Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of built-in storage, but some of that space is reserved for the system. Downloaded games and updates can use System Memory or a compatible microSD Express card; save data stays in System Memory. If you are deciding whether to expand storage, the key question is how much downloadable software you expect to keep installed—not whether every game requires an expansion card.
How much storage does Nintendo Switch 2 have?
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use, so the full advertised capacity is not available for games. Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement gives the stated capacity; the Data Management FAQ clarifies that some space is reserved.

What can be stored on the console and on an expansion card?
Switch 2 separates installed software from save data. Downloaded games and their updates can be stored in System Memory or on a microSD Express card. Game saves remain in the console’s System Memory, regardless of whether you play from a game card or a download.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
- System Memory: downloaded software, save data, and other console data.
- microSD Express: downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video.
- Not on microSD Express: game save data. Nintendo says saves cannot be copied or saved to the card.
Deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. If you download the software again later, you can resume from the saved progress.
Which memory cards work with Switch 2?
For storing or loading Switch 2 games, the supported expansion format is microSD Express. An ordinary microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card that worked with the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or save data. Nintendo’s microSD compatibility guidance sets the limit at up to 2 TB for compliant microSD Express cards and says an internet system update is required the first time a card is used. Cards are sold separately.

- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
An old standard microSD card has a limited use: Nintendo says it can import screenshots and videos to Switch 2 System Memory, but it cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo’s microSD Express Card FAQ also says the inserted microSD Express card becomes the default location for downloadable software. Nintendo recommends using one card; software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.

Choosing an expansion card
Look for a card that explicitly meets the microSD Express standard and check its capacity, price, warranty terms, and stated compatibility. Do not buy a standard microSD card for Switch 2 game storage simply because it worked on an original Switch.

- Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Nintendo supports compliant cards up to 2 TB. As one product example, SanDisk’s 2026 microSD Express data sheet lists 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB capacities and read speeds up to 880 MB/s. That speed is a manufacturer maximum dependent on the host device and conditions, not an independent Switch 2 performance result.
Do game cards use storage?
Physical formats differ. A standard game card carries game data on the card, although a particular game may still have an additional download or space requirement. Check the game’s own packaging or official software page rather than assuming every physical release has identical storage needs.

Game-key cards require a download
A game-key card does not contain the full game; it carries the key needed to start the software. On first play, the console needs an internet connection and enough free space in System Memory or on a microSD Express card to download the game. Nintendo says the required space is printed on the game-key card packaging. The card must remain inserted each time you launch the game. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ for the game-key card requirements.

Check the exact physical edition
Nintendo says Switch 2 Edition physical releases include the Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack on the same game card. Some publishers may instead sell packaging with only a download code and no game card. Confirm the format and any required download for the exact edition you are buying.

Do you need a microSD Express card?
Nintendo currently says no individual game requires an expansion card to play. That does not mean every purchase can fit in the console’s remaining internal space: digital games and game-key card downloads need room, and updates or DLC may add to storage use. An expansion card is most useful if you plan to keep many downloaded games installed or want more room for captures. If your available System Memory is sufficient for your library, an additional card is optional.
