Its author describes it as a way to investigate whether a repost may be legitimate syndication or an unattributed copy—not as a proven plagiarism detector or a tool that determines infringement.
What OriginTrace does
In a project article published October 4, 2026, developer Dhruv Jani describes OriginTrace as an AI-assisted content-provenance workflow for DEV.to authors. A user starts with a DEV.to article URL. The system extracts distinctive phrases, searches the web using Serper.dev, scrapes up to 15 candidate pages, compares their text, checks for attribution, and saves the check as structured data in Sanity. An AI agent can then answer questions about the results or draft a DMCA notice for the author to review. Jani’s project description is the source for these implementation details.

The workflow is intended to surface possible matches and organize evidence. A high text match is not, by itself, proof that a page was stolen: the same article could have been republished legitimately, and the project’s attribution checks are a separate part of its analysis.

These percentages describe how the project combines its signals; they are not accuracy rates. The article reports no precision, recall, false-positive rate, or evaluation dataset. In a response dated October 6, 2026, Jani said the hackathon project had no formal hold-out set of known syndicated and stolen pairs from which to calculate precision or recall. His discussion response is a first-party disclosure, not an independent evaluation.
How it treats attribution—and what that misses
After comparing text, OriginTrace looks for visible signs that a candidate credits the original article. The project description says it checks for the original author’s name, a link to the DEV.to post, and wording such as “via” or “originally published on.” It describes two labels: credited_syndication and unattributed_repost.

Attribution and text similarity answer different questions: a close match may include credit, while a page without a detected credit may still have other explanations. The labels are the project’s classifications, not legal findings that a particular use is infringement. Jani said the parser checked visible links in the page body but did not yet inspect the HTML head’s canonical URL. His October 5, 2026 discussion response clarifies that limitation.

The project describes Sanity as a structured ledger for storing each check, with fields including numeric overlapPercent, a verdict enum, attribution booleans such as hasAuthorName and hasOriginalLink, and arrays of signals or missing evidence. Its agent connects to Sanity Context MCP over HTTP, requests an initial knowledge-base context, and uses groq_query to run GROQ queries against the Content Lake. A backend fetchSanityContext() function also prefetches an aggregate snapshot before the agent reasons.

That structure is meant to let the agent filter and sort typed fields when answering compound questions—for example, which candidate had the highest overlap while still crediting the author. It is an architectural description from the project author, not a demonstrated performance comparison with other search or retrieval systems. The project article also says the public ledger is globally queryable; that statement is not an independent privacy or security audit.
What authors can—and cannot—use it for
- Use it to investigate leads. A candidate page, its overlap signals, and detected attribution may help an author decide what to inspect manually.
- Do not treat its label as a legal conclusion. The project has no reported benchmark establishing how reliably it distinguishes theft from legitimate syndication.
- Review any takedown draft. The agent can draft a DMCA notice, but Jani says it does not send notices automatically; the author retains the review step.
- Check the page yourself. Because canonical metadata was not part of the described attribution parser, a missing visible link does not establish that no attribution exists elsewhere.
OriginTrace’s scope is DEV.to in the project description. Support for other publishing platforms, scheduled monitoring, authentication with per-author data isolation, and embedding-based paraphrase detection are listed as future enhancements, not established current capabilities. The author described the agent and Sanity ledger as beta features in a hackathon-scope prototype; a discussion comment about continuing the open-source project does not establish its present release status.
