Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShort answer: Nintendo Switch 2 is a compelling upgrade if you want a larger, sharper handheld screen, more capable TV play, newer Switch 2 games and access to much of the original Switch library. The trade-offs are a short and highly variable battery estimate, limited built-in storage, a new memory-card requirement and a higher current US price. Whether it is worth buying depends most on how you play and which games you want.
What Switch 2 improves
Nintendo released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. Its hybrid design still lets you play on the console or connect it to a TV, but the display and supported output are upgraded. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch screen with 1080p handheld output. Docked output can reach 4K at up to 60 frames per second, while compatible games and displays can support HDR, VRR and up to 120 fps. These are maximum capabilities, not a promise that every game runs at those settings. TV-mode VRR was added in a system update released September 10, 2026. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 features page for the qualifications.

The included Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and offer mouse functionality in compatible games. Nintendo also lists GameChat with screen sharing, accessed using the C Button. Online features including GameChat require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership; terms and availability can vary. Video chat additionally requires a Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or compatible USB-C camera, sold separately. The launch-era open-access offer ended March 31, 2026, so GameChat should not be assumed to be free.
Is the current price worth it?
For US buyers, Nintendo Life’s regional price guide, updated September 2, 2026, reports a console price of $499.99 after an increase effective September 1, 2026. The same guide reports £419.99 in the UK and €499.99 in France, Germany and Spain. These are guide figures, not a guarantee of a retailer’s live price; check local listings before buying. #1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
At that US price, the clearest reason to pay more is wanting Switch 2 games and its display and TV capabilities in a portable system. If your current Switch already meets your needs and you are not drawn to the newer software, upgrading is less compelling. The available figures do not establish a current, like-for-like performance comparison between models, so value is best judged by the games and play modes you will actually use.
How long does the battery last?
Nintendo Australia estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours per charge, depending on the game and usage conditions, and approximately three hours to recharge while the console is asleep. Those are manufacturer estimates, not a guaranteed runtime for a particular game. The battery is internal and non-removable; Nintendo says replacement is available for a fee through Customer Support. The wide runtime range makes frequent access to charging more important for long handheld sessions. Specifications are on Nintendo Australia’s technical specifications page.

Can you play original Switch games?
Switch 2 plays Switch 2 game cards and existing Switch game cards, but Nintendo warns that some original Switch titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a specific title rather than assuming every game works exactly as it did on the original console. Nintendo’s launch announcement describes the backward-compatibility approach and exceptions: Nintendo’s April 2, 2025 announcement. The feature page also carries the compatibility caveat.

Nintendo identified Mario Kart World as a Switch 2 exclusive released alongside the system. TechRadar described the launch lineup as relatively slight in its June 2025 review, while praising its own backward-compatibility experience. That opinion reflects the launch period; it should not be treated as a judgment of the library as it stands in 2026.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Storage: 256 GB, with a new card requirement
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. For additional Switch 2 game storage, Nintendo Australia specifies microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB, and says an internet-connected system update is required to use them. Older microSD cards do not expand Switch 2 game storage, though they can be used to copy screenshots and video from the original Switch. Check the card type before purchasing; an ordinary microSD card is not a substitute. The requirements are detailed on Nintendo Australia’s specifications page.
Who should buy it—and who can wait?
- Buy if: you want Nintendo’s newer Switch 2 software, a larger 1080p handheld screen, higher supported TV output, or a single system for portable and TV play.
- Upgrade if: you own an original Switch, have confirmed that your key games are compatible, and value the new hardware enough to justify the current local price.
- Wait if: your existing Switch covers your needs, you are content with its games, or you mainly play away from an outlet and the estimated 2–6.5-hour battery range is a concern.
- Plan for storage: account for the internal capacity and, if you need more game space, the cost and availability of a compatible microSD Express card.
TechRadar’s reviewer liked the design and reported a positive backward-compatibility experience, but criticized battery life. Those are useful attributed impressions from June 2025, not independent testing for this article. The hardware’s strongest case is the combination of hybrid play and newer software; its weakest fit is for buyers who prioritize long unplugged sessions or see little reason to replace a working original Switch.
