Some older games can look sharper or run more smoothly on PS5 Pro, but the difference depends on the title. Games with a dedicated PS5 Pro enhancement can use specific Pro features; Game Boost may improve performance in some PS4 and PS5 games even without a marketed enhancement. Neither feature guarantees a change in every older game.
What “PS5 Pro enhanced” means
A PS5 Pro-enhanced game has support intended to use the Pro’s hardware for improved visuals or performance. Sony says more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced; the roster can change, so check Sony’s current PS5 Pro enhanced-game listing for a particular title.

Enhancements are game-specific. Depending on the title, they may affect image clarity or resolution, frame rate, or ray tracing. A label does not mean every feature improves at once, nor does it establish a specific resolution or frame rate unless the game’s own details say so.
How Game Boost can affect older games
Game Boost is separate from a dedicated Pro enhancement. Sony says it can provide “faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 and PS5 console’s greatest games.” The key word is “some”: Sony does not promise a benefit for every backward-compatible game.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
PS5 Pro can play over 8,500 PS4 games, according to Sony. That compatibility figure is not a count of games improved by Game Boost. A compatible PS4 game may play without a documented Pro-specific change, while some PS4 and PS5 games may see faster or steadier performance through Game Boost.
Where PSSR fits
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-based upscaling technology. It can improve image presentation in compatible games, but it is not a universal filter applied to every older title. Sony says results vary by game.
On March 16, 2026, Sony announced broader support for an upgraded PSSR version. It said owners could enable the updated image-quality setting in supported games and named Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill f, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Alan Wake 2, Control, and Monster Hunter Wilds. Remedy Entertainment graphics technical director Tatu Aalto said the upgraded PSSR improves image upscaling quality and stability; that is Remedy’s assessment, not a guarantee of the same result in every game. See Sony’s March 2026 PSSR announcement for details and supported-game information.

How to check a specific older game
- Look for a dedicated enhancement. Check Sony’s current PS5 Pro enhanced-game listing and the game publisher’s current support or update information.
- Check what the enhancement changes. Look for explicit details about image quality, resolution, frame rate, ray tracing, or PSSR. A general enhancement label alone does not specify the result.
- Check whether a patch or setting is required. Some features depend on game support or a software update. For updated PSSR, use the supported game’s image-quality setting where available.
- Separate Game Boost from a named enhancement. Sony describes Game Boost benefits for some PS4 and PS5 games, but the product information does not establish a title-by-title result for every game.
- Consider the display. Sony’s 60fps, up-to-120fps, ray-tracing, and AI-enhanced 4K descriptions apply to compatible games and may require a compatible display. They are capability statements, not settings every older game will reach.
If a game is absent from Sony’s current enhancement listing, that does not prove it has no performance difference; it means a dedicated enhancement is not documented there. Check the game’s current support information rather than assuming the Pro will change it.
Is the PS5 Pro upgrade worthwhile for older games?
The upgrade case is strongest if the older games you play are specifically enhanced or have a documented Game Boost or PSSR benefit—and if those changes address what matters to you, such as sharper image quality or smoother performance. If your favorites have no documented Pro-specific support, the available information does not establish that they will look or run differently. Sony’s list and game support can change, so verify the titles you care about before deciding whether to buy a PS5 Pro console.
