Handle a Claude Message Batch in two layers: use the batch’s processing_status to tell whether the job is still running, then process each request’s result.type on its own. Save successful messages, diagnose errors before retrying, and treat canceled or expired requests as unprocessed. Match every result to its input with custom_id, not its position in the results file.
Batch status and request result are different things
The batch-level processing_status describes the overall job. Its documented values are in_progress, canceling, and ended. A batch is ended once all requests have reached a terminal outcome. Its request_counts reports how many requests succeeded, errored, were canceled, expired, or remain processing; those counts add up to the batch’s total requests. See Anthropic’s List Message Batches API reference.

Each request has its own result.type: succeeded, errored, canceled, or expired. A batch can therefore end with a mixture of outcomes, rather than one result that applies to every request.
What to do with each result state
| Result type | What happened | Next action |
|---|---|---|
succeeded |
The request completed and includes a Message response. | Store the returned message and associate it with the original request using custom_id. |
errored |
The request encountered an error, with error information included in the result. | Inspect the error type and message. Correct invalid request parameters before resubmitting; consider a retry for retryable failures such as server errors rather than retrying every error blindly. |
canceled |
The request was canceled before it was sent to the model. | Treat it as unprocessed. Resubmit only if the work is still needed. |
expired |
The request was not sent to the model before the batch reached its expiry. | Treat it as unprocessed. Resubmit only if the request is still timely and useful. |
Anthropic’s batch-processing documentation describes these per-request outcomes and shows how to inspect results.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Poll, retrieve, and reconcile the results
- Poll the batch. Continue checking while
processing_statusisin_progress. After requesting cancellation, expectcancelingbefore the batch reachesended. - Wait for completion and the results URL. Anthropic provides the results URL when processing ends. A batch expires 24 hours after creation; requests not sent before that deadline become
expired. - Read the JSONL results. The result file contains one JSON object per request. For large files, stream the data rather than loading the entire file into memory.
- Match by
custom_id. Results are not guaranteed to appear in submission order. Do not join input and output records by line number; use the caller-provided identifier to associate each result with its source request. - Process each outcome independently. Persist successful messages, diagnose errors, and decide whether canceled or expired work should be submitted again.
Anthropic states: “Results in the file are not guaranteed to be in the same order as requests. Use the custom_id field to match results to requests.” See the batch-processing documentation and API reference.
Cancellation can leave partial results
Canceling a batch does not erase work that already completed. Requests completed before cancellation remain completed, while requests canceled before being sent are returned as canceled. Process the available results individually; do not treat cancellation as proof that every request failed or was canceled.

Save results before they stop being downloadable
Anthropic documents a 29-day window from batch creation for downloading results. After that, the batch can still be viewed, but its results are no longer downloadable. Persist any messages and outcome data your application needs beyond that period.

Retry errors carefully
An errored result provides error details; use them to distinguish a malformed request from a failure that may be retryable. Fix invalid parameters first instead of resubmitting the same request unchanged. Anthropic’s Claude API Errors documentation covers API errors and retry guidance. Keep the original custom_id in your reconciliation record so an attempt can be traced to its input.
