A “TF card” is commonly another name for a microSD card. To format one reliably, first match its SD capacity standard to the device that will use it, back up any files you want to keep, and follow the device maker’s instructions. SD standards map card capacities to file systems, but the host device may impose additional requirements.
Check the card standard before choosing a file system
Look at the card or its packaging for its capacity and SD standard. The SD Association’s published mapping is:

These are the SD Association’s capacity-standard definitions, not a promise that every camera, phone, computer, or reader supports every card. Check the target device’s manual for supported capacities and formatting instructions. The Association says SDUC cards require an SDUC host; SDXC cards can be used with SDXC or SDUC hosts. Prepare the card and protect files you need
- Copy wanted files elsewhere. Formatting can remove data, depending on the selected option. Do not proceed until you have checked the backup.
- Check the lock switch. If the card has a physical write-protect switch, make sure it is in the not-protected position.
- Use a compatible connection. The card reader or built-in slot and the computer must support the card standard. The SD Association lists USB SD card readers and PC card slots as ways to access cards; confirm compatibility before troubleshooting the card itself.

Use the formatter and mode suited to the job
For formatting an SD card on a computer, the SD Association recommends its SD Memory Card Formatter rather than generic operating-system formatting utilities, which may not be optimized for SD cards and could result in lower performance. Download the current tool and check its operating-system support on the official formatter page.

- Quick format resets the file-system parameters and file/directory entries, but does not delete the data written in files. It is not secure erasure.
- Overwrite format also overwrites the user data area and takes longer.
These mode descriptions come from the SD Association FAQ. Select based on your purpose, and keep a backup if the files matter.

Format for the device that will use the card
- Identify the card’s capacity and SD standard from its label or packaging.
- Read the target device’s manual for supported card standards, capacity limits, and any required file system or formatting method.
- Back up files you want to keep, then check the card’s write-protect switch and the reader or slot’s compatibility.
- If formatting on a computer, use the SD Association’s formatter and choose Quick or Overwrite according to the data-removal goal.
- If the card is for a specific camera, phone, or other host, follow that manufacturer’s setup instructions. Format it in the device when the manufacturer directs you to do so.
Device makers may customize how their products save and retrieve data, so the standard file-system mapping does not override device-specific instructions. The SD Association’s FAQ notes that some products require operating-system customizations for data to be saved and retrieved properly.

If formatting does not work
Before concluding that the card has failed, recheck that it is not write-protected and that the reader, host computer, and target device support its SD standard. Also check the target device’s manual for its required formatting procedure. General SD standards guidance cannot identify the cause of every undetected or unformattable card; these checks help distinguish a compatibility or setup issue from a card-specific problem.
