If you need a phone now, the iPhone 17 is a reasonable buy if its display, cameras and storage suit you at a price you have verified locally. If you can wait specifically for the regular iPhone 18, wait for Apple to confirm its timing, specifications and price; those details are not established.
Did Apple launch the iPhone 18?
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026. That announcement does not include a standard iPhone 18, so it is more accurate to say that Apple has not announced the regular model in the material available than to say that no iPhone 18 models launched. Apple’s announcement establishes the Pro models, not a launch date or specifications for a standard iPhone 18.

| Your situation | Practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need a phone now and have checked the local price | Consider iPhone 17 | It has a 6.3-inch ProMotion display, A19 chip, 256GB starting storage, and upgraded front and rear camera features. |
| You can wait and care most about the regular iPhone 18 | Wait for an official announcement | Apple has not confirmed the standard model’s timing, specifications or price. |
| You are comparing iPhone 17 with iPhone 18 Pro | Compare the models for your needs and budget | The 2026 announcement gives specifications for the Pro models only; it does not establish what the standard iPhone 18 will offer. |
The right choice depends on whether you need a phone before Apple provides firm details about the standard iPhone 18. Do not buy on the assumption that an unannounced model will have a particular camera, chip, battery or price.

What does the iPhone 17 cost?
A reliable current street price is not established by the cited Apple materials. Apple’s UK 2025 announcement gives product and availability details, not today’s price, while Apple’s comparison page displayed dynamic price placeholders. Prices can vary with country, storage, carrier and promotion, so check a live seller in your market before deciding. Apple’s UK iPhone 17 announcement and Apple’s Canada comparison page
Use the verified price for the exact storage configuration you want; the iPhone 17 is offered in 256GB and 512GB. An old launch price is not a substitute for a current local quote.

What does the iPhone 17 offer?
Display and chip
Apple specifies a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion and the A19 chip. ProMotion is the display feature to consider if smooth scrolling and motion are important to you; the A19 is the model’s named processor. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results. Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement
Storage
The iPhone 17 starts at 256GB and also comes in 512GB. Choose based on how much space you need for apps, photos and video; the appropriate option depends on your own usage.

Rear and front cameras
At the rear, Apple lists a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. Apple says the main camera includes optical-quality 2x telephoto, while the Ultra Wide supports wider-angle and macro photography. Those descriptions point to different uses: the main camera covers everyday shots and closer framing, while the Ultra Wide is for fitting more into a scene or capturing close-up subjects.
The front camera has a square sensor and supports photos up to 18MP. Apple says it can capture landscape selfies while you hold the phone vertically, and supports stabilized 4K HDR video and Dual Capture. These are listed capabilities, not a claim that every selfie or video will look better for every user.

Battery
Apple describes iPhone 17 battery life as “all-day” and says it supports faster charging, but the cited announcement does not give a numeric runtime for the phone. That wording is Apple’s claim, not an independent battery test. Your actual battery life will depend on how you use the phone.

What the iPhone 18 Pro announcement says about camera, chip and battery
Apple specifies the A20 Pro chip and a variable-aperture 48MP main camera for iPhone 18 Pro models. It also reports maximum video playback of up to 36 hours for the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max. These are Apple’s model-specific maximum figures, not independent real-world measurements.
