For ordinary Nordstrom purchases in the U.S., there is no single stated return deadline: Nordstrom says it reviews returns case by case. You can generally start a free mail return online or bring eligible merchandise to a Nordstrom store, but acceptance is not guaranteed and some items have stricter rules. Check the item-specific exceptions before choosing a return route.
Choose a return method
Nordstrom offers mail and in-store returns for eligible purchases. Mail returns are free; an in-store return avoids shipping. The stated processing estimates differ, and neither is a guarantee of when funds will appear in your account.

These timing estimates come from Nordstrom’s Returns & Exchanges policy. The company’s FAQ notes that financial institutions can affect when a refund posts.
How to return an item by mail
- Open the order or account return flow on Nordstrom.com and start the return. The FAQ also describes a route for customers without an account or who cannot find their order information.
- Choose the prepaid label or QR-code option. Nordstrom no longer includes return labels with orders. Print the label yourself, or show the QR code at an eligible USPS or FedEx location for label printing.
- Pack the item and attach the correct label. Nordstrom warns that misrouted items or items that do not meet its return criteria may not be returned or refunded.
- Allow 8–12 business days for return processing. Nordstrom says to expect the refund 3–5 business days after processing; your financial institution may take additional time to post it.
How to return an item in a store
Take eligible merchandise to a Nordstrom store and go to any register for help. The FAQ recommends bringing the receipt and the original payment form. Fine jewelry has a specific store requirement: it must go to a Nordstrom location with a Fine Jewelry department. Other exceptions, including boutique purchases and Canadian orders, can limit which store will accept a return.

How refunds are issued
- Receipt available: Nordstrom says it refunds the original form of payment.
- Gift receipt: The refund may go to the original tender or to a Nordstrom gift card.
- Paid with a gift card: The FAQ says the credited amount is returned on a digital gift card. A gift return also receives a gift card.
- No record of sale: If Nordstrom elects to issue a refund, it may ask for identification and refund the item’s current price on a Nordstrom gift card.
Refund timing is an estimate, not a promise of bank posting time; Nordstrom says the financial institution can affect when the credit appears.
Items and purchases with special return rules
- Gift cards: Cannot be returned.
- Fine jewelry: Cannot be returned by mail. Take it to a Nordstrom store with a Fine Jewelry department and bring the order confirmation and/or the card used.
- Car seats and bases: Accepted for return only in their original, unopened boxes.
- Watchfinder & Co. pre-owned items bought from Nordstrom: Final sale; Nordstrom says these items are not eligible for refunds or exchanges, overriding the general policy.
- Boutique purchases: Must be returned to the store where originally purchased.
- Balsam Hill: Returns and exchanges are accepted within 30 days of purchase or before December 25, whichever comes first. Nordstrom directs customers to call customer care for a label and says these products are not accepted in stores or through the ordinary mail-return method. Confirm instructions with customer care before shipping.
- Casper Bed: Nordstrom directs customers to call for inquiries and assistance.
Nordstrom Rack, international orders, and third-party sellers
Can you return a Nordstrom purchase to Nordstrom Rack?
Eligible Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com merchandise can be returned at an eligible Nordstrom Rack location, but fine jewelry and designer items are excluded. Boutique purchases must go back to the original boutique, and Canadian purchases cannot be returned at U.S. locations. Nordstrom Rack purchases follow Rack’s own policy; do not apply Nordstrom’s general terms to them.

International orders
International orders use a different process. Nordstrom says international Nordstrom.com orders handled through Borderfree or ESW do not qualify for free returns or merchandise exchanges. Follow the instructions for the relevant country and order.

Third-party seller orders
Seller purchases may have seller-specific return-by dates and condition requirements. Check the order history and the seller’s instructions instead of assuming Nordstrom’s general policy applies.

What if you want an exchange?
Nordstrom’s FAQ points customers to order a replacement item online or call customer care for help. It does not promise a direct exchange transaction at a store counter.
Check the policy that applies to your order
Nordstrom describes its ordinary returns as case-by-case, not as an unlimited return window. Its current policy states, “We handle returns on a case-by-case basis with the ultimate goal of making our customers happy.” That statement does not guarantee that a particular item will be accepted. Review the live Returns & Exchanges policy and FAQ for your order before mailing an item, especially if it falls under one of the exceptions above.
