For a small Linux server fleet, choose an endpoint detection tool only after confirming support for every server’s exact distribution, release, and architecture. Wazuh is a self-managed, open-source platform with broad agent functions; Microsoft Defender for Endpoint documents behavioral detection, investigation, and response capabilities for Linux. Microsoft’s compatibility list also provides other commercial products to evaluate, but the available documentation does not establish which tool detects threats best or costs least.
What to compare before choosing
A product’s general Linux support claim is not enough to plan a rollout. Start with the systems you actually operate, then compare documented capabilities and operating requirements rather than relying on a feature label such as EDR or XDR.

- Compatibility: Verify the exact distribution, release, architecture, kernel constraints, and agent version in the vendor’s current prerequisites.
- Protection and detection: Check which prevention, behavioral detection, malware, and vulnerability functions apply on Linux.
- Investigation and response: Confirm what telemetry administrators can search and what response actions are available.
- Management and integration: Assess whether the tool fits your existing security stack and how agents report to a central service.
- Rollout and updates: Check supported onboarding methods and how you will automate installation and maintenance across servers.
- Operating model and workload: Decide whether you can operate a self-managed platform or need a vendor-hosted service. Measure resource use under your own workload; vendor estimates are not independent benchmarks.
- Total cost: Compare current licensing, server entitlements, endpoint counts, support, and the labor needed to operate the system.
These are decision criteria, not a scorecard: published vendor documentation does not provide an apples-to-apples comparison across all of them.
Wazuh: a self-managed platform with broad agent functions
Wazuh describes its platform as free and open source under GPLv2 and Apache License 2.0. Its self-managed deployment uses agents on monitored endpoints with a central server, indexer, and dashboard; Wazuh also offers Wazuh Cloud as a SaaS alternative. Agent data travels to the server through an encrypted and authenticated channel. Wazuh’s installation guide explains the components and deployment options.

What the agent does
Wazuh’s agent documentation lists log collection, file integrity monitoring, security configuration assessment, system inventory, malware detection, active response, container security, and cloud security. Wazuh reports that the agent uses an average of 35 MB of RAM. That is the vendor’s documented estimate, not a result from an independent test; validate resource use on representative servers before broad deployment.
What operating it involves
In Wazuh’s architecture, the server processes agent data with decoders and rules. Wazuh says it can analyze data from hundreds or thousands of agents and can scale horizontally in a cluster; these are vendor architectural statements, not independent performance measurements. The platform gives administrators control over deployment, but that also means planning for the central components and their ongoing operation. Wazuh suggests tools such as Puppet, Chef, SCCM, or Ansible to automate larger agent deployments.

Onboarding routes
Microsoft documents script-based onboarding, deployment through Defender for Cloud, configuration-management tools, golden images, and manual deployment. Its server onboarding guidance also lists SaltStack and recommends running a detection test after onboarding. Review the current prerequisites for each Linux distribution and architecture before choosing a rollout method.
- Check that each server’s distribution, release, architecture, and other prerequisites are supported by the current Microsoft documentation.
- Choose an onboarding route that fits your fleet: scripts, Defender for Cloud, a supported configuration-management tool, a golden image, or manual deployment.
- Onboard a representative server first, then follow Microsoft’s guidance to run a detection test and confirm that the device appears as expected.
- Automate deployment and updates for the remaining servers using the route you validated.

Other commercial tools to put on a Linux shortlist
Microsoft’s supported EDR solutions list for Defender for Cloud names CrowdStrike Falcon, Trellix, Symantec, Sophos, SentinelOne Singularity, and Cortex XDR alongside Defender for Endpoint as Linux-compatible options. The page is a compatibility-list source, not a feature comparison or endorsement. It specifies that Cortex XDR Linux support is available only when installed using a package manager.

How to make a shortlist that fits a small fleet
- Inventory the fleet. Record each server’s distribution, version, architecture, kernel, role, and installation constraints.
- Eliminate compatibility mismatches. Check those details against each candidate’s current Linux support matrix and document any exceptions.
- Map required workflows. Decide which alert types, investigation views, and response actions your team needs, then confirm that they are available for Linux—not just in the product generally.
- Choose the operating model. Account for the components and administration of a self-managed platform, or assess the hosted and existing security-stack options that apply to your organization.
- Pilot and measure. On representative servers, validate onboarding, alert visibility, response procedures, update automation, and resource use under your own workload.
- Compare total terms. Obtain current prices and confirm server licensing, plan entitlements, endpoint minimums, and support requirements before comparing costs.
This process narrows the field without treating vendor capability descriptions as proof of equal protection. No independent comparative detection test or comparable pricing evidence is established here.
