Choose a tablet for a Home Assistant dashboard that will stay visible as a household control panel; choose a phone when you mainly want personal control while moving around or away from home. The deciding factors are where the screen will live, whether it needs to behave like a kiosk, and whether its operating system supports the setup you want—not a universal screen-size or performance threshold.
Start with where and how you will use the dashboard
| Decision | A phone is a better fit when… | A tablet is a better fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | You carry it and open the dashboard when needed. | It will remain in a fixed, visible spot, such as a wall or kitchen. |
| Who uses it | The dashboard is mainly for your own control. | Household members need a shared, at-a-glance or touch control panel. |
| Kiosk behavior | You do not need the screen to stay on one dashboard. | You want it to open a chosen dashboard and remain available as a display. |
| Power and installation | Ordinary mobile charging meets your needs. | You can plan charging, cable routing, heat, mounting, orientation, and access to device controls. |
| Connectivity | You need to use the dashboard both at home and away. | It will usually stay on the home network; remote access is optional. |
For a permanent installation, try your actual dashboard on the candidate device before mounting it. Check the views and cards you rely on, including camera or custom cards if you use them. Home Assistant’s documentation describes kiosk workflows but does not establish a minimum screen size, processor, memory, battery life, or model ranking.

iPhone or iPad: Home Assistant’s built-in Kiosk mode
Home Assistant’s iOS Kiosk mode is designed for dedicated displays such as wall-mounted tablets, kitchen displays, and bedside panels. The documented requirements are iOS or iPadOS 2026.7.0 or later, the Home Assistant Companion App, and the Kiosk mode Labs feature. Hiding sidebar and top-bar controls also requires a frontend version that supports kiosk mode. See the iOS Kiosk mode documentation for current setup details.
The feature can select a server and dashboard, keep the screen awake, reload on a schedule, and show a screensaver. It changes behavior inside the Home Assistant app; it does not prevent someone from leaving that app. If you need to lock the device to one app, use Apple’s Guided Access separately.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
iPhone or iPad: Kiosker
Kiosker is a separate iOS kiosk-app option. Home Assistant’s integration requires Kiosker Pro or a valid subscription, and Kiosker version 26.4.1 or later for full integration functionality. The integration cannot control physical device features such as the screen or sleep behavior because of Apple restrictions. Check the Kiosker integration documentation before choosing this route.
Android: Companion App as the launcher
On Android, the Home Assistant Companion App can be set as the default home app. This makes the device behave more like a dedicated panel; see the Android Home App launcher documentation for the setup details.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Android: Fully Kiosk Browser
Fully Kiosk Browser is another Android option, but it is not required just to show a Home Assistant dashboard. Home Assistant’s integration requires Fully Remote Admin, which in turn requires the paid Fully Plus license. A free trial is available with a watermark. Review the Fully Kiosk Browser integration documentation if you need its remote-administration features.

Plan networking before deciding whether a device must work away from home
A phone or tablet needs a route to your Home Assistant instance. A panel that stays at home and a phone used away from home are different connectivity cases. The Companion App guide covers local-network addresses, remote access, dynamic DNS, and split DNS; consult its networking documentation to choose an arrangement that fits your setup.

Do not treat an unencrypted public connection as a safe default. Beginning with Companion App version 2025.11, users may be asked to choose a security level when their setup has an unencrypted HTTP URL. Home Assistant warns that choosing “Less secure” may expose credentials when connecting from a public network. See the connection security level documentation.
Check app and operating-system support on older devices
In a July 7, 2026 announcement, Home Assistant said Companion App 2026.8.0 would end support for iOS 15, watchOS 8, and macOS 11; 2026.7.1 was the final supported version for those platforms. The announcement says iOS Companion App support would require iOS 16.4 or later after the change, and that the Home Assistant frontend would remain accessible in a device browser. This is a dated support statement, not a guarantee that a particular older device will render your dashboard well. Check the Apple platform support announcement and verify current compatibility before repurposing hardware.

Account for the controls a kiosk layout hides
A simplified display can also remove controls people expect. In Home Assistant kiosk mode, the top-right Assist icon is inaccessible. If household members need Assist from that dashboard, add a dashboard button that starts it; Home Assistant documents this in Starting Assist from your dashboard.
Make the final choice
- Pick a phone if portability and personal, on-demand control are the main goals.
- Pick a tablet if you want a fixed display shared by household members.
- Choose the kiosk method only after confirming the device’s OS, app, frontend, and any paid-license requirements.
- For a fixed installation, check mounting, orientation, charging access, cable routing, heat, and access to controls before committing.
- Test the real dashboard on the device, and decide whether it must work only at home or remotely as well.
The documentation supports these use-case distinctions, but does not establish a universally best device or a hardware performance cutoff. Compare specific models only after confirming their current software support and how your own dashboard behaves on them.
