Clean a TikTok Profile URL by Removing Its Query Parameters

Keep the verified TikTok host and /@username path; omit the query string and fragment when you need a clean profile link.

To clean a TikTok profile URL, keep the verified TikTok host and the creator path, such as /@username, and omit the query string and fragment. For example, turn https://www.tiktok.com/@username?refer=creator_embed#section into https://www.tiktok.com/@username. This is a practical normalization for sharing or storing a profile link—not a TikTok rule that every query parameter is tracking.

Which parts of a TikTok profile URL should you keep?

A URL has a host, a path, and may also have a query string and a fragment. TikTok for Developers’ creator-profile example uses https://www.tiktok.com/@scout2015; the profile identifier is in the path after the host. A generated profile link shown in the same documentation includes ?refer=creator_embed. That example shows extra query text can accompany a profile path, but does not establish that the parameter is tracking.

  • Keep: the verified TikTok host and the profile path containing /@username.
  • Omit for a clean link: the query string, beginning with ?, and any fragment, beginning with #.

For instance, https://www.tiktok.com/@scout2015?refer=creator_embed becomes https://www.tiktok.com/@scout2015. Removing the query and fragment is a practical transformation for the clean-link goal, not a documented universal canonicalization policy.

How to parse and normalize the URL

  1. Start with the complete URL. Do not treat arbitrary text as a TikTok profile link.
  2. Verify the host. Confirm that the URL is on the intended TikTok domain before keeping or sharing it.
  3. Retain the profile path. For the documented format, this is the path containing /@username.
  4. Build the clean URL from the host and path. Leave off the query string and fragment rather than copying them into the result.
  5. Check the result. It should still contain the creator path and should not contain a ? query or # fragment.

When implementing this in software, use a URL parser rather than splitting the string at the first punctuation mark: query or fragment characters can occur in components that should be parsed according to URL rules. Keep the host and path from the parsed, verified profile URL, then serialize the clean URL. TikTok’s cited documentation does not specify a complete parser contract for malformed links, alternate or short-link hosts, percent encoding, duplicate parameters, username case, or fragments, so those cases need validation appropriate to your application.

When should you keep the original URL instead?

Dropping all query parameters is suitable when your goal is a clean profile link for sharing or storage. The cited TikTok documentation does not say that every parameter is tracking or that removing every parameter preserves behavior for every possible TikTok URL. If a particular link has a purpose beyond identifying a profile, verify that purpose before stripping its query.

What if you want to embed the profile?

Cleaning a link and embedding a creator profile are different tasks. TikTok documents an oEmbed API that accepts the creator profile link as its url parameter and returns embed markup and profile information. TikTok for Developers states: “Programmatically, you may convert a TikTok creator profile URL into embedded markup by using the oEmbed API.” See TikTok’s Embed Creator Profiles documentation for that embedding workflow.

TikTok’s Display API also exposes profile_deep_link as a link to a user’s profile page; its overview says visitors following it are redirected to the creator profile in the TikTok app or website. See the Display API overview.
