Drawing a black rectangle over lease text in a Node.js PDF is not secure redaction: it can cover text on screen without removing the text from the PDF. In particular, pdf-lib documents rectangle-drawing methods but says it has no API for removing or editing ordinary page text outside form fields. Use a workflow that applies content removal, handles hidden data separately, and validates the saved PDF.
Why a black rectangle does not redact PDF text
A PDF page can contain text and graphics as separate content. A filled rectangle drawn over a paragraph changes what a viewer displays; the drawing operation alone does not show that the text underneath has been deleted. Someone may still be able to select, search for, copy, or extract that text, depending on the file and viewer.

This distinction matters with pdf-lib. Its PDFPage API documents drawRectangle, while the project’s limitations say its documented APIs do not remove or edit ordinary page text outside form fields. Drawing a rectangle with the library is therefore a visual cover, not proof of permanent content removal.

What applied redaction is supposed to do
PDF 32000-1 describes redaction as two stages. First, a user identifies content with redaction annotations; at this stage the markings can still be moved or changed. Then an application applies the redactions: it removes the identified content and the redaction annotations. The standard says conforming readers that support redaction must remove all traces of specified content.

Removal must account for more than visible text. For affected images, the standard says image data must be destroyed, not merely hidden with clipping or an image mask. A black shape, crop, mask, or overlay that leaves underlying content intact does not meet that requirement. See ISO PDF 32000-1:2008, section 12.5.8.4.
Redaction and sanitization address different risks
Applying redaction targets specified visible content and related page content. It does not necessarily remove every other sensitive item embedded in the document. Adobe’s Acrobat Pro guide, last updated September 23, 2025, treats sanitization as a separate step for hidden information such as metadata, embedded content, and scripts.

For a lease, consider both the visible material marked for removal and hidden data that could disclose information. Decide what must be removed under your organization’s review process, apply redaction and sanitization using documented features, then inspect the saved output rather than relying on the appearance of the page.

Choosing a workflow for a Node.js project
Use a PDF application for a review-led process
Adobe documents redaction and a separate sanitization feature in Acrobat Pro. This may suit a workflow where a person reviews the marked areas and applies them in a PDF application. The documentation describes the product’s workflow; it is not an independent test of efficacy.

Use a developer SDK when redaction belongs in an application
PDF.js Express documentation describes browser-based redaction and directs developers to PDFTron WebViewer for “true redaction.” Treat that as vendor guidance, not independent verification of removal behavior or current commercial terms. Before integrating any SDK, verify its documented handling of text, images, hidden objects, output validation, and licensing for your use case.
The available documentation does not establish a complete, independent comparison of these options or certify any tool for every PDF. Do not assume that a package is safe for redaction merely because it can draw on, annotate, or modify a page.

Do not hand-edit arbitrary PDF content streams as a shortcut
Removing text from a PDF can involve page content, images, and other structures, not just painting over a region. The cited pdf-lib documentation establishes its limitation for ordinary page text; it does not establish a safe hand-editing recipe or validate a particular Node.js redaction package. Choose a tool or SDK that explicitly documents applied content removal instead of treating low-level edits as a proven shortcut.

Validate the output before sharing it
A visually blacked-out page is not a sufficient check. After applying redaction and any needed sanitization, save a separate output and verify it with an appropriate review process. Check that targeted text cannot be selected, searched, copied, or extracted; inspect affected images and page regions; and review document properties and hidden content for information that should not remain. Keep the original under appropriate access controls if retention is required, and do not distribute it as the redacted copy.
Validation matters even after content has been removed. A 2022 study by Maxwell Bland, Anushya Iyer, and Kirill Levchenko examined 11 popular tools and document corpora and found that residual glyph-position information could leak clues in studied workflows. The authors reported about 13 bits of information about a redacted surname in a typical PDF authored in Microsoft Word. They also found rasterization increased security but did not eliminate all information leaks. These are findings within the study’s scope, not proof that every PDF or every current tool has the same vulnerability. Read the paper.
