There is no universal winner. NJ TRANSIT is usually the simpler choice when your New Jersey rail line runs directly to New York Penn Station in Midtown. PATH is often more useful from Newark, Harrison, Jersey City, or Hoboken when your Manhattan destination is the World Trade Center or PATH’s 33rd Street station. The right choice is the complete origin-to-destination itinerary, including transfers, station access, fares, and service conditions on the day you travel.
A train can look faster on a map but lose that advantage through a long walk, a missed connection, a cross-system transfer, or a destination on the opposite side of Manhattan. Use the comparison below to choose the route that fits your actual starting station and final address.

NJ TRANSIT vs. PATH at a glance
| Question | NJ TRANSIT | PATH |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it take you in Manhattan? | New York Penn Station in Midtown | World Trade Center and 33rd Street |
| Where is it most relevant in New Jersey? | Stations on the agency’s rail network, including trips that may connect at Secaucus Junction or Newark Penn Station | Newark, Harrison, Jersey City, and Hoboken |
| When is it often the better starting point? | Your origin has a direct rail trip to Penn Station and your destination is near Midtown | Your origin is near a PATH station and your destination is Lower Manhattan, the World Trade Center, or the 33rd Street area |
| How are fares handled? | Rail fare depends on origin and destination | PATH fare is separate from an NJ TRANSIT ticket |
| What can change the answer? | Transfers, timetable changes, station access, and the final walk from Penn Station | Service pattern, destination station, transfer requirements, and the final walk or subway connection |
NJ TRANSIT says five rail lines serve New York Penn Station. That does not mean every New Jersey station has a direct train: some itineraries require a change at Secaucus Junction, and Raritan Valley Line customers may also need to change at Newark Penn Station. PATH is a separate network with a different geography and fare structure, so comparing only the trains’ time in motion can produce the wrong answer.
Where each system actually goes
NJ TRANSIT: New Jersey rail into Midtown
NJ TRANSIT rail’s Manhattan endpoint is New York Penn Station. Penn is in Midtown and is the natural arrival point for destinations around the station, the Empire State Building area, Herald Square, and other Midtown addresses. Whether it is convenient for a particular office, hotel, theater, or appointment depends on the final walk or local transit connection.

The useful question is not “Does NJ TRANSIT serve New York?” but “Can I reach Penn Station from my exact New Jersey origin without an inconvenient connection?” The agency’s five Penn-serving rail lines cover many origins, but line-specific service matters. A trip from one town may be direct while another requires a transfer at Secaucus Junction. Raritan Valley Line travelers may also need to change at Newark Penn Station.
PATH: a different Manhattan target
PATH connects Manhattan with Newark, Harrison, Jersey City, and Hoboken. In Manhattan, its two especially important destinations are the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan and 33rd Street in Midtown. That makes PATH a strong candidate when your final address is close to either station or when your New Jersey origin is already near a PATH stop.
PATH’s 33rd Street station is useful for the Herald Square and central Midtown area, but it is not interchangeable with New York Penn Station for every address. The two stations are in the same broad district yet sit at different locations, have different entrances, and may put you on a different side of your destination. For Lower Manhattan, the World Trade Center arrival can eliminate a long trip south from Midtown.

- Write down the exact New Jersey origin. Use the station you can realistically reach, not the nearest major city. A PATH option may be attractive from Newark or Hoboken but irrelevant if reaching that station requires a long local trip from your town. Conversely, a station on a Penn-serving NJ TRANSIT line may be the simplest starting point.
- Pin down the Manhattan destination. “Manhattan” is too broad for a meaningful comparison. Identify the building, intersection, campus, airport connection, or neighborhood. Then measure the walk or local transit from Penn Station, World Trade Center, or 33rd Street.
- List every transfer. Count a change at Secaucus Junction, a possible Raritan Valley change at Newark Penn Station, a transfer between NJ TRANSIT and PATH, and any subway or local connection after arrival. Include the time needed to find the next platform and pass through station areas.
- Compare scheduled departure and arrival times. Use the operators’ current trip planners or timetables for the specific day. Do not rely on a weekday assumption for a weekend or late-night trip.
- Add station access and the final mile. Include walking from your New Jersey starting point, elevator or escalator access, platform changes, and the walk from the Manhattan arrival station to the actual destination.
- Calculate the full fare. Check the NJ TRANSIT fare for the rail segment and the PATH fare separately when both systems are used. An NJ TRANSIT ticket does not automatically cover PATH.
- Check live alerts immediately before leaving. Planned work, emergencies, severe weather, elevator outages, and altered timetables can change the best route after you have planned it.
Representative origin-and-destination choices
The examples below illustrate how geography changes the answer. They are decision patterns, not promises of a particular travel time. Verify the actual departure, arrival, and service status for your date.
| Origin and destination | First option to check | Why it may fit | What could reverse the choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Newark area to World Trade Center | PATH | Newark is on the PATH network and the World Trade Center is a PATH Manhattan destination, so the route can align the origin and endpoint without routing through Midtown. | A service change, a long walk to the PATH station, or a final address far from the World Trade Center may make another itinerary better. |
| Newark area to an address beside New York Penn Station | NJ TRANSIT | A direct rail ride to Penn Station can put you close to the destination and avoid a PATH-to-local-transit connection. | If your actual origin is closer to a PATH station or NJ TRANSIT has a disruption, compare the complete alternatives. |
| Hoboken to 33rd Street or Herald Square | PATH | Hoboken and 33rd Street are both on PATH’s network, making the arrival station naturally suited to that Midtown area. | The final address may be closer to Penn Station, or the relevant PATH service pattern may be different at your travel time. |
| Jersey City to Lower Manhattan | PATH | PATH serves Jersey City and the World Trade Center, which is designed for Lower Manhattan access. | Check the exact Jersey City station, the walk to the platform, and any service alerts before assuming a direct trip. |
| A New Jersey town reached by a Penn-serving NJ TRANSIT line | NJ TRANSIT | If the train reaches New York Penn Station directly, it may avoid a separate intercity transfer and place you in Midtown. | Some lines and origins require a change at Secaucus Junction; Raritan Valley Line trips may also require a Newark Penn Station change. |
| An origin requiring NJ TRANSIT plus PATH | Compare both complete itineraries | A cross-system route can place you closer to the final address than a one-seat ride to the wrong Manhattan station. | Separate fares, transfer time, station walking, and a missed connection can erase the geographic advantage. |
Travel time: why there is no system-wide winner
The available operator information does not establish a directly comparable average trip time, system-wide reliability statistic, or mode-share figure that proves one system is faster or more dependable for all New Jersey-to-Manhattan journeys. Travel time is route-specific.
What to include in your time estimate
- Access to the origin station: walking, driving, a bus, a local train, parking, or a drop-off.
- Waiting time: the gap between your arrival at the station and the next usable departure.
- In-vehicle time: the scheduled rail or PATH journey.
- Transfers: platform changes, walking through a large station, and the risk of missing the next service.
- Arrival-station exit: the time required to find the correct street entrance, elevator, or underground connection.
- Last-mile travel: walking or taking local transit to the actual Manhattan address.
- Contingency: extra time when you have a meeting, flight, event, or timed reservation.
A route with a nominally shorter ride can be slower overall if it requires a long transfer or arrives far from your destination. Conversely, a longer rail journey can be the practical winner when it is direct and leaves you a short walk from the building.
Fares, tickets, and cross-system transfers
NJ TRANSIT rail fares
NJ TRANSIT’s current one-way rail fare page displays prices from $1.80 to $23.85, accessed in 2026. The applicable amount depends on the origin and destination, and fares can change. The range is not a universal price for every New Jersey–Manhattan trip; use the live fare information for your exact stations and travel date.

Do not assume that a ticket to New York Penn Station can be repurposed for a PATH trip to another Manhattan station. The rail fare is tied to the NJ TRANSIT itinerary and its rules.
PATH is a separate fare product
NJ TRANSIT explicitly states that PATH fares are separate from an NJ TRANSIT ticket. If your itinerary uses NJ TRANSIT and then PATH, budget for distinct fare products and allow time to complete the transfer. The total cost is the sum of the applicable segments, not necessarily the price shown for the first train you search.
How to compare costs correctly
- Enter the exact NJ TRANSIT origin and destination, if using NJ TRANSIT rail.
- Identify whether the Manhattan endpoint is Penn Station, World Trade Center, or 33rd Street.
- For a cross-system itinerary, price the NJ TRANSIT and PATH portions separately.
- Check whether the fare displayed is one-way, and confirm any date or ticket-product conditions shown by the operator.
- Compare the total with the time and walking savings. A slightly higher fare may be worthwhile if it removes a transfer or puts you beside the destination; a cheaper ticket may not be cheaper after adding local transit.
Schedules, weekends, late nights, and disruptions
Both systems publish current planning information, but their service patterns vary by day and period. PATH provides live times and service alerts. NJ TRANSIT publishes timetables and service changes and advises riders to check current information. Emergency conditions and severe weather can alter a timetable after a static schedule was published.
Weekday commuting
On a weekday, compare the departures that actually bracket your required arrival time. A route with frequent departures can be more forgiving if you miss one, while a route with a less convenient connection may require a long wait. Do not infer frequency from a single timetable entry.

Weekends and evenings
Weekend, evening, and late-night service can use different patterns from the weekday schedule. Check the trip planner for the exact day instead of copying a weekday itinerary. A route that is convenient at 8 a.m. may involve a different transfer or a longer wait at 10 p.m.
Planned work and unexpected events
Look for service changes before leaving and again shortly before boarding. Construction, emergencies, severe weather, and station-access problems can change the practical winner. If you must arrive at a fixed time, choose a route with a realistic buffer and identify a second itinerary before departure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Station access and accessibility
Station access is part of the route, not a footnote. Compare the entrance you will use, the distance between platforms, elevator availability, stairs, escalators, and the amount of street walking at both ends. An itinerary that is short on the timetable may be unsuitable if an elevator is out of service or a transfer requires stairs.

Step-by-step planning checklist
- Set the arrival requirement. Start with the time you must be at the Manhattan address, not the time you want to leave New Jersey.
- Find the nearest practical origin station. Decide whether reaching an NJ TRANSIT station or a PATH station is realistic from your starting point.
- Search NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn Station. Note whether the result is direct or requires Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, or another change shown for your line.
- Search PATH to the relevant Manhattan station. Use World Trade Center for Lower Manhattan-oriented trips and 33rd Street for the Herald Square/Midtown area, then verify the exact service pattern.
- Map the last mile. Measure the walk or local connection from the arrival station to the door, including the entrance you will use.
- Record the complete fare. Add separate NJ TRANSIT and PATH products whenever both systems appear in the itinerary.
- Check alerts and access conditions. Review live times, service notices, and elevator information immediately before departure.
- Choose a backup. Save the alternate station or system that could still get you close to the destination if the preferred route is disrupted.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating all of New Jersey as one origin
Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City, Harrison, and a town served by a Penn-bound NJ TRANSIT line are not interchangeable starting points. The station you can reach most easily should drive the comparison.
Using “Midtown” as a single station
New York Penn Station and PATH’s 33rd Street station both serve Midtown, but their entrances and surrounding blocks differ. Compare the final walk, not just the neighborhood label.
Ignoring the Lower Manhattan advantage
If your destination is near the World Trade Center, a PATH arrival there may avoid traveling south from Penn Station. That advantage disappears if your final address is elsewhere or if reaching PATH requires a difficult transfer.

Assuming one ticket covers both operators
NJ TRANSIT and PATH are separate systems. Price and validate each segment of a cross-system journey.
Planning from a static weekday schedule
Service changes by day and time, and disruptions can override the timetable. Check current trip-planning information and alerts immediately before travel.
Comparing train time instead of door-to-door time
Include station access, transfer waits, platform walking, and the final connection. These details often decide the practical winner.
Which option fits your priority?
| Your priority | What to favor | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Arriving beside a Midtown address near Penn Station | A direct NJ TRANSIT rail itinerary | Whether your line is direct or requires a change, plus the final walk from Penn Station |
| Reaching Lower Manhattan | PATH to World Trade Center when your origin and service pattern fit | Walk from the PATH station, live service, and any local connection |
| Reaching Herald Square or the 33rd Street area | PATH to 33rd Street or NJ TRANSIT to Penn Station, whichever leaves the shorter door-to-door trip | The exact Manhattan address and station exits |
| Minimizing transfers | The direct itinerary from your actual origin | Whether “direct” still requires a local ride before the station or after arrival |
| Minimizing total fare | The itinerary with the lower applicable full fare | Separate PATH pricing when combined with NJ TRANSIT and the current fare date |
| Traveling during a disruption | The system with a currently operating route and manageable backup | Live alerts, altered timetables, elevator status, and extra time |
A practical rule for the final choice
Start with the system whose Manhattan station is closest to your final destination, then test whether your New Jersey origin reaches that station directly and at a workable time. If both options remain plausible, compare the full fare, transfer burden, station accessibility, and live service status. NJ TRANSIT is the natural first check for a direct Penn Station trip; PATH is the natural first check from Newark, Harrison, Jersey City, or Hoboken to the World Trade Center or 33rd Street. The best route is the one that performs well from your door to your destination on the day you travel.
