Notion AI: Create a Custom Agent and Test It Safely on Windows

Custom Agents require a Business or Enterprise plan. Learn how to create one in Notion on desktop or web, define a focused recurring task, set permissions, and validate its behavior.

To get started, open Notion in its Windows desktop app or a browser, confirm you’re in the right workspace, and check your plan: Custom Agents require a Business or Enterprise plan. Then create an agent from the sidebar, give it a narrow recurring job, grant only the access it needs, and test its behavior before relying on its automatic runs.

Notion Agent and Custom Agents do different jobs

Notion Agent is an interactive assistant for tasks such as creating or editing pages and databases, using the workspace and connected-app context you’re permitted to access. Custom Agents are shared workflows configured to act automatically when a trigger occurs or on a schedule. In short, use Notion Agent for assistance you start; consider a Custom Agent for repeatable team work that should run under defined conditions. Notion explains the distinction in its Custom Agents help page and Notion AI documentation.

Check plan eligibility and choose where to work

Custom Agents require a Business or Enterprise workspace plan. Notion describes usage allowances for certain AI features on those plans; don’t assume every AI feature has the same availability or allowance. Notion says Custom Agents can be built, edited, viewed, and used on desktop or web, so a Windows user can use the desktop app or a browser. The documentation reviewed does not describe a separate Windows-only setup flow or specify Windows system requirements.

Before creating an agent, confirm the account and workspace you intend to use. If the agent needs a connected service, check its requirements separately: connectors can depend on the plan, an administrator’s connection settings, and authorization. Notion’s Custom Agents documentation and AI connector documentation cover these conditions.

Create a first Custom Agent

  1. Open Agents. In Notion, use the sidebar’s Agents entry and select the option to create an agent. The available creation choices include AI chat, a template, or a blank agent.
  2. Describe one recurring job. State what the agent should accomplish in plain language. Start with a bounded task and a clear outcome rather than a broad instruction to manage a whole workspace.
  3. Review the proposed setup. Inspect the agent’s instructions, triggers, and access before saving. Adjust anything that does not match the intended task.
  4. Set the instructions and boundaries. Name the pages or databases it should use, specify when and where it should act, define the response format and where the result should go, and provide examples if they clarify what a good result looks like. State what it should not do.
  5. Grant focused access, then save. Configure the pages, databases, connected tools, and channels the agent actually needs. A page mentioned or linked in its instructions is not automatically accessible to the agent.

For example, a first agent could answer questions in a specified team channel using named help pages. Define which channel and pages are in scope, how answers should be formatted, and what to do when the source material does not answer a question. Notion’s guide to building Custom Agents recommends specific context, clear instructions, examples, and boundaries.

Configure triggers and connected services carefully

Set a trigger or schedule that matches the job, and make sure the agent’s access matches the places where it is expected to act. If you want it to use Slack, the workspace must first be connected and access to the relevant channel authorized. Other connected apps may have different plan or administrator requirements, so follow the setup and permissions for each service rather than assuming one connection enables all of them.

Keep access limited to the information and tools required for the task. This makes the agent’s scope easier to understand and reduces the chance that it acts on unrelated workspace material.

Test the agent and inspect what it did

  1. Run a one-off check in the agent’s chat. Try a representative request and confirm that the agent uses the intended source material and returns the expected format.
  2. Check its activity log. Review trigger activity, actions, and errors to see whether the configured workflow ran as intended.
  3. Refine and save. If the answer, routing, or action is off, revise the instructions, access, or trigger and save the configuration. Test again before depending on an automatic run.

Plan availability, AI allowances, connector requirements, and interface labels can change. Check Notion’s current workspace settings and help pages when setting up or troubleshooting an agent.
