Add storage, a Pro Controller, a stand, or spare charging gear only when you have a specific need. Standard Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and Switch 2 accessories are not automatically interchangeable.
Start by identifying your Switch model
Check the console before shopping: standard Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model can connect to a TV; Nintendo Switch Lite cannot. Physical fit and storage standards also vary, so a product listing should explicitly name your model.

Buy protection first if you carry the console
Choose a case for the whole setup
A carrying case is the most practical first purchase for a console that travels. Confirm the case fits the exact model and any grips, controller attachments, or other items you plan to leave on the system. A snug case for the bare console may not accommodate a bulky grip.

Match the screen protector to the model
Nintendo says screen protectors are not one-size-fits-all. The screen sizes differ—6.2 inches for standard Switch, 7.0 inches for OLED, and 5.5 inches for Lite—so select a protector explicitly labeled for your console. Nintendo’s official case-and-protector bundle lists protectors for standard Switch and OLED; that listing is not evidence that it includes a Lite protector. Check the packaging or product listing for Lite support.
Nintendo says only officially licensed products have been evaluated by Nintendo for compatibility and quality. For third-party accessories, look for the licensed-product seal and verify the supported systems on the packaging or listing. Licensing is not a substitute for checking that a case or protector physically fits your exact model.

Add storage only when you need it
If you are running short of space, an appropriate microSD card can expand storage on standard Switch, OLED, or Lite. Nintendo’s FAQ says microSDXC expansion is supported up to 2TB. Buying a card is optional; it is not a prerequisite for using the console.
Do not carry that recommendation over to Switch 2: Nintendo requires microSD Express for game storage. A conventional Switch microSD card does not serve as Switch 2 game storage; Nintendo says it can be used there only to view captured screenshots and videos. Check Nintendo’s compatibility page before reusing a card.

Consider a Pro Controller for a different grip or another player
A Pro Controller is an optional upgrade if you prefer a traditional controller shape or want an additional controller for multiplayer. Nintendo lists it as compatible with standard Switch, OLED, and Lite. On Lite it connects wirelessly for supported games, but it does not give Lite TV output. Nintendo’s accessory compatibility information can help confirm compatibility for a specific item.
Lite owners: add a stand only for tabletop play
Switch Lite has no built-in stand. If you want tabletop sessions, Nintendo identifies its Adjustable Charging Stand or a licensed stand as options. A wireless Joy-Con pair or Pro Controller can then provide separate controls in games that support tabletop play. If you use Lite only as a handheld, a stand is unnecessary.

Check the box before buying spare gear
Nintendo lists the original Switch system package as including a dock, two Joy-Con controllers, wrist straps, a Joy-Con grip, an AC adapter, and an HDMI cable. Check the contents for your particular purchase before paying for duplicates. A replacement or second set of accessories makes sense when something is lost or damaged, or when you need gear at another TV location. A dock is not a TV-output solution for Lite, which does not support TV mode.

Accessory compatibility across generations is item-specific. Nintendo says many Switch accessories work with Switch 2, but that does not establish that every older accessory will work; verify the individual product before buying or reusing it.
