It gives you control over the desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, icons, gestures, and saved layouts. Choose Niagara Launcher if you want a deliberately minimal, list-led screen with alphabetical app access and notifications you can act on without opening a separate shade.
Neither launcher is a proven universal winner for speed, battery life, or usability. The practical choice depends on how you find apps, how much layout control you need, your Android version, the paid features you want, and which privacy disclosures you accept.

Nova and Niagara make opposite home-screen trade-offs
Android’s default launcher usually combines a grid of icons, one or more pages, widgets, a dock, and an app drawer. Nova Launcher keeps that familiar model but exposes many more controls. Its official product description centers on the desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, icon themes, and backup and restore.
Niagara Launcher starts from a different premise. Its home screen is intentionally sparse, with an alphabetical route to apps and notifications that can be interacted with from the home screen. Instead of building several pages of icons, you keep a short list of important apps visible and reach the rest through the alphabet.

Choose Nova when control is the point
You want a familiar grid, dock, and app drawer
Nova preserves the mental model used by most Android launchers. You can arrange icons across a desktop, keep frequently used apps in a dock, group apps in folders, and browse the full app drawer when you do not want to remember an alphabetical position. That makes it a natural fit if you already have a layout you like and want more control rather than a new interaction model.
You plan to tune the layout over time
Nova’s official site highlights control over desktop and app-drawer layout, folders, icon themes, and backup and restore. Backup and restore is especially useful when changing phones or rebuilding after a reset: a saved layout can preserve the structure you spent time creating, although app availability and Android restrictions can still affect what is restored.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

You need Prime-only interaction tools
The official FAQ lists gestures, notification badges, and app-drawer folders among Nova Prime features. Gestures can reduce repetitive tapping if you are comfortable assigning actions to swipes or other shortcuts. Notification badges provide at-a-glance counts or indicators, while app-drawer folders let you impose another layer of organization without putting every category on the desktop. Prime is also ad-free, according to the FAQ.
You like icon themes and visual consistency
Nova supports icon themes as part of its customization approach. This is useful when you want icons to share a visual style across different developers, or when you want a compact, carefully spaced desktop rather than the default mixture of icon shapes.

Choose Niagara when fewer visible elements work better
You prefer a list to a grid
Niagara’s alphabetical app access is the defining change. Rather than scanning pages of icons, you move through the alphabet to reach an app. People who install many apps or dislike maintaining several home-screen pages may find that approach easier to keep tidy. It is less suitable if you rely on spatial memory—knowing that an app is always in the third row on the second page.
You want notifications available at the home screen
Niagara’s official free-tier description includes notification interaction and replies. The benefit is a shorter path for handling a message or other alert: you can act from the launcher instead of treating the home screen only as a launch point. The exact actions available still depend on Android notification support and the individual app.
Recommended Free Tools
You want an ad-free free tier
Niagara lists its free tier as ad-free. Customization is limited without Pro, but the central minimalist workflow does not require the paid upgrade.
You are willing to pay for deeper personalization
Niagara Pro expands the otherwise restrained interface with community and curated themes, icon packs, widgets, pop-up folders, and customization for fonts and the clock. A July 31, 2026 feature article describes those additions and related options. Pro is therefore not only a cosmetic purchase: it changes how much information and how many shortcuts can appear on the home screen.
Customization: “more” depends on what you want to change
Calling one launcher more customizable without naming the setting is misleading. Nova offers more control over the conventional launcher architecture: desktop arrangement, app-drawer behavior, dock, folders, icon themes, saved layouts, and Prime gestures or badges. Niagara offers a smaller visual baseline but gives Pro subscribers control over themes, icons, fonts, clock presentation, widgets, and pop-up folders.

What each paid tier costs and removes
Nova Prime
Nova can be installed without paying. The official FAQ says the free version contains ads and Prime is ad-free. Prime also lists gestures, notification badges, and app-drawer folders among its features. The official Nova pages reviewed confirm yearly and lifetime purchase options but do not state a current price amount. Check the price shown in your Google Play account and region before buying; do not assume a price from another country or an older listing.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Niagara Pro
Niagara’s official homepage lists Pro at $24.99 per year or $74.99 lifetime. Those are the published figures on that page, and price or availability may vary by storefront or location. Pro adds themes, icon packs, widgets, pop-up folders, and additional control over fonts and the clock, as described in Niagara’s July 31, 2026 Pro feature article.
Compare the purchase model with your expected use. A lifetime option has a higher initial cost but avoids recurring payments if the product remains useful to you. A yearly option lowers the initial commitment and lets you reassess later. For Nova, you must obtain the current regional amount at checkout because the reviewed pages do not provide it.
Privacy disclosures are different, but neither is an independent security audit
Nova’s disclosed data categories
Nova’s privacy policy, effective April 20, 2026, identifies Instabridge Sweden AB as the operator and data controller for the described services. It lists potential categories that include identifiers, device and installed-app information, approximate location, purchases, and diagnostics, and names several service providers. Nova’s FAQ separately says crash reports and analytics are collected.
These statements describe what the policy permits or explains; they do not establish that every category is collected from every user, nor do they prove that Nova sells data or that no data leaves the device. Read the policy’s specific purposes, retention terms, and provider details if those distinctions affect your choice.

Niagara’s interaction and research disclosures
Niagara’s privacy summary, last updated April 16, 2026, says Firebase interaction reports concern interaction with Niagara itself and do not include app names or how often other apps are opened. It says broader phone-use reports, such as app sessions and unlocks, are not collected by default and are shared only when a user opts into the Digital Wellbeing research initiative.
The same summary says the optional weather widget sends approximated location to a weather provider. If you do not need weather, leaving that widget disabled avoids that particular location-sharing path. For binding details, consult the full policy rather than relying only on the summary.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Android-version compatibility can decide the choice first
Niagara on Android 8 and newer
Niagara’s support notice says Android 8 and above remain fully supported. This is the straightforward recommendation for current devices running Android 8 or later, subject to the normal availability of the app and its services.
Niagara’s Android 5–7 legacy timeline
Niagara says Pro purchases on Android 5, 6, and 7 stopped being available June 11, 2026, updates ended July 1, 2026, and Niagara Pro plus other internet-dependent features are scheduled to stop working on those versions January 1, 2027. The notice identifies version 1.16.14 as the final legacy-compatible version. If your phone runs Android 5–7, verify its exact status before switching and understand that the cutoff is dated, not a promise of continued service.
Nova’s version information
The reviewed Nova FAQ explains particular requirements for its Google Discover companion but does not provide a complete current minimum-version matrix. Check Nova’s current store listing and device compatibility information for your phone rather than inferring support from another Android model.

Ownership and maintenance: separate present facts from future promises
Instabridge announced on January 20, 2026 that it had acquired Nova. The update said “Nova is not shutting down,” stated an intention to maintain compatibility and stability, explore sustainable monetization, and honor existing Prime purchases. Those are statements by the owner at that date. They are useful context for an existing buyer, but they are not a guaranteed release schedule or a warranty of future features.
Niagara’s current product, Pro-feature, privacy, and support pages provide active documentation. Documentation alone does not prove a particular update cadence, so use the support facts that apply to your Android version and the features you need rather than assuming one launcher will receive more updates than the other.
How to test both launchers without committing to a layout
- Check your Android version. Open Settings and search for Android version or open About phone. If the device is on Android 5–7, apply Niagara’s dated support limits before installing it.
- Install one launcher and set it as the home app. After installation, press the Home button and choose the launcher when Android asks. On many phones, the permanent setting is Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app; wording varies by manufacturer.
- Use your real routine for a day. Open the apps you use most, respond to notifications, search for infrequent apps, place a widget, and return to the home screen repeatedly. Do not judge only from the setup screen.
- Record the friction points. Note whether you miss a grid, dislike alphabetical navigation, need gestures, depend on badges, or want widgets and pop-up folders. These observations map directly to the feature differences above.
- Switch back or test the other launcher. Return to the same Home app setting and select the previous launcher, then repeat the same tasks. This avoids treating a first impression as a performance measurement.
- Decide on paid features last. Test the free workflow before purchasing Prime or Pro. Buy only the tier that supplies a feature you actually use, and verify the current regional price at checkout.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“I cannot find an app in Niagara.”
Use the alphabetical navigation deliberately rather than looking for a missing grid icon. Keep only high-frequency apps in the visible favorites area and practice the letter shortcut for less frequent apps. If spatial grid memory is essential to your routine, Nova is likely the less disruptive choice.
“My Nova setup is becoming another project.”
Start with one desktop page, a small dock, and a few folders. Save a backup once the layout works. Nova’s strength is optional control; you do not have to configure every setting.
“A paid feature is missing.”
Confirm that the purchase is attached to the same Google account, then check the launcher’s own settings for the Prime or Pro status. Feature names and availability can change, and some options depend on Android’s notification or widget permissions.
“Notifications do not behave as expected.”
Check Android notification permission, battery restrictions, and the individual app’s notification settings. A launcher can expose or organize notifications, but it cannot create notification actions that the underlying app or Android version does not provide.
“The launcher feels slower.”
No controlled speed, battery, or usability comparison is established here. Check for an overloaded widget setup, animation settings, battery optimization, or a device-specific issue before declaring a universal winner. Compare both launchers under the same conditions and the same set of widgets.
Decision guide
- Pick Nova Launcher if you want a conventional grid, dock, folders, icon themes, backup and restore, or Prime gestures, badges, and app-drawer folders.
- Pick Niagara Launcher if you want a sparse home screen, alphabetical app access, home-screen notification interaction, and an ad-free free tier.
- Pick Niagara Pro when widgets, themes, icon packs, pop-up folders, or font and clock controls justify $24.99 annually or $74.99 lifetime at the published official price.
- Investigate Nova Prime when the feature set fits but you need the current regional yearly or lifetime price before deciding.
- Check Android compatibility first on older phones, especially Android 5–7, where Niagara has explicit 2026 and 2027 service dates.
- Read the privacy policies if installed-app information, analytics, optional weather location, or participation in usage research affects your decision.
Bottom line
Nova is the better fit for an Android user who wants to build and preserve a traditional home-screen layout. Niagara is the better fit for someone who wants the home screen to stay quiet and reach apps through an alphabetical list while handling notifications in place. Start with the interaction style you will use every day, then verify Android support, paid-tier pricing, and privacy disclosures before you commit.
