To make just one page landscape in Word, select the content on that page, open the Page Setup dialog, choose Landscape, and set Apply to to Selected text. For more explicit control, isolate the page with section breaks and apply Landscape to that section. The steps below cover Word for Windows and Mac, plus what to do in Word for the web.
Choose the method that fits your document
| Method | Best for | What to apply |
|---|---|---|
| Select the page content | A straightforward page-level change, such as widening a table or diagram | Landscape to Selected text |
| Use section breaks | Explicit boundaries around the page, or a document where selection-based formatting is unsuitable | Landscape to This section |
Both methods keep the orientation change scoped rather than applying it to the whole document. Microsoft’s Windows instructions describe the selected-text method, while its section-break guidance explains how a section can have its own formatting. Microsoft’s page-orientation instructions and section-break guidance describe these controls.

Change one page to landscape in Word for Windows
- Select the text or content intended for the landscape page. If it contains a table or diagram, select the material on that page rather than the whole document.
- Open Layout, then open the Page Setup dialog.
- Under orientation, choose Landscape.
- Set Apply to to Selected text, then confirm.
- Return to Print Layout and check that the target page is landscape, the pages before and after remain portrait, and the content has not flowed onto unexpected extra pages.
Microsoft documents this route for Word for Microsoft 365 and other desktop versions of Word for Windows. Exact labels can vary between releases. The document-wide Layout > Orientation command changes the document broadly, so use the Page Setup dialog’s scope control for a single-page change. See Microsoft’s Windows orientation steps.

Use section breaks to isolate the page
Section breaks give the target page explicit boundaries, which is useful when you want to control exactly where the orientation change begins and ends.
#1 Best Overall
- Place the insertion point immediately before the target page.
- Choose Layout > Breaks > Next Page. This starts a new section on the following page.
- Place the insertion point after the target page’s content and insert another Next Page section break. The target page is now between the two section boundaries.
- Click inside the isolated section, open the Page Setup dialog, choose Landscape, and set Apply to to This section.
- Check the pages on both sides and inspect pagination in Print Layout.
A Continuous section break starts a new section on the same page. Microsoft describes it as useful for same-page layout changes such as changing the number of columns; for isolating a whole physical page, Next Page is generally the more direct choice. To see where boundaries are, turn on nonprinting characters with Home > Show/Hide. Microsoft explains the section-break types and their behavior.
Steps for Word on Mac
- Select the content on the page you want to change.
- Choose Format > Document > Page Setup.
- Choose Landscape for orientation, then set Apply to to Selected text and confirm.
If you prefer to target a section, first separate the page with section breaks, click within that section, and apply Landscape to This section. Use Home > Show/Hide to inspect nonprinting marks and section boundaries when needed. Microsoft’s orientation instructions include the Mac route.

What to do in Word for the web
Word for the web can insert page breaks, but Microsoft says it cannot yet add section breaks. If you need to insert section breaks to give one page its own orientation, open the document in desktop Word, make the change there, and save the file. Microsoft’s page-break instructions and section-break guidance distinguish the web app’s page-break support from section-break controls.

Every page turned landscape
Reopen Page Setup and verify the scope. For the selection workflow, choose Selected text; for a section workflow, click inside the intended section and choose This section. A document-wide orientation command is not the right scope for a single page.

The wrong page changed, or an extra page appeared
Check that you selected only the intended page’s content or that the target page is between the two section breaks. Show nonprinting characters to locate the boundaries, then review the document in Print Layout: changing orientation can alter how content fits and flows.
The landscape page is intended for a wide table or diagram
Landscape provides more horizontal room for wide elements such as tables and diagrams. After changing orientation, inspect the page and its neighbors to confirm the layout remains as intended. Microsoft illustrates a landscape page within a portrait document.
