Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is available only with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Standard Individual and Family memberships do not include the GBA app. With an active Expansion Pack subscription, supported games can be played alone, with nearby consoles over local wireless, or online with other subscribers. Your local classic-game saves remain on the console after expiration, while cloud-backup access ends until you renew.
Which Nintendo Switch Online plan includes GBA games?
Nintendo’s membership matrix lists Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics as an Expansion Pack benefit. Both the Individual and Family versions of Expansion Pack include the GBA library. The standard Individual and standard Family memberships do not.

The membership provides access rather than ownership of individual games. Nintendo describes the classic libraries as benefits available while the relevant membership is active; they are not permanent purchases that remain playable after cancellation.

What is in the GBA library?
The app is a curated, changing collection rather than a fixed promise that every Game Boy Advance release will be present. Nintendo’s product material highlights The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Nintendo can add or revise the selection, so check the current in-app catalog when deciding whether the service contains the games you want.

The GBA Nintendo Classics software page was released on February 8, 2023. That date identifies the software page, not a guarantee that the catalog has remained unchanged since launch.
Can you play GBA games with friends?
Yes, when the particular game supports multiplayer. Nintendo’s GBA software listing gives the platform-level capabilities as one player on one system, two to four players through local wireless, and two to four players online. Those figures describe what the app platform can provide; an individual title may support only one or some of those modes.

Local wireless is the practical choice when everyone is in the same room. Online play connects players who are elsewhere, but every participating account must have the membership access required for the GBA library. A Family Expansion Pack can cover accounts in one Nintendo Account family group; it does not make the standard Family plan a GBA plan.

How to start a multiplayer session
- Confirm that the account opening the app has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Launch the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics application and open a game that advertises multiplayer.
- Choose the title’s multiplayer, link, or online option. Nintendo notes that the exact wording and menu location can vary by game and app version.
- For local wireless, have the other players join from nearby compatible consoles. For online play, use the game’s online-room or friend-connection flow.
- Check the title’s own instructions if a second player cannot join; the app’s general 2–4-player listing does not mean every game implements every mode.
Can you play the GBA app offline?
Yes. After downloading the software and games, you can launch supported titles without a continuous internet connection. Nintendo Australia’s FAQ says the console must still connect online to verify the membership every seven days. That check is separate from the moment-to-moment gameplay connection: you can play between checks, but a console that has gone beyond the verification window may require an internet connection before the app will open again.
- Connect the Switch to the internet at least once during each seven-day period.
- Use the same Nintendo Account that holds the active Expansion Pack membership.
- Start the app while online if you are leaving for a trip, so the verification has completed before you lose connectivity.
If the membership has expired, downloading the app or having previously downloaded a game does not bypass the entitlement check. Renew the required membership and let the console verify it online.
What happens to a GBA save when Nintendo Switch Online expires?
Nintendo distinguishes the save stored on the console from a Save Data Cloud backup. If your membership ends, the classic-game save data remains on that Switch. Nintendo Support states: “However, the save data for the games will remain on your console and will still be available to use if you renew your membership at a later time.” In practical terms, expiration does not erase your local progress; access to the app and the subscription benefit is what stops until you resubscribe.

Cloud access is different. Nintendo also states: “If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, you won’t be able to access your Save Data Cloud backups.” A backup that was uploaded before expiration is not available for download while the account lacks an active membership.

Nintendo’s current service FAQ says users can regain prior Save Data Cloud backups by resubscribing within 180 days of expiration. Treat that as a recovery window, not as permission to leave a subscription inactive indefinitely. If cloud recovery matters, renew within that period and confirm that the backup appears before changing consoles.
Can you transfer a GBA save to another Switch?
There is no universal cartridge-style transfer that simply copies every GBA save between consoles. For compatible Switch software, Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud system links the backup to your Nintendo Account. You can sign in on another Switch and download that backup, but the process depends on three conditions: the account must be able to access the backup, the relevant Nintendo Switch Online membership must be active for cloud use, and the software must support Save Data Cloud.

Cloud-based transfer procedure
- On the original Switch, open the software’s save-data settings and confirm that a current Save Data Cloud backup exists for the Nintendo Account you intend to use.
- Keep the original console online long enough for any recent progress to upload. A backup that was never uploaded cannot be downloaded later.
- On the second Switch, sign in with the same Nintendo Account. A different account, even in the same Family group, does not automatically see the first account’s private backup.
- Install the compatible software and the GBA Nintendo Classics application if needed.
- Open the Switch’s Save Data Cloud controls for that software and choose the download option. Confirm any overwrite warning before replacing a newer local save.
- Launch the game and verify the expected save slot. If the title or save type is not compatible with cloud backup, this route will not be available.
The Family membership changes who can receive membership access, not who owns a cloud backup. Each backup remains associated with its Nintendo Account, so moving to another console requires that account’s sign-in and permissions.

The useful question is how many Nintendo Accounts need GBA access and whether those accounts already belong to one Nintendo Account family group. Individual Expansion Pack is designed for one account. Family Expansion Pack extends the benefit to everyone in the group, up to eight accounts.

- Choose Family when two or more members of the same family group will use the GBA app or other Expansion Pack benefits.
- Check account structure first: people outside the family group are not covered merely because they play on the same physical Switch.
- Consider usage, not ownership: neither tier grants permanent ownership of the classic games, so the value depends on continued access during the paid membership period.
For a single player, the Family tier adds no account coverage. For a family group that would otherwise need several Individual memberships, the ability to cover up to eight accounts is the deciding advantage; the exact financial break-even depends on the price and region shown by Nintendo when you subscribe.
Common problems and fixes
The GBA app says a membership is required
Check that the signed-in account has Expansion Pack, not standard Individual or standard Family. If the account is covered by a Family membership, verify that it is still in the family group and that the group membership has not expired. Connect online so the Switch can refresh its seven-day entitlement verification.
A friend cannot join an online game
First confirm that the title itself supports online play; the app’s 2–4-player platform listing is not a guarantee for every release. Then verify that each player has the required Expansion Pack access, is using a compatible game version, and has an internet connection. Reopen the game’s own multiplayer menu because labels differ between titles.
My save disappeared after expiration
Expiration should not delete the local classic-game save. Renew the relevant membership, connect the original console online, and reopen the app with the same Nintendo Account. If you are looking for a cloud copy on another Switch, remember that cloud backups are inaccessible while expired and that Nintendo’s stated recovery period after expiration is 180 days.
The second Switch has no save to download
Confirm that the backup was uploaded on the original console, that both consoles use the same Nintendo Account, and that the software supports Save Data Cloud. A save that exists only locally on the first Switch cannot be reconstructed from the cloud. Also check whether a newer local save would be overwritten before accepting a download.
