VPN apps can work on devices connected to CenturyLink, but there is no verified five-provider ranking or CenturyLink-specific performance test behind a “best VPN” list. The practical choice is between installing an app on each device and using a compatible VPN router for network-wide coverage. Before buying equipment, identify whether your CenturyLink service is DSL or fiber and check your gateway model.
Does a VPN work with CenturyLink?
Yes. A VPN can run as an app on a phone, computer, or other supported device connected to CenturyLink. For coverage across devices, a VPN-capable router can connect to the existing gateway and run a VPN client. That is different from replacing the CenturyLink modem or gateway: CenturyLink equipment compatibility varies by service technology, and its recommended modem families include C4000, C3510XZ, and C3000 models with capabilities that differ by service type. The available official provider materials support a feature comparison, not a ranking of five services. They do not establish common independent performance tests on CenturyLink connections, comparable privacy evaluations, or consistent current pricing. The details below are provider-stated features, not independent findings.

Choose an app or a VPN router
Use apps for selected devices
Install the provider’s app on each device that needs VPN coverage. This avoids configuring a router and lets you choose which devices use the VPN. Confirm that the provider supports your operating system and that its current device policy covers the number of devices you plan to connect.
Use a VPN router for network-wide coverage
A router-based setup can cover devices that do not have a suitable VPN app, but the router must support a VPN client using a protocol offered by your provider. Proton’s instructions, for example, require an OpenVPN or WireGuard client for its router setup; that does not establish that every provider works with every router. Router mode can also omit features available in the provider’s apps.

- Identify whether your CenturyLink service is DSL or fiber, and find the gateway model.
- Check that the VPN router supports the client protocol and setup method offered by your chosen provider.
- Confirm how the VPN router will connect to the CenturyLink gateway. Treat it as an additional router unless your service and equipment documentation confirm a compatible replacement setup.
- Follow the VPN provider’s router instructions, then verify that connected devices can reach the internet and that the VPN connection is active.
Why replacing the CenturyLink gateway is a separate question
A VPN-capable router does not automatically replace the modem or gateway required for your CenturyLink service. CenturyLink says a non-CenturyLink modem must support VLAN tagging 201 and warns that many third-party devices may not work because they have not been tested or correctly configured. Its third-party modem guidance concerns service compatibility; VPN client support is a separate requirement.
Check service settings before troubleshooting
CenturyLink says IPv6 is unavailable in some areas and some modems are incompatible. Its WAN settings guidance advises against changing WAN settings unless a technician or IT professional directs you to do so. If a VPN connection fails, first check the VPN app or router configuration and the provider’s setup instructions rather than changing ISP settings casually.

How to choose among VPN services
- Check current apps, supported operating systems, and protocols on the provider’s official site.
- If using a router, confirm client support for the provider’s protocol and review any router-mode limitations.
- Verify the current simultaneous-device policy for the specific subscription. For example, NordVPN’s cited limit is up to 10 devices, with a router counting as one slot; ExpressVPN says its limit varies by tier.
- Review privacy policy and independent audit information separately; the provider feature pages cited here do not substantiate a comparative privacy verdict.
- Test your own connection if speed or latency matters. The listed protocols and server options do not establish which service will perform best on your CenturyLink line.
