while the projectile is active and turn to meet its return path.
- The claw combo catches you: you are probably staying behind the boss through the third swipe. Attack once, then move before it turns.
- The whip feels unavoidable: watch the wind-up and dodge under the lash instead of retreating in a straight line.
- You run out of healing: use the lower-left food pickup on the approach and clear enemies before opening the boss gate.
- Your timing feels inconsistent: practice the pattern rather than relying on a fixed count. The encounter’s guidance describes qualitative openings, not frame-perfect timings.
The Bottom Line
Strike the Holy Cross, take only brief claw counters before the turning third swipe, and dodge under the phase-two whip. Patient pattern reading is the intended solution.
