Which app is better for handwritten notes?
Both apps support handwriting, so the distinction is in the surrounding workflow rather than the basic ability to write with a stylus. Noteshelf emphasizes notebook customization and advertises handwriting conversion and recognition in 65 languages. Notability lists handwriting recognition and handwritten math conversion, with some platform restrictions noted in its plan comparison.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe 65-language figure is Noteshelf’s product claim, not a measured accuracy score. If handwriting search or conversion is central to your work, confirm that the specific feature is included in your plan and platform before choosing. Feature listings alone cannot establish which app feels more natural, responsive or accurate in everyday use.

Can you record audio while taking notes?
Notability explicitly lists audio recording, transcription and playback sync. That makes it the more clearly documented choice for following a recording alongside notes. Noteshelf advertises recording audio while taking notes, but the cited product materials do not establish the same time-synced playback workflow. Do not assume the two apps handle audio identically.
Which app is better for annotating PDFs and other documents?
Both advertise document annotation. Notability lists PDFs, documents and slides. Noteshelf lists PDF and image annotation, and its App Store listing also names DOC and PPT import; its product materials advertise a document scanner. Check the file types and device you actually use, since the listings do not guarantee identical import or annotation behavior across platforms.

This emphasis suits readers who want their notes to behave like a deliberately structured collection. Noteshelf advertises 200+ templates in its store listings; that is a vendor count, not an independent assessment of template quality.

Noteshelf lists AI generation, page summaries, translation and explanations. The cited listings do not show that its tools or usage limits match Notability’s. Do Notability and Noteshelf sync across devices?
Platform availability and synchronization are separate questions. Notability advertises Mac, Windows, iPad, iPhone, Android and web access, while its plan comparison says syncing across devices is through Notability Cloud. Noteshelf materials list Apple and Android apps and link to a Windows option; its Android listing describes Google Drive sync across Android devices. These descriptions do not establish seamless syncing across all platforms for either app.
Before relying on a cross-device workflow, verify that the exact devices you own are supported and that the required sync method is available on your plan and platform. The Noteshelf Android listing specifically describes sync among Android devices, not a promise about every combination of operating systems.

How do the prices and plans compare?
Notability’s current plan comparison shows free, subscription and one-time-purchase options. Noteshelf’s official Android pricing page advertises a limited free tier and a one-time $9.99 Premium price, while warning that local pricing may apply. These terms are storefront- and region-sensitive; the Noteshelf figure is specifically the amount shown on its Android page, not a universal price for every platform.
Plan contents and prices can change. Compare the current store listing for your country and device, and check whether the features you need—especially AI, handwriting recognition and sync—are included before paying.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Choose Notability if synced audio playback, transcription or its listed study tools are central to your workflow, and its platform and plan conditions suit you.
- Choose Noteshelf if you prioritize customizable notebooks, structured organization, templates, or its advertised translation and explanation tools.
- Compare both carefully if handwriting search, PDF annotation or cross-device access is your deciding factor: both advertise overlapping capabilities, but implementation and availability differ.
- If you write on an iPad, an Apple Pencil or compatible stylus can be useful for handwriting and annotation, but neither app requires one; check compatibility with your iPad.
