Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Zelda is the main reason you’re buying a console, choose Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo lists Zelda games for the system, including Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. A PS5 makes more sense if Zelda is optional and you care more about PlayStation games or your existing PS4 library. The original Nintendo Switch is still relevant for its games, but Switch 2 is the current Nintendo system to compare with PS5.
Can you play Zelda on PS5?
Nintendo’s official listings identify Zelda releases for Switch 2. The cited PlayStation PS5 catalog and compatibility information do not establish access to current Zelda releases, so if playing Zelda is a must, Nintendo is the straightforward choice. Nintendo’s Switch 2 information and its Zelda game listings are the relevant starting points.

Which Zelda games and editions should you consider?
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
Nintendo lists Switch 2 editions of both games. The editions are not interchangeable with the original Switch versions: Nintendo says that inserting the Switch version of Breath of the Wild into a Switch console plays the Switch version, without features exclusive to the Switch 2 edition. Check the edition and platform on the listing before buying, especially if you already own a copy. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Zelda listings provide the official details.

Ocarina of Time
Nintendo Australia announced Ocarina of Time for Switch 2 with a November 5, 2026 launch date. That date is in the future as of October 7, 2026, so it is an announced upcoming release, not a game that can yet be described as available. Check Nintendo’s Australia news page for a current status.

Will your current games work on the new console?
From Nintendo Switch to Switch 2
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Nintendo cautions that certain games may not be supported or fully compatible. Check the official Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information for a specific title before assuming it will behave as expected.
From PS4 to PS5
PlayStation says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, and select titles benefit from Game Boost. Its current official pages give conflicting counts for compatible PS4 games, so the qualitative compatibility statement is the safer guide. If you own PS4 discs, note that PS5 Digital Edition cannot use them; disc-based PS4 game upgrades also require a PS5 with a disc drive. See PlayStation’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance.

How to make the choice
- Start with your must-play list. If Zelda is on it, choose Switch 2. If you mainly want PlayStation games and Zelda is not essential, weigh PS5 against the games you expect to play.
- Check what you already own. Look up compatibility for individual Switch games. For PS4 games, check whether your copies are digital or disc-based and whether the PS5 model you are considering has a disc drive.
- Decide which Zelda edition you want. Verify whether a listing is the original Switch game or a Switch 2 edition, and compare the stated features before paying for another copy.
- Compare the total local cost. Check the console model, disc-drive configuration, games, and current regional bundles together. Prices and availability vary, and no current regional price comparison is established here.
