Node.js on AWS: Choose EC2 or Lambda by Workload

Lambda suits short, event-driven Node.js work with variable traffic; EC2 suits persistent processes and workloads that benefit from server-level control. The right choice depends on duration, traffic, latency, and operational capacity.

For a Node.js backend on AWS, choose Lambda when requests or events trigger short-lived work and variable traffic makes request-level scaling useful. Choose EC2 when the application needs a process that stays running, server-level control, or planned compute capacity—and your team can operate it. Neither is a universal winner: duration, traffic, latency, integrations, operational capacity, and total cost determine the fit.

How EC2 and Lambda run a Node.js backend

EC2 gives you virtual servers. You select instance characteristics and manage the server environment and its lifecycle. Lambda runs code in response to events without requiring you to provision or manage the underlying servers. That changes how you deploy, scale, and operate the application, not just where the same server is hosted. AWS describes EC2 as virtual servers, while Lambda abstracts server provisioning.

On EC2, a typical Node.js application can run as a long-lived server process. With Lambda, execution is organized around invocations: a request, schedule, or other event triggers a function. A Node.js application can use either model, or split work between them when the operational benefits justify the added complexity.

Which workload fits each option?

Decision factor Lambda tends to fit when EC2 tends to fit when
Work pattern Requests or events trigger discrete tasks. The application should remain running as a process.
Duration Each standard event-function invocation finishes within 15 minutes, or work can be safely divided and orchestrated. A task needs continuous execution or does not fit the function model.
Traffic Load varies or may fall idle, and request-based scaling is useful. Use is steady enough to plan capacity or requires explicit instance selection.
Control You prefer AWS to manage more of the underlying compute lifecycle. You need to choose the host environment, processor, storage, networking, or instance size.
Operations Reducing server-management work is a priority. Your team can configure, patch, monitor, and recover servers.
Cost model Charges based on requests and execution duration suit the workload. Capacity pricing and chosen instance types suit sustained utilization.

The 15-minute limit applies to an individual standard Lambda event-function invocation; orchestrating a workflow across steps does not make one invocation unlimited. AWS also notes that most Lambda invocations across its customers last less than one second on average. That aggregate observation is not a prediction for your backend. See Lambda quotas and the AWS serverless-versus-containers decision guide.

How traffic and cost change the decision

Lambda charges for requests and execution duration, with no function compute charge while code is not running. That can align well with intermittent or bursty work. EC2 is capacity-based: you select and pay for server capacity, so a steady workload may make planned instance capacity a better fit. This is a distinction between pricing models, not a cost verdict for an unspecified application.

Do not compare only the compute line item. Networking, data transfer, storage, databases, logging, and the engineering time needed to build and operate the system can materially affect total cost. A useful estimate needs at least a region, expected request volume and duration, traffic pattern, architecture, and supporting-service assumptions; without those inputs, a reliable cost comparison is not established. Use the relevant Lambda pricing and EC2 pricing pages for current rates.

Latency, scaling, and operational trade-offs

Lambda avoids managing server capacity directly, but the function model and its surrounding services still need deliberate design. EC2 gives you more control over the host and how a process runs, alongside responsibility for server configuration and lifecycle. Measure the behavior that matters to users rather than choosing based on a general assumption that one model is faster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Measure end-to-end latency, including P99 tail latency, under realistic concurrency.
  • For Lambda, compare cold and warm behavior and check timeout, error, and database-connection pressure.
  • For EC2, plan health checks, deployment, scaling, patching, monitoring, and recovery.
  • For either model, account for failure behavior, observability, dependency size, and the team’s ability to operate the system.

AWS’s serverless guidance calls attention to P99 latency and resource overhead from extensions and oversized bundles. Those are reasons to measure the deployed application, not proof that Lambda or EC2 will meet a particular latency target. AWS Well-Architected Serverless Applications Lens.

A practical starting design for a Node.js API

Short HTTP requests and uncertain traffic

For a small HTTP API with short handlers and bursty or uncertain traffic, prototype an API entry layer backed by Lambda functions. Keep each handler thin and put business rules in ordinary Node.js modules so they are easier to test and reuse. Use suitable managed services for routing, persistence, queues, and schedules rather than making a function responsible for every concern.

Design functions to be stateless and idempotent: a retry should not accidentally apply the same operation twice. Keep durable application state in external storage. Lambda may reuse an execution environment, so initialize reusable SDK clients or database connections outside the handler when appropriate; do not put sensitive user or event state in that environment. AWS offers Lambda best practices and application design guidance.

A persistent Node.js server

Start with EC2 when the application needs a process to remain alive, relies on process-level behavior, requires persistent connections, or benefits from control over the host. This is a design inference from the service models, not a rule that every persistent workload must run on EC2. Make the server responsibilities explicit: configure health checks, deploy safely, plan capacity, patch the operating system and dependencies, monitor the service, and define recovery procedures.

Separate request handling from asynchronous work

A mixed design can keep user-facing request handling separate from background jobs. Short event-driven tasks may fit Lambda; a continuous service or long-running job may need server-based or container compute. AWS supports using multiple compute services in a workload. Do not split a backend into services merely to follow a trend: compare the operational and deployment complexity with the concrete benefit. AWS’s compute decision guide discusses the available approaches.

Node.js runtime and dependency details for Lambda

AWS currently lists the managed Lambda runtimes nodejs26.x, nodejs24.x, and nodejs22.x, all based on Amazon Linux 2023. AWS lists no scheduled deprecation date for Node.js 26; its projected deprecation dates for Node.js 24 and 22 are April 30, 2028 and April 30, 2027, respectively. These lifecycle dates can change, so check the Lambda runtimes documentation before deployment.

Each supported Node.js runtime includes a particular minor version of AWS SDK for JavaScript v3, and that version can vary by runtime and Region. If your application needs a controlled SDK version, package the SDK modules it uses instead of assuming the runtime’s included version. Also package and pin other dependencies as needed. Keep initialization efficient and avoid unnecessary packages so deployment size and startup overhead remain manageable. See AWS guidance for Node.js Lambda functions.

Checklist before choosing

  • What are the typical and maximum execution durations, including any job that must run continuously?
  • How variable is request volume, and can the workload become idle?
  • Does the application need persistent connections or process-level behavior?
  • What latency percentiles and availability targets must it meet?
  • Do the runtime, native dependencies, or host-level requirements constrain the choice?
  • How will functions or servers access databases and other services without overwhelming them at peak concurrency?
  • Which region and supporting services will the design use, and what are their costs?
  • Can the team operate EC2’s server lifecycle, or is reducing that burden worth the constraints of function execution?

Prototype the likely fit and test the deployed shape under realistic concurrency. Measure cold and warm behavior where applicable, P99 latency, errors, timeouts, and database connection pressure. Then compare the total cost and operational burden for the actual region and usage pattern; without those workload inputs, the best service and total cost remain unresolved.
