Does Notepad create .txt files?
Yes. You can type text in Notepad and save it as a text document, often with a .txt extension. The extension is part of the filename, not a conversion mechanism: renaming notes.docx to notes.txt changes the suffix but does not transform the document’s internal format. Not every file that Notepad can open is necessarily a plain-text file, and a text document does not have to be named with a .txt ending. The contents and saved format matter more than the label in the filename.

What makes a text file display correctly?
Encoding represents characters as bytes
Encoding is the system a program uses to represent characters in bytes. Unicode text can use UTF-8, UTF-16, or UTF-32. Some files include a byte order mark (BOM) to identify an encoding; for example, Microsoft lists EF BB BF for UTF-8 and FF FE or FE FF for UTF-16 byte order. A UTF-8 BOM is optional, and Microsoft recommends UTF-8 for new applications. These details can matter when a file appears garbled or is interpreted differently by another program. Line endings mark where lines break
Line endings are separate from encoding: they mark breaks between lines. Windows Notepad’s extended line-ending support covers CR, LF, and CRLF. In the update announcement, Microsoft described CRLF as the default for new files. A mismatch in line-ending handling can make text appear as one long line in an older or incompatible application. Does Notepad only handle plain text?
That shorthand needs a version and availability caveat. Microsoft announced Markdown-style formatting features for Notepad in a Windows 11 Insider rollout on May 30, 2025, and said the rollout expanded to Beta and Release Preview channels on June 4, 2025. The announcement described formatting tools and ways to clear formatting or view Markdown syntax. Availability can vary by Notepad version and rollout channel, so those features should not be assumed to exist on every Windows PC.
Markdown is lightweight markup: characters in the document can indicate structure or emphasis. A formatting toolbar or Markdown view does not make Notepad itself a text file, nor does it automatically turn every document saved from the app into a rich-text file. Microsoft’s engineering discussion also describes Windows 11 Notepad as using a plain-text control, while explaining that the underlying RichEdit technology has character-formatting capabilities for technical reasons. How to tell what you have
- If you see “Notepad” in the app window or taskbar, that is the editor.
- If you see a filename such as
notes.txt, that is a document name with a common text-file extension—not proof by itself of the document’s actual contents. - If a renamed file will not open or displays incorrectly, changing its extension again will not convert it. Use an application that supports the file’s actual format, and check whether encoding or line endings explain display problems.
