Choose GPS + Cellular if you want calls, messages and data when you are away from both your iPhone and Wi-Fi—and are prepared to activate an eligible carrier plan. The cellular hardware alone does not include active service.
What is different between GPS and GPS + Cellular?
Both configurations can connect to a nearby iPhone over Bluetooth. If Bluetooth is unavailable, Apple Watch can try compatible Wi-Fi. A GPS + Cellular model adds the option of connecting to a mobile network when neither the iPhone nor Wi-Fi is available, once a cellular plan has been set up. See Apple’s explanation of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular connections.

With an active plan, a cellular model can make calls and send texts without the iPhone nearby. The main difference is independence from the phone and Wi-Fi—not a wholly different watch experience for someone who normally keeps an iPhone close. Apple describes the capability on its Apple Watch carrier information page.
Which model fits your routine?
| Choose | When it makes sense | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| GPS | Your iPhone is usually with you, or you can use compatible Wi-Fi when it is not. | You will not have mobile-network access from the watch when away from both your iPhone and Wi-Fi. |
| GPS + Cellular | You often leave your iPhone behind—for example, while exercising, running errands or working—and want mobile calls, messages or data. | You need an eligible carrier and account, must activate service, and should account for the carrier’s recurring plan cost. Prices vary; no current plan amount is established here. |
| GPS + Cellular for a family member without their own iPhone | You want to set up and manage a watch for a child or another family member using Apple Watch For Your Kids. | Mobile connectivity requires a cellular plan, and availability, carrier support and features vary by location and setup. |
For ordinary phone-nearby use, GPS is the straightforward choice. Cellular is most useful when being reachable or connected during phone-free time matters enough to justify checking eligibility and paying for service.

Check carrier and account support before buying cellular
A GPS + Cellular watch does not automatically come with an active plan. Apple requires an eligible plan from a supported carrier. For a standard setup, the iPhone and watch generally need to use the same carrier. Apple Watch For Your Kids may allow a different provider in some circumstances. Prepaid, older and corporate accounts can have additional eligibility limits, so confirm your exact account with the carrier before choosing the watch. Apple’s carrier information outlines the service requirement.
Cellular Apple Watch models are optimized for the country where they are purchased; Apple does not offer one cellular model that supports service worldwide. Check that the specific model works with a carrier in the country where you intend to use it. Carrier and model support can vary by region. See Apple’s carrier and compatibility information.

When setting up a watch for a child or family member
Apple Watch For Your Kids lets an iPhone owner set up and manage a watch for a family member who does not have their own iPhone. For mobile-network connectivity, the watch needs a cellular plan. The feature’s availability and carrier support vary, and some features depend on a companion iPhone or are unavailable in this setup. Check Apple’s Apple Watch For Your Kids guidance for current requirements and limitations in your location.

The cited Apple pages do not provide a directly comparable GPS-versus-cellular battery test or figure. Battery life therefore should not be used as a quantified deciding factor on the basis of those sources.
