Bitwarden is the better default for most people who want a capable free password manager: its free offering lists unlimited passwords and devices, while NordPass Free allows one active device session at a time. For paid users, the choice is closer: Bitwarden publishes clear annual prices, while NordPass offers features such as Password Health and a Data Breach Scanner. Neither provider’s disclosures establish that it is categorically more secure.

How do the free plans compare?
Bitwarden Free: unlimited devices and passwords
Bitwarden’s official pricing page lists unlimited devices and passwords among its core features. That makes the free tier a practical choice if you regularly move between a phone, computer, and browser or want your vault available on more than one device.
NordPass Free: one active device session
NordPass permits installing its app or browser extension on multiple devices, but its Free plan support page says only one device session can be active at a time. You can switch between devices, but simultaneous access requires a paid tier. NordPass Premium allows active sessions on unlimited devices.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
If you want a free vault open on multiple devices at once, this difference makes Bitwarden the straightforward choice. If you use one device at a time and prefer NordPass’s features, check whether its free-plan limits suit your routine.

Bitwarden’s published annual rates make budgeting easier. For NordPass, compare the price shown for your region and billing term with the features you would actually use; the available page does not support a reliable price comparison here.

Which paid features are different?
NordPass emphasizes vault checks and breach alerts
NordPass lists Password Health and Data Breach Scanner among Premium features, alongside secure item sharing, file attachments, and access on multiple devices. These tools may appeal if you want prompts to review weak or reused passwords and alerts related to exposed information. Confirm the current tier for each feature on the NordPass plan page, since plan packaging can change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Bitwarden lists passkeys, sharing, and vault health
Bitwarden’s pricing page lists passkey management, encrypted sharing, hardware-key MFA, and vault health reports among its features. The page also identifies open-source security and zero-knowledge encryption as core attributes. Check the current plan details to confirm where a specific feature is included.
Rank #3
Both products offer tools beyond storing passwords. The useful distinction is whether you value NordPass’s named Password Health and Data Breach Scanner features or Bitwarden’s published free multi-device access and feature set. Compare the current tier details rather than assuming that similarly named tools work identically.
Does either service have stronger security?
The available vendor disclosures do not establish a categorical security winner. Bitwarden describes its product as open source and using zero-knowledge encryption. NordPass says it uses a zero-knowledge architecture, encrypts data locally before upload, uses XChaCha20 for vault encryption, and undergoes independent third-party audits.
Rank #4
- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
These are each company’s descriptions of its own service, not a like-for-like independent assessment. NordPass’s security page does not provide audit dates, reports, scope, or assessor names in the material available here. Bitwarden’s pricing page likewise is not an independent validation of its implementation. The choice of an encryption algorithm by itself does not show that one service is safer overall.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYour own setup also matters: use a strong, unique master password, enable multifactor authentication, protect the devices that can open your vault, and understand the account recovery process before you need it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you use a hardware security key for MFA?
Both services document hardware security-key support. NordPass’s MFA page names YubiKey as an example; Bitwarden lists hardware-key MFA on its pricing page. A security key is an optional extra layer, not a substitute for a strong master password or secure device. Check that the key’s connector and authentication method work with your devices and the service before buying one.
Quick Recap
How to make the choice
- Decide whether you need simultaneous access on several devices for free. If you do, Bitwarden’s listed unlimited-device free offering is the stronger fit. NordPass Free is limited to one active device session at a time.
- For a paid plan, compare the live checkout details. Bitwarden publishes annual prices in USD before taxes. NordPass’s current personal price was not available in the page retrieval; check its pricing page for your region, billing term, and taxes.
- Match features to your habits. Consider whether Password Health, Data Breach Scanner, file attachments, passkey management, encrypted sharing, or vault health reports are useful to you, and verify the tier that includes each one.
- Set up account protection before storing everything. Choose a strong master password, enable an available MFA method, and make sure you understand how you will regain access if you lose a device or authentication method.
